Another Cordray Vies for Quiz-show GloryBy Joe Blundo, The Columbus Dispatch

(This article originally appeared on May 9 and is reprinted with permission by Joe Blundo and The Columbus Dispatch)

Think twice before challenging the Cordray family to a trivia contest.

On Wednesday night, Danny Cordray and his teammates at Central Crossing High School will appear on the WOSU-TV broadcast of the championship round of In the Know, a long-running quiz show.

Cordray is the son of Richard Cordray, who 40 years ago was on the championship In the Know team at Grove City High School.

Yes, that Richard Cordray, director of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, former Ohio treasurer and, most relevantly for the topic at hand, five-time champion on Jeopardy!

In fact, Cordrays have been demonstrating their game-playing prowess for three generations: Frank, father of Richard and grandfather of Danny, had the distinction of being the only bridge player to win tournaments in eight different decades.

Danny, a senior at Central Crossing, competes on In the Know with teammates Haarith Ahmed, Nazar Momot and Serina Smith. They will vie for glory and four $2,000 scholarships awarded to the winners by Ohio State University.

Danny said his father’s advice on topics to study for the contest was invaluable.

“I was willing to spend the time, but to have somebody tell me how to spend the time was really helpful.”

Richard has a cassette tape from the 1977 finals, when he helped his team win a close contest against Delaware Hayes by answering questions about composer Jacques Offenbach and the spoils system under Andrew Jackson.

The finals this year, pitting Central Crossing against Olentangy High School, took place several days ago for taped broadcast, and I will not reveal the outcome. But the competition was tense.

“Incredibly nerve-wracking,” said Richard, who attended with his wife, Peggy. “You know how it is in the stands when a parent is watching a child play.”

Of course, Richard, who spends his workweek in Washington and commutes home to Grove City on weekends, is no stranger to high-pressure television: He won $45,303 on Jeopardy! in 1987 and has been grilled in televised congressional hearings about the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to which he was appointed by President Barack Obama.

Father and son have another parallel: Richard was co-valedictorian of his 1977 graduating class, and Danny is valedictorian of his. Danny will graduate on June 3 with his twin sister, Holly, and plans to attend Duke University.

The Cordrays, not surprisingly, enjoy games even when they’re not on television. They like playing, among others, Scrabble, Password and a trivia game called Bezzerwizzer.

I asked whether they engage in cutthroat tactics.

“Nothing crazy,” Danny said, “but we all like to win.”

(Editor’s Note: Central Crossing was crowned Champion of the 2016/17 Season of In the Know when the final episode aired on WOSU TV the day this article appeared.)

89.7 FM NPR News can also be heard on our regional network stations on HD Radio as well as streaming online at wosu.org and on WOSU’s mobile app.

Invisibilia’s co-hosts Alix Spiegel, Lulu Miller and Hanna Rosin have roots at This American Life, Radiolab and The Atlantic. Each week they will weave incredible human stories with fascinating new psychological and brain science, in the hopes that listeners will come to see new possibilities for how to think, behave and live.

NPR’s award-winning and innovative Science Desk plays a key role in Invisibilia. “Each program is scientifically rigorous, jumping right to the heart of the latest psychological and brain research,” said Anne Gudenkauf, NPR’s Senior Supervising Science Editor and former WOSU producer. “Alix, Lulu and Hanna show us how what scientists know sheds light on what we experience. Invisibilia anchors its examinations with intimate accounts from real people living at the boundaries of our understanding of that new science.”

Season Three will try to answer questions including: How real and inevitable are our emotions? How real is our own reality? And how does implicit bias shape our thoughts and actions?

Invisibilia is a glimpse into a world you cannot see. Listen. Feel different.

Invisibilia will air Sundays at 3pm during the month of June, and on-demand through the WOSU Public Media Mobile app.

Invisibilia Returns for Season Three on 89.7 NPR News

Travel w/ Rick Steves

Invisibilia is Latin for "the invisible things." Each Sunday afternoon in June, 89.7 NPR News and NPR’s Invisibilia will explore the invisible forces that shape human behavior.

The program will probe things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions – interweaving narrative storytelling with scientific research.

Summer Programming As we finally settle into summer, a couple of seasonal happenings drive some interesting programming on Classical 101. Suzanne Bona marks Father’s Day with musical father/son duos, including trumpeter Maurice André and his son, on

Sunday Baroque. The program also gives a nod to June as the traditional month for weddings and looks ahead to upcoming summer music festivals. Sunday mornings from 6am-10am

This month on The American Sound, Jennifer Hambrick features music to get you in the mood for some all-American fun. Over the course of June, you’ll hear music by Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Mark O’Connor and Amy Beach, including Beach’s charming piano work Fireflies. Tuesdays at 7pm/Saturdays at 6pm

June also marks the return of Music in Mid Ohio with host Christopher Purdy. The program will highlight recent performances in the Columbus area by local and touring musicians. The series kicks off on June 4, with selections from

concerts by the Columbus Children’s Choir, the Arianna String Quartet, and the OSU Concert Band. Throughout June, you’ll hear performances from Imani Winds (Chamber Music Columbus), Fra Angelico (Early Music in Columbus), the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra, Lancaster Chorale, and pianists Leon Bates and Orlay Alonso. Sundays at 1pm

Later this summer, Classical 101 will be holding an instrument drive to help get your unused musical instruments into the hands of aspiring young musicians.
