June 2020June 2020The mission of the Chamber of Commerce is to promote progressive community and

economic development to benefit Chamber members and the North Iowa region.

We're Here for YouWhile “Plan A” may have been waylaid and “Plan B” postponed, we look forward to moving to “Plan See”…perhaps more aptly named “Plan Wait-and-See.”

We know you’re struggling, and we’re struggling, too. The Chamber staff has tried hard over the past few months to be a resource for you to connect to programs, tips, and pick-me-ups that can help your employees and your business make it through to the “New Normal”…whatever that may be.

UNPRECEDENTEDt’s that word again. I know we’re sick of hearing it, but I’m willing to bet “unprecedented” will be the Webster Dictionary Word of the Year for 2020. The term is an adjective meaning “never done or known before” - and every politician, community leader, news

reporter, committee chair, event planner, business owner, employee, student, health care worker, and basically, anyone who talks--has probably uttered this word more than once in the past few months.

Unprecedented or not, we all hate COVID-19…this virus that has stolen so much from so many. We’ll be feeling its impact for a long time. But we’re figuring out how to move forward—and my money is on North Iowans to battle back faster than most. We’re resourceful and we care about each other—and we’ll use these two things to get back on track. We’ll wear masks, maintain physical distances, gather in groups of fewer than 10, and do anything else it takes to get back to work.

This is about keeping our people—family, employees, customers—safe, while keeping our businesses afloat, too. At the Chamber, we are committed to making it easier for you to do just that. You can count on us to provide information you can trust to help you make informed decisions. We’ll connect you to resources so you can continue to do business in the days and weeks and months ahead.

The work we do at the Chamber is NOT unprecedented. It is what we do all day every day to make North Iowa a better place to live and do business. We are in this together. We are a tool for you. Use us. We can come out of this crisis stronger as businesses, and stronger as a community.

Tooting Our Own Horn!MASON CITY CLAIMS CHAMBER OF THE YEAR HONOR

The Iowa Chamber of Commerce Executives (ICCE) organization awarded its most prestigious honor to the Mason City Chamber of Commerce. The "Chamber of the Year" award recognizes an Iowa chamber for superior service to the business community; contributions to community and economic development; maintaining sound fiscal policies and organizational management; and government advocacy efforts.

The Mason City Chamber has a long history (104 years and counting) of serving the business community through progressive community and economic development. In its early days, the Chamber established several community mainstays that are still in existence:

• The Mason City Municipal Band (1920)• The United Way (1923)• The Mason City Municipal Airport (1927)• The North Iowa Band Festival (1936)

In 2007, the Chamber served as the applicant for Mason City’s Vision Iowa project—which resulted in a $9 million award to assist in the renovation of the public library; restoration of the Historic Park Inn Hotel; construction of the Robert McCoy Architectural Interpretive Center; and downtown streetscape improvements.

Tooting Our Own Horn! continued

The Mason City Chamber was the first in Iowa to offer international travel opportunities as a way to assist North Iowans in the transition to a global economy. Since 2011, the Chamber has led tours to China (five times), India, Turkey, Cuba, Australia/New Zealand (twice), Peru, Germany, South Africa (three times), Spain/Portugal, Egypt, and Japan.

The Chamber served as a key partner in Mason City’s 2012 selection as a Blue Zones Project pilot community and in the 2014 successful certification as a Blue Zones Project Community. The organization also served as a lead partner in Mason City’s original selection and re-designation as an Iowa Great Place.

As a proponent for public art and place-making, the Chamber leads several community initiatives. The River City Sculptures on Parade program has its home at the Chamber. In 2017, the Chamber started the “Building Our Brand” mural project to beautify the backs of downtown buildings which actually serve as the entrance to Mason City’s Downtown. These murals, which feature geometric designs in the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright, help promote the community’s growing reputation as an architectural destination. This summer, the chamber is working on a new project to beautify utility boxes in the downtown area.

Partnering with the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation and regional leaders, the Chamber helped initiate the Vision North Iowa strategic plan. This project will bolster entrepreneurship, support future growth and workforce development initiatives, position the region for success, and enhance North Iowa’s quality of place.

The Chamber’s innovative Community Concierge service helps businesses with professional and executive recruitment and retention. Its leadership programs (YIELD-for high school students; College Connections-for college summer interns; and Leadership North Iowa—for young professionals) help prepare the region’s next generations of leaders by providing them with a seat at the table and connecting them to the community and to each other.

ICCE is the state’s leading professional development organization for the industry. The selection panel assessed the Mason City Chamber as financially strong, and with a reputation for attracting the region’s best business minds to serve on its board of directors. In addition, the local chamber’s staff is well-qualified, committed to professional development, and has a low rate of turn-over. They found the chamber’s program of work is true to its mission of promoting progressive community and economic development to benefit chamber members and the North Iowa region.

