June 2018 Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Guardians, Here we are, already at the last month of another amazing school year. As I reflect on what this last nine months has brought to the LSL community, I am in awe of our successes and achieve- ments. I am so proud of the students, the staff, and the parents for the many ways they demon- strated creativity, ingenuity, resiliency and collaboration in building the LSL community this year! Please be reminded that we still have 2 weeks of High School classes, 3 weeks in Junior High, followed by final exams, before we can wrap up our year of learning. It is imperative that stu- dents commit to thorough review, completion of outstanding assignments, and quality preparation for final exams, so that they experience the greatest success on these year ending assessments. The exam schedule is included in this newsletter and is posted on our school website. Parents, please be sure to post it in an obvious place at home so that you can support your child in their exam preparations. There is also a segment within this newsletter that provides excellent guidance to exam prepara- tion, review resources and classes to access, as well as strategies for optimizing exam experi- ences…please check these out! Summer School registration is presently open, as are Diploma Preparation sessions to be held right here at LSL...both can be accessed at www.ae.ecsd.net and more information to be found within this edition of our newsletter also. Please take some time to locate any textbooks or school resources that your child may have ac- cumulated during the course of the school year and return them to the school Business Office. All textbooks should be returned as soon as final exams have been written. There are a number of exciting events coming up this month to celebrate the many achievements of this past year, including Grade 9 Farewell, Athletic Awards, Junior High Awards, Big Band Night and Art Show, Year-End Celebration, and Grade 12 Commencements and Graduation. As always, parents are welcome and encouraged to attend any of the events that include their chil- dren. I wish to give a very special thank you to the parents who served on this year’s School Council. Your continued support and faith in what we do for your children is so valuable to us. We are blessed to collaborate in such an authentic and trusting manner, in the service of all our students. As always at this time of year, there will be some changes in our staffing scenario for the upcom- ing year. I will provide a summary of all these changes in our year-end newsletter that comes out in late June. I do want to make special mention of a significant milestone, however…Mr. Cliff Sosnowski, high school physics teacher, will be retiring this June. Mr. Sosnowski has faithfully and enthusiastically served the students of LSL without interruption for 45 years!!! This is an exceptional educational commitment and milestone, and we as a school community want to ex- tend our thanks on behalf of the generations of students he has served! Congratulations, Mr. Sosnowski, and God bless you in this new chapter of your life! Please note the many events, schedules and activities listed in this newsletter that will occur in the month of June. Yours in quality Catholic education T. Wasylenko

The important thing is that each believer discern his or her own path, that they bring out the very best of themselves,

the most personal gifts that God has placed in their hearts.

~ Pope Francis, Rejoice and be Glad, paragraph 11~

The end of the school year is fast approaching, and this provides us with a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the

growth and learning that has taken place over the course of the year that has empowered our students to journey fur-

ther down the lifelong path of discovering their own giftedness as children of God. This is at the heart of Catholic edu-

cation in Edmonton Catholic Schools.

Edmonton Catholic Schools’ Student Senate has had a very productive year. You can learn more about this very im-portant body of student representatives at www.ecsd.net . As part of their work to champion Catholic education, they launched the Humans of ECSD project. Humans of ECSD explores the personal experience of students and staff at Ed-monton Catholic Schools. Our Student Senators interviewed and photographed people from their school communities and asked them to describe in their own voice the depth and richness Catholic education provides. This digital story-telling campaign takes its cues from the Humans of New York project. We are pleased to offer Diploma Exam Preparation Sessions at various locations throughout the city. Visit www.ecsd.net and click on the Diploma Preparation Banner to see the complete schedule of course offerings.

Our Budget for the 2018-19 school year is before the Board of Trustees on the afternoon of May 29th at their Public

Board Meeting. The approved budget will be posted on our website at

https://www.ecsd.net/AboutUs/annual_reports/Pages/District-Budget.aspx.

June 21 each year marks National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. Many of our schools will be hosting activities to

help all students grow in appreciation of the contributions of Indigenous peoples to Canada and to build an apprecia-

tion of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures.

