May 16, 2019

It has been over five months since we started looking for an Interim Pastor, but I finally have an

update that I think all have been praying for and anxiously waiting for. Over the past two weeks Council has

been meeting with our Dean, Pastor Chris McKinstry and a prospective Interim Pastor. Last week we were

finally able to secure our Interim Pastor.

So who is he? Our Interim Pastor is Pastor Wayne Shelor (pronounced shee-lore). Pastor Shelor was

born, raised, and went to school in Christiansburg, VA. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University in

Richmond and graduated from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 1986. His past work

experience includes Pastor Shelor serving three congregations in the Virginia Synod, then as the Executive

Director of Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp and Retreat Center. After this time frame Pastor Shelor started

his Interim Pastor career and to date has served as interim to four congregations, the most recent at St. Paul’s

Lutheran Church in Lionsville, PA. Pastor Shelor is married to his wife Vikki and they have three adult

children. Pastor Shelor and his wife currently reside in Limerick, PA.

Pastor Shelor is finishing up his work with St. Paul’s and will officially start with us on Monday,

June 17, 2019. His first worship service with us will be June 23rd (our picnic service). Please come out that

Sunday to welcome Pastor Shelor to our congregation. Just a reminder once Pastor Shelor starts he will not

only be our lead in our Call process but also serve as our Pastor, assuming all customary roles.

We are grateful to have Pastor Shelor lead us in our next phase and welcome him to Jerusalem.

Sincerely,

Eric Foster

2019 Graduates

Jerusalem is proud of the following young men and women who will be high school and college graduates this spring. We congratulate both the graduates and their families for

the hard work and dedication needed to reach this milestone in their lives and wish them continued success in their post-graduate education and careers.

May the Church play a continuing role in their young lives. Hopefully we have included everyone but if not, please let the Church office know!

We will add on next Good News Newsletter.

High School

Brendan Elvidge, Perkiomen Valley

Ava Hawks, Spring-Ford

Brett Kuiken, Perkiomen Valley

Paige Tyson, Perkiomen Valley

College

Helena Mancini, Penn State University

Zachary Moser, Penn State University

Kristi Szczesny, Emerson College in Boston

Celebrating 26 years of providing scholarships to members of Jerusalem Church, it is a pleasure to announce AVA HAWKS and BRETT KUIKEN as the 2019 recipients. Ava and Brett are the 49th and 50th recipients of this honor. As a reminder, the Scholarship fund was established to honor Pastor Kenneth S. Ensminger for his years of leadership and service at JELC.

AVA HAWKS, a Spring-Ford High School student and active member of Jerusalem, has received distinguished honors during her school years and is an active and committed member of the Color Guard at Spring-Ford having joined this group in middle school and continuing through high school. Her leadership and participation in Color Guard has provided her with challenges and opportunities to help build a guard of 40 members. As captain she is a highly motivated and talented leader who led the Guard to its first championship winning season in 5 years. She is noted by her Director as enthusiastic, focused and dedicated. Ava’s

career choice is interior design which she will begin to pursue at Harcum College. Ava is a familiar face at JELC serving in many activities along with her family and parents, David and Tricia Hawks.

BRETT KUIKEN, a Perkiomen Valley High School student, is an aspiring music industry bound recipient. Musician and song writer, Brett is prepared to seek his career in Nashville, Tennessee. Majoring in Music Business at Belmont, a Christian-based Liberal Arts University in Nashville, Brett will have the opportunity to be part of internships and volunteering in the industry. He has been writing his own songs and recording since he began playing the guitar in 6th grade. Playing football for four years, Brett received All League honors. Volunteerism is important to Brett as he speaks of his experience in Shooting Stars

Basketball Camp, where he worked with kids with autism and witnessed some of the biggest smiles and loudest laughs that he had ever heard, recognizing that disabilities do not get in the way of fun. Participating in the 30 Hour Famine here at Jerusalem impacted Brett to recognize the reality of hunger in many parts of our country and the world. This volunteerism has encouraged Brett to seek other opportunities to serve others. We congratulate Brett and his family and parents, Jill and Calvin Kuiken.

We applaud AVA and BRETT as they seek further education away from our community and wish them the best of luck on each step forward. Thanks to the members of Jerusalem who continue to support the

Scholarship Fund and provide our outstanding young leaders with enthusiastic recognition.

Membership Committee Join us for Refreshments in the Coffee Corner

following the worship service! Please volunteer to provide simple refreshments! Sign up on the Poster on the Bulletin Board! Come out and enjoy the fellowship during the summer!!!!

Outdoor Service & Church Picnic on Sunday, June 23rd at 10:00 AM at the Upper Salford Township Park.

The Membership committee will provide hotdogs, hamburgers, rolls, beans, sauerkraut and beverages. We ask that everyone

attending bring either a salad or dessert.

There will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board for a headcount only so we know how many hotdogs, hamburgers

and beans to buy. Bring your bats, gloves and baseballs/softballs along with any other outdoor games you may have to

play. You may also want to bring a lawn chair along.

Hope to see everyone there for a good time and fellowship!!

This event will be held rain or shine. In the case of rain, we will worship at the Church and the picnic will be in the Social Hall.

Thank you so much for the Ensminger Scholarship, I loved talking to everyone that day. This scholarship will definitely help me for the future.

