Presidents Report
Hello club members and welcome to this edition of the club newsletter.
We're fast coming up to the end of the cross country running season with the clubperforming well again this year although not currently at the top in the winter club ofthe year awards. Feels like the season has only just begun!!
Well done to all our athletes at high school and primary school who have justcompleted their various national and zone level races. Some great performancesfrom you all.

The Canterbury Club Cross Champs is coming up very soon and we're the duty clubfor this event so need some volunteers to assist with the course setup. Please get intouch with me if you're available for this.
The Crater Rim Ultra planning and work is going well with Jamie and the teamputting together what is sure to be another great event this year. The photo belowwas taken by Jamie while he was out running the entire 52K course to confirm thetracks and distance!
The clubs AGM is coming up soon too. August the 15th to be precise at the clubrooms. A notice will be sent out separately to this newsletter with the AGMannouncement and also available from the club rooms as a printed copy.
We have some vacancies on the committee, specifically the Senior Club Captain forCross Country, Road and Trail Running plus Tui will be stepping down as clubsecretary this year to focus on her studies. She's done a great job in this role but it'stime for someone else to step up to fill in here.
See you out there!!
Cheers,

Club Trip - Hammer Springs
Sun, fun and run. What a fabulous time we all had on the club's day trip to HanmerSprings on June 16.
After a wet and grey week in Christchurch, it was so good for about 20 of us to climbon a bus and enjoy a midwinter escape to Hanmer, with its many attractions andclear skies.
En route, we had a chance to learn a bit more about one other. Who knew thatRobyn played soccer in a previous life? Or that Julie had never been to Hanmerbefore?
How inspiring was it to hear how running with the Achilles group has been such apositive experience for Nicola?
Once in Hanmer, we met Phil who was staying there for the weekend with Anita andwent our various ways. Some went for a stroll, others went shopping and Jamie wentfor a long run around Jacks-Jollies. The rest of us headed on a 90-minute jog upConical Hill and over the forestry trails on the half marathon course.
Of course, no visit to Hanmer is complete without a visit to the hot pools, which wasso nice that the idea of the club buying a spa pool went down well!
Refreshed after our swim and exercise, and well fed and watered at Hanmer's manycafes, we were driven home in time to watch the All Blacks wallop France.
Many thanks to Jamie for organising a great day, and to the club for subsidising it.

Race Report - My first 100K UltraUTA - Ultra Trail Australia May 2018
The Blue Mountains (Katoomba) Australia
Well I couldn't have said it any better than the words spoken from mum as I crossedthe finished line during the early hours of Sunday morning and that was "youknocked the bastard off".
Three years in the making and now a member of the 100 km club. A beautifully brutalcourse covering 4400 meters of ascent. Australia's most prestigious and challengingtrail running event held in the Blue Mountains.
Nothing really prepares you for the people you meet, the breathtaking scenery andthe tears of joy falling down your mum's face as you cross the finish line having onlyjust enough energy to accept my belt buckle.
My training has been so specific that I found myself smiling so much as I could relateparts of the course to landmarks I had trained on... Worsley's (pre fires), Bridle PathPipeline, Baldwin Street in Dunedin, Mt Oxford.. needless to say I felt strong andconfident as one foot went in front of the other.
They say the first 50km is based on fitness and physical strength and the last 50 kmis purely a mental battle and you could see that from the worn down bodies and thewords that were not spoken.
50 km and 7 hours 34 in and I am feeling good and on track for my starting racegroup finishing times of 16.5 - 17.5 hours.
The terrain, the climbs, the steps, the descents took its toll at the 60 km mark wheremy right leg gave out on me. It was here that my ITB band felt like someone hadtaken a blunt knife and was jabbing it in out out of the side of my knee.
It was here that I took a reality check and asked myself... can I continue? This wasn'thow I planned the last 40 kms but the mind just kicked in and the body just had tofollow.
The knee slowed me down but the spirits never faded. My watch ran flat so now Ihad no idea of what time it was nor did I care. I had been stressing about the 99 kmmark (951 steps) leading up to this event which after the previous terrain I just tookin my stride as the roar of the crowds above give you that last burst to bring youhome after a solid 19 hours.
Thank you to UTA 100 and to all my friends and family that have shownunconditional support along this incredible journey...