Alberta Education will be sharing information about the draft K-4 provincial curriculum with stakeholders between the

period of May 31st and June 15th. The feedback gathered from the spring information sessions will be shared with the

teacher writing groups and inform their ongoing work. The organizational structure of the new curriculum involves es-

sential understandings, guiding questions, and learner outcomes. Conceptual and procedural knowledge, provincial

competencies, and literacy and numeracy progressions serve to support teachers in planning for student understanding

of the learner outcomes. One of the key goals of the K-4 curriculum is to lead students to deeper understandings that

transfer across different situations. Teachers will assess and report on the learning outcomes. The curriculum timeline

tool, which may be viewed at: https://education.alberta.ca/curriculumtimeline/ showcases past and future engage-

ments and activities and allows users to identify how various stakeholders are included. The implementation dates, as-

sessment plan, and accompanying resources are yet to be determined. We will keep parents apprised of new infor-

mation as it becomes available. . . . 2

Page 3

Alberta Education is also seeking the input of stakeholders with respect to the criteria that is currently being used to

determine which students are eligible for free busing to and from school in Alberta. This online survey is open until

June 15, and you can access it by clicking on the link https://t.co/f2oaxe4jN9. Your voice is extremely important. You

may answer as an individual or as a group.

Edmonton Transit is redesigning their Bus Network and is also seeking stakeholder input to ensure that the new strate-

gy meets your needs. You can go online and view the draft routes and guiding principles and complete an online sur-

vey until June 30 at https://t.co/WUhiokGAVt .

As we begin to look forward to all of the wonderful opportunities for recreation, exploration, and relationship that

summer brings to our family life, let us take a moment and pray for our fathers, grandfathers, brothers, and all of the

men who fill those roles in our lives.

God our Father,

We give you thanks and praise for fathers of all ages.

We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; May they find courage and perseverance to balance work,

family and faith in joy and sacrifice.

We pray for our fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; May they know that the God of compas-

sion walks with them in their sorrow.

We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice.

We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our

memory and nourish us with their love.

Bless them all as they serve you through their vocation to nurture your children.

Amen

Have a wonderful, blessed summer full of joy and peace!

Sincerely, Joan Carr Superintendent

Father’s Day – Loving and Caring for Our Neighbours

My father, John, turns 90 next month! He has aged like fine wine!

He joins a host of celebrities 90 years and older, including Tony Bennett, Kirk Douglas, Betty White, Bob Barker, Angela Lansbury, Doris Day, and Mel Brooks (but my dad is way funnier than Mel Brooks!).

He may not be a celebrity in the sense of being a movie star, but he is my hero – always has been; always will be.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, join me in expressing our love and gratitude for our fathers (mine included), as well as for our step-dads, adoptive dads, foster dads, grandfathers, godfathers, and the like.

Dad’s are our coaches, best friends, and protectors. They teach us – like my dad did for me – true values in life, real stuff that we can pass on to our own children: love, faith, honesty, self-confidence, integrity, and so on. And they teach us simple things like to ride a bike, build a birdhouse, and drive a car.

If I were to pick one thing that I admire most in my father’s 90 years, it would be is his love, respect, and compassion for neigh-bours. When he was younger, healthier, and stronger, he took it upon himself to care for our neighbours, especially the elderly and those in need. He would fix a broken window, repair a leaky faucet, cultivate a garden, help with the harvest, even milk the neighbour’s cows.

On more than one occasion, I’ve asked my self why did dad do the things he did? What motivated him? As I grow in age (and I’d like to think in wisdom!), I like to think that dad reached out to neighbours because he not only thought it was the right thing to do, but that in some small way he recognized Christ in them. You see, dad loved God and the Church. (More than once he even painted our small church of Saint John the Baptist, Lavoy, including the domes high above the earth – dad was a carpenter, which makes me the son of a carpenter, just like Jesus! Isn’t that sweet?).

In loving God and the Church, it wasn’t a far leap of faith for dad to recognize Christ in our neighbours.

This Father’s Day, let us honour our fathers by imitating them in their goodness. Let us strive to become like Jesus, doing the works of Christ, that is, the works of compassion, forgiveness, sacrificial love.

Perhaps a page from the life of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta would be helpful here in making real our outreach to one another. (My dad, and late mom, met Mother Teresa when she visited Saint Paul, Alberta, in 1982).

Saint Teresa writes: “Another time I was walking through the streets of London in a poor area where our sisters also work. I saw a man in a truly terrible condition sitting there looking so sad and alone. So I walked up to him and took him by the hand and asked him how he was. When I did this, he looked up at me and said, ‘Oh, after such a long time, someone is touching me.’ And then his eyes brightened, and he started to sit up straight. Such a tiny attention had brought Jesus into his life. He had been waiting so long for a show of human love, but it was actually a show of God’s love.

“These are beautiful examples of the hunger I see in these people, the poorest of the poor, the ignorant and unwanted, the un-loved, the rejected, and the forgotten. They are hungry for God.”

In some sense, I think that’s what motivated my dad in caring for our neighbours. He wanted to satisfy their hunger for God.

