1st Grade Independent Readers
From Mr. Blomberg’s class, Evan, who shows great persistence when he reads. Evan is consist-
ently using vowel patterns more and more to decode unfamiliar words and he doesn’t give
up. His expression has greatly improved over the past few months. Mr. Blomberg says, “Evan has
accomplished many goals this year. He makes excellent connections with his reading. He contin-
ues to work diligently to become a champion reader!”
Also from Mr. Blomberg’s class, Allora, who has worked hard and made a lot of progress as a read-
er. She is remembering to use vowel patterns more regularly, especially silent /e/. Her expression
has improved over the school year. When she reads with confidence, she reads with expres-
sion. Mr. Blomberg says, “Allora works hard. She faces each day with a good attitude and I see
her growing and adding skills to help her become a champion reader!”
Also from Mr. Blomberg’s class, Jack, who has also developed into an amazing reader over the
year. His accuracy has improved and he has worked hard on the “whiner” sounds, which used to
trick him. He is a masterful “chunker” of big words. He has developed a confidence as he reads
with better expression every week! Mr. Blomberg says, “Jack is doing a great job and I appreciate
his hard work. He is a champion!”
From Mr. Blomberg’s class, Jack, who has made great strides as a reader this year. Jack’s accuracy
and growing confidence are his greatest accomplishments as a reader. He uses the strategies we
have practiced to sound out words successfully. He always brings in great connections to his read-
ing! Mr. Blomberg says, “Jack has made so much progress over the past 7 months! I am so proud
of him! He is a champion reader!”
From Mrs. Paul’s class, Zachary, who is doing a fantastic job using accuracy strategies to problem
solve words. Zach consistently blends across words and uses vowel patterns. He also has learned
to cross check and when a word doesn’t sound right or make sense he will go back and reread to
figure it out! Mrs. Paul cheered, “Zach, you are doing a great job! I love listening to you read!”
Also from Mrs. Paul’s class, Landin! Landin has worked very hard on his ability to match the
sounds to the letters from the beginning to the end of words. Landin also is able to use ULTI-
MATE READING STRATEGY by using the “get your mouth ready” sound with skip the word and
come back! This make Landin and UNSTOPPABLE READER! Mrs. Paul giddily cheered, “ Landin,
you are the Houdini of reading. You magically make words appear! Keep it up buddy!”
From Mrs. Paul’s class, Mason! Mason has done a fantastic job developing accuracy strategies. He
has mastered his vowel patterns and is able to chunk 3 and 4 syllable words, woo hoo! Also, Ma-
son is able to comprehend like a rock star and can tell key details as well as power connections to
characters. Mrs. Paul excitedly cheered, “Mason, listening to you brings joy to my world! Keep it
up!”
