TODAY’S WORSHIP FOCUS
God calls people out of boundless grace. In our Scripture Lessons for today we
will hear of our Lord’s calling of Moses, Paul, and Matthew. Each was flawed, but
each was forgiven and used to accomplish the Lord’s work. That same grace has
been showered on us so that we can live at peace with God and serve him with
the gifts he has given us.
WISCONSIN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN SYNOD

INVOCATION AND GREETING
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: And also with you.

According to
Jesus’ promise,
hear the words
of forgiveness
(Absolution) as if
Jesus himself
was speaking.
Through his
church he
announces the
forgiveness of
sins to his
people.
This canticle is
based on Psalm
34:8 and Psalm
119:89. This is a
joyful song —
we have just
heard that our
sins are forgiven
and are about to
hear the Word
of God!
CONFESSION OF SINS
M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love
and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him
and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us
confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.
C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.
In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not
deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my
Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing
love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the
perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has
removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God
give you strength to live according to his will.
C: Amen.
M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
OH, TASTE AND SEE
5
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: Let us pray.
O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our
prayers. Be gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength
to keep your commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus
Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON Exodus 3:1-15
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law,
the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert
and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD
appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that
though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I
will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn
up.”
When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to
him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.”
“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for
the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then he said, “I am
the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the
God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to
look at God.
The LORD said, “I have indeed
seen the misery of my people in
Egypt. I have heard them crying
out because of their slave drivers,
and I am concerned about their
suffering. So I have come down to
rescue them from the hand of the
Egyptians and to bring them up
out of that land into a good and
spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the
Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. And
now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way
the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to
Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh
and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
Prior to this
reading, Moses
had failed in his
efforts to free his
people. He was
an exiled killer,
living in the
wilderness. While
he was correct to
wonder why God
would choose
him, Moses went
too far and
questioned God.
God’s answer is
the repeated
word “I.” The
solution was not
Moses’ abilities,
but God’s grace.
7
And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you
that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out
of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to
them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me,
‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say
to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God
of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God
of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by
which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.”

PSALM OF THE DAY
Psalm 119c
Oh, how I love your law!*
I meditate on it all day long.
I have more insight than all my teachers,*
for I meditate on your statutes.
I have more understanding than the elders,*
for I obey your precepts.
Refrain
I have kept my feet from every evil path*
so that I might obey your Word.
I have not departed from your laws,*
for you yourself have taught me.
How sweet are your words to my taste,*
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Refrain
Throughout
Psalm 119, the
Psalmist marvels
at the Word of
God. It reveals
God’s grace and
unleashes God’s
power in our
lives!
9
Another
surprising choice
by God. God
would use Saul,
a persecutor of
the Church, to
expand the
Church. Why?
Because God is
gracious!
“Alleluia” indeed!
The words we
sing quote John
21:31. John’s
summary of his
Gospel remind us
why we are
delighted to hear
the Word of God
— it directs us
to Jesus as our
Savior! Alleluia!
SECOND LESSON 1 Timothy 1:12-17
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he
considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. Even though
I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was
shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of
our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and
love that are in Christ Jesus.
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ
Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the
worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the
worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as
an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal
life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be
honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 9:9-13
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man
named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s
booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got
up and followed him.
While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s
house, many tax collectors and “sinners” came and
ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees
saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your
teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a
doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy,
not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

The Pharisees
knew the
Scriptures and

Jesus chose
Matthew, a

him. Jesus wants
our hearts to

that we too will
follow him in
true faith.

The author of
this hymn faced
two major
tragedies that
led him to write
this hymn. First,
he was
financially ruined
by the Chicago
fire of 1871.
Then, as he
worked to
rebuild the city,
he planned a trip
for his family to
help with
outreach work in
England.
Detained by
business, he sent
his wife and four
daughters ahead.
Their ship,
named Ville Du
Havre (note the
title of the hymn
tune) was struck
by another ship
and only his wife
survived. With
these events in
his mind, he
wrote this hymn
about the peace
that was his
because of
Christ. What a
witness to God’s
grace!