This Father’s Day, let us recommit ourselves to meet the hunger of God in each other, “not only a hunger in people suffering phys-ically, but also a great hunger in people suffering spiritually and emotionally – people suffering in their hearts and souls, especially our young people.” (From “A Call to Mercy”).

Happy Father’s Day! Happy 90th Birthday Dad!

• Exams will be written in the LSL gym and the start times are 9:00 AM or 1:00 PM.

• Students should gather in the cafeteria about 15 minutes before the start of their exam.

• Students are NOT to bring cell phones, ipods, MP3 players, or other electronic devices into the exam room.

• Students are also NOT allowed to have purses, gym bags, or large/heavy outer wear in the exam room.

• Diploma exams will be administered in the Ancillary Room and are on the extended writing schedule.

Junior High: Year end exams for all Junior High students, will be written in the mornings from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Students are expected to register in homerooms @ 8:25 AM for exam preparation time prior to the actual exam start time of 9:00 AM. Textbooks will be collected after the final exam on June 27th. It is important that all students arrive at school on time for exams so they can take advantage of the full time available to them and so they are not disruptive to the other students who are trying to write exams. Exams will be written in their homerooms. Extended time will be offered if needed, please speak to your Homeroom teacher for more information.

• Last day of JH classes is June 21st.

• After the last exam on June 27th, students will return all textbooks, so it is important that students have all their textbooks at school on that

date. Homeroom teachers will instruct students on the procedures for returning their textbooks.

• Students will NOT be allowed to share materials/supplies during exams.

• Students are to bring all materials they require, such as 2 sharpened HB pencils, erasers, and where allowed, calculators, dictionaries, and

notes.

• Students must be prepared to stay in the exam room from 9:00-11:00 AM. Students should bring a book to read with them into the exam

room, in case they finish their exam early. They will not be able to leave the exam room to get reading material once the exam has started.

• Students are asked not to bring food, cell phones, cards, CD players, IPODs, MP3, Gameboy, etc. into the exam room, and book bags, text-

books, purses and coats should be left in lockers. Water bottles will be allowed in exam rooms.

Study Hall After Exams: Study Hall will be available for JH students who are staying at school once exam writing is completed. Students do have the option of going home after they finish exams, if they have a signed Permission Form from their parent giving them permission to do so. Permission forms will be sent home on June 8th and must be returned to homeroom teachers no later than June 15th. Students who do not have their form signed will not be permitted to leave the school, and the office will not accommodate phone calls home for verbal permission.

Junior High Make Up Exams: The afternoons of June 22nd - 27th have been set aside for Junior High students to write make up exams. If a student was not able to write an exam at the scheduled time, they are to check with their subject area teacher, who will arrange for them to write the exam on one of these alter-nate days.

Senior High Final Marks High School final marks, with school course marks only, will be available on PowerSchool by June 29th. Hard copies will not be distributed, how-ever, they can be printed upon request by a parent to the school office. Diploma marks will be uploaded to myPass during the summer. Students who need help creating a myPass account should see Ms. Roberts in Student Services before the end of June.

At Home Prep: Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Exams

Leading up to the exam… 1. Be consistent with study time; a little each day will be much better than trying to cram everything into one long session. In addition, consider

developing a glossary or collection of note-cards for vocabulary review in each class. Many students find that preparing for an individual class for 60-90 minutes per day, five or six days per week, will leave them well-prepared at exam time. All-nighters simply don't work for most peo-ple, and students experience declining returns on their efforts when they attempt to study for four and five hours straight.

2. Do not multi-task while studying. Set aside time to study in advance and then follow through. For most people, that means leaving your room and turning off visual/auditory distractions, including iPods, Facebook, and music with lyrics.

3. Complete a mock test. Why not set aside a review assessment and time yourself. Try to answer these questions on paper without using your notes? If you complete a mock test, 3-4 days before an exam, you’ll then know where to focus your studying. You may also combat pre-test jitters by demonstrating to yourself what you know. For the humanities, try answering a couple of potential essay questions on a timed, closed book basis and see how you do. Another simple way to conduct a mock test is to ask a friend or classmate to give you an oral quiz based on concepts in the textbook or in either of your notes.

4. If you have outstanding questions, go see your teacher, tutor or parent at least three days before the exam. If you’ve given yourself a mock test in advance, you’ll be able to go to the school with an agenda.