Robin Anderson has served as the Chamber’s President and CEO since 2001. Marketing & Leadership Development Director Allyson Krull joined the staff in 2014 and Membership Director Colleen Frein has been on the team since 2015. In 2016, Kativa Weitzel, who had previously served as a college intern, was hired as Program Director. Most recently, in March of 2020, Stephanie Arneson joined the team as Service & Operations Director and Community Concierge.

Business Intern Toolkits Availablehe Chamber’s College Connections program will be held a little differently this summer. Many businesses are choosing to limit the number of interns on-site or have decided to host interns virtually. College Connections is a valuable retention tool to encourage interns to return to North Iowa for employment after

college.

Chamber staff created a College Connections “toolkit” for North Iowa interns. All businesses hiring summer interns are encouraged to register them for this program. Physical and online resources will be presented to interns once registered. Contact Program Director, Kativa Weitzel at the Chamber ([email protected]) for details.

Stephanie Arneson Joins Chamber Staff

That's a Wrap!

Stephanie Arneson joined the Chamber team on March 9th as the Service & Operations Director. She is responsible for membership service and administration, operations, building & grounds and assisting the North Iowa Builder’s Exchange.

In addition to service and operations, Stephanie will serve as Community Concierge. Stephanie is available to assist member employees and their spouses with accessing services and getting connected in the North Iowa region. This is a strategy intended to accommodate workforce attraction and retention.

For the past six years, Stephanie has been employed as the Office Manager at Demro Orthodontics/North Iowa Orthodontics. She holds a degree from North Iowa Area Community College. Stephanie is a Mason City native, and she and her husband Shaun, are the parents of five children: Lindsey and Zach Arneson, and Rhett, Brianna and Elle Buffington. In their free time they enjoy going to concerts and are planning the wedding of their daughter Brianna this fall.

The “Building Our Brand” mural project has expanded to utility box wraps, thanks to the Chamber Foundation and a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. You’ll start seeing this new form of public art pop up along the downtown “loop”. Future phases call for wrapping Alliant utility boxes in highly-visible locations, too. The Chamber hired members Jim Zach of Zgrafix Design and Bob LeDoux of LeDoux Signs to create and install the wraps.

Congratulations to the Chamber members celebrating membership anniversaries in April, May, and June!

hile North Iowans weren't able to gather in masses to enjoy the North Iowa Band Festival this year, Band Festival Spirit Week offered a variety of entertainment for North Iowa to enjoy amid the pandemic.

Activities included a Memorial Service on Meredith Willson’s birthday to honor his musical contributions to River City. Mason City High School Drum Majors presented a short program highlighting Willson’s lifetime accomplishments.

Past North Iowa Band Festival Royalty were interviewed by emcee Chris Frenz about their Band Festival experiences. Queen Alana Noss of Rockford is pursuing a degree in Cosmetology and King Jacob VerHelst of Central Springs is attending Iowa State University for an Agricultural Engineering degree. They both recounted their excitement during last year’s parade and awards ceremony.

Virtual entertainment was performed through the Band Festival Facebook page. "Brad+Kate" played an acoustic set from their basement staged as a beautiful backyard patio. Brad+Kate were originally scheduled to perform at this year’s festival and have been rebooked for 2021. Friday night’s online performance was Betsy and Tom Kirby from the local favorite band “Betty & the Gents.” The couple played a special “Music Man”-themed show in honor of Band Fest.

The BIG Reverse Parade east of Central Park was a huge success! Instead of floats tossing treats to those watching, Chamber members tossed candy to the vehicles. An endless stream of cars from all across North Iowa drove through to receive candy from Festival organizers. The Music Man soundtrack filled the air, wooden and inflatable band members lined the street, a firetruck hung a giant American flag, and a

banner proclaiming “Welcome to River City, USA” framed the scene.

Festival organizers are extremely grateful for the community support during this exceptionally difficult year. Band Festival Spirit Week was another example proving this community will always be #NorthIowaStrong.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE JUNE 19TH, 2020After careful consideration, Main Street Mason City has decided to move our June Friday Night Live event to a virtual experience. The safety of our vendors, community members, local businesses, and those who attend the event is our main focus.

While we are disappointed we will not be able to physically be with our community members for the event, we still want to provide an opportunity to connect. Join us for a virtual Friday Night Live experience with Betty & The Gents,

Levi Smith, and Juni West from 7PM-9PM on Friday, June 19th. More details on the virtual event will be shared soon on our Main Street Mason City Facebook page and mainstreetmasoncity.com.

BOWS OF SUPPORTThe Mason City Jaycees have partnered with MSMC to show their support and thank the medical staff and support teams, police, firefighters and first responders for all their hard work, dedication, and commitment to keeping everyone safe.