This creed was
not written by
the apostles. It
receives its name
because it
accurately
summarizes
what the
apostles taught
about the Triune
God. How do we
know what they
taught? They
were inspired to
record their
teachings in the
Scriptures.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles’ Creed
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father
almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Spoken by the Minister.

LORD’S PRAYER
M: Hear us, Lord, as we pray in Jesus’ name.
C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy
kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever
and ever. Amen.

HYMN
377 vs. 1, 7-10 | Dear Christians, One and All Rejoice
C: s Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice,
With exultation springing,
And, with united heart and voice
And holy rapture singing,
Proclaim the wonders God has done,
How his right arm the vict’ry won.
How dearly it has cost him!
To me he spoke, "Hold fast to me—
I am your rock and castle.
Your ransom I myself will be;
For you I strive and wrestle.
For I am yours, your friend divine,
And evermore you shall be mine;
The foe shall not divide us.

This hymn by
Martin Luther
was the first
congregational
hymn that he
wrote. Because
of its clear and
straightforward
teaching of God’s
grace, it became
a popular
evangelism tool
in Germany. One
of Luther’s
contemporaries
wrote, “I do not
doubt that
through this one
hymn of Luther
many hundreds
of Christians
have been
brought to the
truth faith.”
14
"The foe shall shed my precious blood,
Me of my life bereaving.
All this I suffer for your good;
Be steadfast and believing.
Life shall from death the vict’ry win;
My innocence shall bear your sin,
And you are blest forever.
"Now to my Father I depart,
The Holy Spirit sending
And, heav’nly wisdom to impart,
My help to you extending.
He will a source of comfort be,
Teach you to know and follow me,
And in all truth will guide you.
"What I on earth have lived and taught
Be all your life and teaching;
So shall my kingdom’s work be wrought
And honored in your preaching.
Take care that no one’s man-made laws
Should e’er destroy the gospel’s cause.
This final word I leave you."

COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION
Next weekend, Sunday, June 28 and Monday, June 29, we will celebrate the
Lord’s Supper in our worship services. In order to maintain social distancing, we
will use a continuous line distribution method.
Communicants will be ushered out into the center aisle. At the front of the
center aisle, a Pastor will place the wafer in your hand. You should stand there
and eat it. Behind the first Pastor will be a table with trays of the individual cups.
The other Pastor will invite you to “Take and drink.” Again, you should remain
standing there as you drink.
After receiving the Sacrament, you may exit in either direction to the side aisle.
There will be a basket for you to dispose of your individual cup as well as a
bottle of hand sanitizer, if you would chose to use it.
Please move at a pace that is comfortable for you. This method of distributing
the Lord’s Supper is not intended to hurry your reception of Christ’s body and
blood.
23
GUIDELINES OF WORSHIP
• If you or anyone in your family feels sick, we would ask you to please stay
home.
• Please be very careful to maintain distance from each other as you enter and
exit the building.
• Each worship service will accommodate 60-65 people. Until further notice,
you will be required to sign up for which service you will attend so that we
can manage the number of people and maintain adequate spacing.
• To keep space between worshipers, we will only use every third pew (there
will be two empty pews between each group).
• Families can sit together. Individuals or couples will be asked to sit on one
side of a pew. If there is room, we will put another individual on the other end
of that pew.
• The ushers will seat you as you enter. They will begin in the front and work
toward the back in order to more easily maintain the spacing of the
worshipers. (Families with small children will be still be allowed to sit in the
back.)
• We will not pass the offering plate during the service. Plates will be stationed
at the front and back of the church to receive your offerings.
• At the end of the service, the ushers will dismiss the congregation by rows. In
order to avoid a large crowd, we must ask that you do not congregate in the
narthex, but that you exit the building.
• To sign up for a service you can either contact the Church office or use the
tool included in our FlockNotes emails.