5. Think about what written questions might be on the exam; outline each potential essay as a form of pretesting and practice. 6. Consider studying with a group of dedicated students. A group study session is an ideal time to review and compare notes, ask each other

questions, explain ideas to one another, discuss the upcoming exam and difficult concepts, and, when appropriate, delegate study tasks. Be sure to set an agenda and a specific time frame for your group study session, so that your work stays on track.

… the above tips have been selected from http://www.stlawu.edu/academic-support/how-should-i-prepare-tests-and-final-exams

Test Taking Tips...

Before the Test Tips 1. Get a good night’s sleep and eat a high protein breakfast. Drink plenty of water. 2. Practice guided imagery, visualizations of succeeding on the test, mentally “going where the information is stored in your brain”, or breathing

techniques. 3. Don’t study right before the test. Concentrate on being calm and mentally accessing the information you have already studied. 4. Get to the test a little early. 5. Don’t engage in negative talk with other students before the test, such as “I’m so nervous – I don’t know if I studied enough.” 6. Eliminate negative thoughts or self-talk by replacing them with a positive affirmation, like “I am prepared for the test and I will do well” or “I am

smart – I can do this.” 7. Ask your teacher if you can use a blank piece of paper during the test (be sure to ask or it may look like you are cheating). Use the paper for

“brain dumping” or “mind mapping” during the exam. 8. Make a decision to ignore students who finish the test before you. Research shows that students who leave early usually don’t score as well

as those who take more time. 9. Sit as close as possible to the area where you learned the information in class.

Multiple Choice Test Tips 1. Read the directions carefully. 2. Read the sentence stem, think of the answer, and then find it in the choices. 3. Pay careful attention to negative words (underline them) in the stem and these are distractors. 4. Read all the options, before choosing. 5. Don’t dwell on the ones you don’t know. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “the answer will come,” mark the question, and then move on to

questions you know. Go back to the one(s) you marked and try again – the answer has probably come to you. 6. Go back to the questions you were unsure of. If the answer hasn’t come to you, use one of the strategies below to help you answer the ques-

tion.

During the Test Strategies 1. Look for the one that is grammatically correct. 2. Look for similar words in the question and answer. 3. Look for the longest and most specific answer. 4. Try the “True or False” technique. 5. Stick to the subject matter of the course. 6. Watch out for negatives and extreme wording. 7. Numbers in the middle range are usually correct. 8. If two options are opposite, the answer is probably one of them. 9. Research shows the most commonplace answer is “C” followed by “B”. 10.“None of the above” is seldom correct. 11. “All of the above” is often correct if the answers are very specific.

Please ask your child to check the Lost & Found box to be sure none of their personal belongings have been left there. Also, there are various pieces of jewellery, house keys, glasses, etc. at the school office. If your child has misplaced any of these items, have them check in the office so their lost treasures can be returned safely to them. Items left in the Lost & Found after June 28th will be donated to our local Goodwill store.

Message from the Library Quote of the Month: Books Don’t Need Batteries……..In a world besotted with electronic devices, books don’t need batteries. Believe in the power of imagination and the importance of reading. …….anonymous

The library will be closing for the borrowing of books on Monday, June, 11th. All books borrowed prior to this date and on this date, must be returned to the library by Friday, June 15th. Library books that have been borrowed and not returned by this date, a replacement fee will be administered.

For study purposes, the library will remain open to students until the completion of all exams. A reminder to students, like any library, entry to must be in a quiet and respectful manner. While in the library, the space is to be shared with many other students who may be reading, writing an exam or working on an assignment. Let’s be respectful of each other and work quietly and independently as possible.

Wishing all LSL students and their families a wonderful, safe and pleasant summer break. Looking forward to reacquainting with

our many LSL readers and meeting and working with new ones.

Leadership April and May were a busy months for Leadership! This year, to celebrate Easter, Leadership organized various activities. During the week’s events, we had a mini egg contest, in which students had to guess the number of mini eggs. The lucky winner came from our grade 7 group. The junior high students also participated in an egg hunt. Students that were lucky enough to find one claimed a prize at lunch, in which they got an Easter treat. During May, leadership organized more events, including a Talent Show, Star Wars Day and promoted Hats on for Mental Health. The talent show was a great success, showcasing some of the wonderful talent LSL students had to offer. These talents included playing various instruments, singing, dancing, and a band. On May 2nd students were encouraged to wear a hat to show their support for Mental Health. Students were also educated on the significance of this day, thanks to Mr. Robson. Last, students participated in Star Wars trivia on “May the Fourth be With You” with the opportunity to win Star Wars themed prizes. Looking forward, the Leadership will have their year end dance on June 21st. Listen to announcements and keep your eyes on the leadership board for more information.