In honor of them, we decided to paint the town lime green! You will see lime green bows adorning trees, light posts and benches around Central Park and the entire MercyOne campus in Mason City, the police and fire station and healthcare clinics across North Iowa. These bows signify the strength and dedication of the incredible employees and staff, but mostly thanks and appreciation.

NORTH IOWA SMALL BUSINESS RECOVERY & CONTINUITY FUND GRANTS DISTRIBUTED TO 119 AREA BUSINESSES

JUNE 2020

JOYCE MARTINMARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

[email protected]

IN MAY, NORTH IOWA CORRIDOR EDC DISTRIBUTED AWARDS from the Small Business Recovery & Continuity Fund to 119 local businesses totaling $416,995.

Created in partnership with the City of Clear Lake, the City of Mason City, and Cerro Gordo County, this fund offers essential financial relief to small businesses facing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These awards will provide critical short-term assistance to our small businesses to maintain or reopen business operations,” said NIC President and CEO Chad Schreck. Just over 150 businesses completed the final application for the program, requesting a total of more than $680,000 in assistance. The grants awarded through the program range from $1,000-$5,000.

The fund began with a total of $518,500 available to allocate. Schreck said Mason City contributed $300,000; Clear Lake and Cerro Gordo County each contributed $100,000; and the Hanson Foundation, through MBT, donated $15,000. Carrie Tysdahl, with American Solutions for Business, sold T-shirts with the slogan “Together We Rise” and raised $3,500 for this Recovery and Continuity Fund.

Recipients are encouraged to work with the NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and Small

Business Development Center, according to Schreck, to help them manage this financially stressful time.Northwestern Steakhouse in Mason City, which has been serving diners for 100 years, received $4,500 from the fund to help offset losses due to the pandemic. “I’m so grateful and want to extend that gratitude to whoever was part of the decision-making process. I really appreciate it,” said Ann Papouchis, co-owner/co-operator of the restaurant.

When Iowa closed all dine-in restaurants in March due to the COVID-19 threat, Papouchis said the steakhouse tried serving carry-out for four days before closing altogether. “We didn’t feel like we had safe processes in place.”

After careful planning, Northwestern Steakhouse aimed to reopen after Memorial Day for curbside pickup only, with hours from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and some menu changes. “I’m looking forward to opening up,” she said in May. “I hope people will be patient with us.”

Papouchis said the grant money will help with the transition to temporary curbside service. They bought a new cooler and will be stocking up on carry-out and sanitation supplies, which she described as “a huge hit, for a use we didn’t have before.”

In the first review round for the Small Business Recovery & Continuity Fund,

applicants that had received Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) Small Business Grant Funding were set aside to ensure businesses that had not received grant assistance were prioritized. Applications were reviewed on factors including but not limited to: negative financial impacts on the business, expenses/need, and longevity in the community.

Additional grant recipients will be notified following ongoing reviews of existing applications. The full program details and ongoing updates, including a list of recipients, can be found at w w w . n o r t h i o w a c o r r i d o r . c o m /recoveryfund.

As of May 21, sixty-three businesses in Cerro Gordo County had received a total of $1,264,436 from the IEDA program. That fund continues to make new awards weekly, and they are working to be able to fund many of the remaining backlog of applications as federal funds help to replenish it.

Schreck said, “In addition to state and local funds, our local banks have done an incredible job working with businesses to bring in significant funding through the federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) programs. We are very encouraged by the amount of financial assistance coming into the community, and the resilience and innovation businesses have shown in managing through this unprecedented situation.”

Community Profile Magazine

Membership Renewals (cont.)

Every two years, the Chamber partners with Town Square Publications to publish a Community Profile Magazine to highlight North Iowa. In the most recent edition, more than 100 Chamber members elected to place an ad in this colorful quality-of-life magazine distributed throughout the Chamber's service area and online. With the current business climate, the Chamber has elected to postpone the publication by a year. Project Manager Michael Holmes will return to Mason City next April to meet with members about advertising opportunities.

Golf Outing Moved to July 30The Chamber Golf Outing is rescheduled to Thursday, July 30 at the Mason City Country Club. This decision was made in order to follow the PGA recommended social distancing and mass gathering guidelines. While the event may not have a traditional format, it is sure to be a good time!

This popular annual event fills up quickly, so don’t wait to register! Registrations will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis and include green fees, a meal, and two carts per team. Hole sponsorships are available for $350. Golfers will have the opportunity to vote on the best hole sponsor. The sponsor with the most votes will be awarded a complimentary team at next year’s outing.

To register, visit the Chamber website www.masoncityia.com. Questions can be directed to Kativa at [email protected].
