FROM FATHER CHUCK Joyful greetings on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ! While we honor

and celebrate and receive the Body and Blood of Christ every Sunday, twice each year we highlight the special gift of this sacrament: Holy Thursday and today. The word “covenant” appears in each of our readings today. The same word is used at every Mass when the priest prays the words of consecration, part of the institution narrative, over the bread and wine. Typically, a covenant is an agreement between two parties that has rights and duties on both sides. Sometimes those rights and duties are conditional on one another. However, as we use it in the context of our faith and as we see it used by the Lord in Sacred Scriptures, God’s covenant is unconditional. The blood shed by the Lord Jesus, which seals the covenant between God and his people, is poured out for the love of all without demanding anything in return. As St. Paul says, God remains faithful because God cannot deny himself, even when we deny God by our words and actions. Celebrating and receiving from the table of the Lord reminds us, as we heard in last week’s gospel, that he is with us “until the end of the age” and that God’s love is poured out for us always. In justice and joy, our only response to this perpetual covenant is to pour out our love in return, to God and to all God created. If we are honest, as faithful people, we often may act out of obli-gation, out of what we know is right or what we ought to do. But that is part of being shaped in the cove-nant. When we truly understand that the Body and Blood of Christ is not something we “get” but some-thing we do, we are on our way to more fully living out our side of the covenant as disciples of Jesus Christ who said, “Do this in memory of me.”

Many of us remember when today’s solemnity was called the feast of Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) and so this weekend we also pray for Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Carson City. Corpus Christi was established in 1949, in what was known as the Stewart Washoe Indian Colony, to serve the indigenous people of that community. The parish rented the land from the Washoe Tribe under a long-term lease. Over the next five decades, changes to the Stewart community happened and additional growth in the area brought other peoples and cultures to the parish. For many years, the Pallottine Fa-thers, a missionary community from Ireland, staffed Corpus Christi. Diocesan priests in more recent times have pastored the parish, including Fr. Ariel Arias, now retired, and their current, long-time pastor, Fr. Jim Setelik. The tiny, stone church originally constructed on the property eventually became too small for the community. It was under Fr. Jim, in the first decade of the 2000’s, that the parish decided to relocate south, just across the Douglas County line, and a new multi-purpose building with church, hall & offices, was erected. It sits in a valley not far from US 395. When the church was built there was a plan for the development of many houses in the area. Shortly after, the housing bubble burst so that has yet to come to fruition and the parish carries a heavy debt. However, as the market returns, I expect more homes will be planned again between Carson City and Gardnerville which can be served by Corpus Christi parish. Congratulations on their feast day to the many good folks of this parish, their pastor and staff!

A hearty congratulations to all the children who received their First Holy Communion this Saturday. It is always an exciting day for them & for their families. We pray in thanksgiving for: Mateo Alcala Cruz, Juan Miguel de Leon Cortez, Sahiel de la Torre, Camila Lugo, Crimson McGuire, Alexander Mendoza Quintana, Natalie Orellana Rodas, Fabian Palomar, and Sebastian Rizza. Congratulations one and all, and welcome to the table of the Lord at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral!

Although we returned to Ordinary Time following the celebration of Pentecost and the conclusion of Easter, we have had the special solemnities of Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ these last couple of Sundays. Next weekend, you will see a return to the green colors in the sanctuary, signifying Ordinary Time, which gets its name not from being “ordinary” but for the counting of weeks in order by number from now until Advent. The “counting” actually began at the conclusion of the Christmas Season in January. It ceased when Lent started. We continued when the Easter Season ended. Only August 15 with the celebration of the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and November 21 when we will celebrate Christ the King, will provide a break in the naming of each Sunday by a number. Let us pray that as the number of the week rises so we will see a rise in the return to in-person worship and vibrant parishes renewed throughout our diocese. 😊

BLESSINGS TO ALL THIS TENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME!

¡BENDICIONES A TODOS ESTA X SEMANA EN EL TIEMPO ORDINARIO!