Thanks again to the whole congregation! -Ava Hawks

Many thanks for Joe's Easter bag with many cards and goodies. Joe was in Rehab on Easter, and his cards and the lovely decorated bag was on display in his room. Many of his caregivers remarked on how nice they were and what a wonderful congregation we belong to. We pray that our congregation remains strong as we wait for an Interim Pastor and eventually a new Pastor to lead us on our faith jouney. Keep the Faith!! We are keeping you all in our prayers with wishes for a beautiful Spring.

With love, Marcia and Joe

JELC friends,

Paul and I thank you for your cards,

calls, visits, prayers and flowers during

my most recent hospital stay. I'm sure

they will donate a room in my name!

We are happy to be part of the JELC

"family". Who ever said you can't choose

JELC.

Dear Jerusalem Church, I would like to thank you for awarding me the Ensminger Scholarship. Also, thank you for the kind words you had to say about me before the congregation.

I will make sure that this award is put to good use.

Sincerely, Brett Kuiken

A very Special thank you to Esther Bergen and Bob Rhoads for taking the time to help out with little tasks around the church and church building.

Esther, thank you for coming out and help spruce up the flower beds in front of the church building.

Bob, thank you so much for repairing the broken boards on the porch in the church office! Now I don’t have to fear getting my heels stuck in between the boards.

The work that every single volunteer puts in is never unnoticed! It is always greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!!

CARE TEAM

One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth the doing

is what we do for others – Lewis Carroll

Sunshine Friend’s birthdays: June 17 – Janice Witte, July 7 – Karen Greeby

a. We discussed the status of our Sunshine Friends. b. Information was given regarding a bus trip to Sight and Sound in 2020 to see “Esther”. Give it some thought and more information will be available in the upcoming months. c. Care Team will be doing refreshments in the “coffee corner” on May 26 following the first summer service at

9:15 a.m. See you there.

Next meeting is June 20, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. in the Youth Center.

REMINDER: FLOWERS…FLOWERS Please note that when you sign up for ALTAR FLOWERS and/or CHANCEL FLOWERS on the bulletin board in the Narthex, it would be a big help to the Care Team Committee if you check either “for shut-ins” or “pickup” columns. It would save us from having to contact the donor since we deliver the “for shut-ins” flowers to the sick and/or shut-ins the following week. We thank you for your donation and cooperation.

Care Team Wants to Help!

Recently, we have had a number of our members hospitalized, injured, or in need of other assistance. With this increase, we wanted to make sure we haven't missed anyone! To help accomplish this we are asking for your assistance. If you are aware of any church member who would like the congregation to be made aware of their current situation or are in need of specific help please contact either Glenda Ortiz (office 610-287-7104) or The Care Team: (Babs deFrenes 610-287-7150; Sue Fulmer 215-767-0405 or Gail Bell 215-872-6191) to confidentially discuss and help to address your specific needs.

Thank you.

This year Confirmation will

be on June 2 Congratulations to our confirmand!

June will be a month of changes and transitions at Jerusalem Lutheran Nursery School and Day Care. First, we are looking forward to the start of Summer Camp which will begin on June 17th. We have enjoyed a great school year filled with

learning and laughter. Now we are anticipating an action-packed summer full of adventure and excitement. In addition, with the retirements of Judy Bubeck in May, Josephine Malatesta in June, and Linda Funk in August, we are saying goodbye to some very well-loved, experienced, talented, and dedicated teachers who will be greatly missed. We wish them all the best! We are praying that God will bless our school with teachers who possess the same wonderful qualities as these dear ladies who are retiring. As we begin this new chapter of JLNS&DC, we are anxious to see all that God has in store for us!

The JELC family is cordially invited to attend a party in honor of Josephine Malatesta and her retirement from JLNS&DC. The party will take place on Friday, June 7th from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm in the social hall. Please join us for cake, punch and memories as we thank Josephine for her 28 years of hard work and devotion to our school! If you have any questions, please call the JLNS&DC office at 610 287-6360.

Recently, the JLNS&DC staff participated in a training on fire safety, first-aid and CPR. The training was presented by a certified safety specialist. The training is a requirement for all state licensed child care facilities. The staff recognizes the importance of being prepared for all types of emergencies. In addition, the safety and well-being of all of the children in our care is our top priority.

Altar flowers consist of the two bouquets, one on either side of the altar. The cost of altar flowers is $35, Chancel flowers consist of one arrangement, usually placed under the cross. The cost of chancel flowers is $25. More than one family can donate chancel flowers on any given Sunday.

After the final church service the flowers are yours to keep. The vases for the altar flowers must stay at the church, so please only take the insert of flowers (the bouquets) with you. There are plastic containers found in the plastic box in the Narthex (which do not need to be returned) in which to carry your altar flowers home. The chancel flower arrangement can be taken as is. Any flowers remaining on Monday will be taken to shut-ins or those in the hospital.

ANYONE can donate altar or chancel flowers. Please just take a moment to sign up and write a dedication in the “MESSAGE” box about whom you would like to honor or remember. Also, please indicate if you wish to take the flowers or whether Senior Concerns can deliver them to our shut-ins.

The sign-up sheet and order forms are on the bulletin board across from the Coffee Corner.

Any questions or comments about the flowers are welcome. Please contact the Church Office. Thank you.
