There are lots of different topics covered in this week’s material. We felt like this was what our family needed to focus on, but make sure to look over the manual to choose what the kids you teach might need the most. 1. Scripture Hop – Follow instructions on page 3 below for a scripture hop for D&C 75:3. 2. Potato/Tool Game: The family manual says, “You can help your family understand how the Lord wants us to serve Him by talking about the difference between being ‘idle’ and ‘labor[ing] with [our] might.’ Perhaps you could select some household chores and invite family members to demonstrate doing those chores idly and then with all their might.” Show pictures on page 4 below. Use them to talk about he difference between “being idle” and “laboring with your might.” Sing “When We’re Helping We’re Happy”. Take turns choosing a chore to pretend to do. If possible, get a potato to represent being idle and some kind of work/cleaning tool to represent laboring with all your might. Whoever chose the chore will hold up either the potato or tool. If they hold up the potato, everyone will demonstrate doing that chore idly. If they hold up the tool, everyone will pretend to do that chore with all their might. Listen to “When We’re Helping We’re Happy” while pretending to do the chores. 3. Situation Role-Play/Discussion: Discuss/role-play showing how working hard can help with the following situations (from The Friend): Read the Following Stories and talk about the importance of work: Dieter Uchtdorf story about working hard (on page 5 below). Dylan’s Saturday Surprise” story from The Friend about cleaning the church. June 28-July 4

There are lots of different topics covered in this week’s material. We felt like this was what our family needed to focus

on, but make sure to look over the manual to choose what the kids you teach might need the most.

1. Scripture Hop – Follow instructions on page 3 below for a scripture hop for D&C 75:3.

2. Potato/Tool Game: The family manual says, “You can help your family understand how the Lord wants us to

serve Him by talking about the difference between being ‘idle’ and ‘labor[ing] with [our] might.’ Perhaps you

could select some household chores and invite family members to demonstrate doing those chores idly and then

with all their might.”

• Show pictures on page 4 below. Use them to talk about he difference between “being idle” and

“laboring with your might.”

• Sing “When We’re Helping We’re Happy”.

• Take turns choosing a chore to pretend to do. If possible, get a potato to represent being idle and some

kind of work/cleaning tool to represent laboring with all your might.

• Whoever chose the chore will hold up either the potato or tool. If they hold up the potato, everyone will

demonstrate doing that chore idly. If they hold up the tool, everyone will pretend to do that chore with

all their might.

• Listen to “When We’re Helping We’re Happy” while pretending to do the chores.

3. Situation Role-Play/Discussion: Discuss/role-play showing how working hard can help with the following

situations (from The Friend):

• Read the Following Stories and talk about the importance of work:

➢ Dieter Uchtdorf story about working hard (on page 5 below).

➢ “Dylan’s Saturday Surprise” story from The Friend about cleaning the church.

June 28-July 4 “

4. Potato/Tool Game (Spiritual Work Version) – What are some types of spiritual work the Lord might want us to

do? (missionary work, defending our belief in Christ, loving others, etc.).

• Listen to/sing “Let Us All Press On” and talk about what the work of the Lord might be/what it includes.

• Follow the potato/tool game directions (from step 2 above), but this time take turns listing things that

are spiritual work.

• Why is it important to do our best when serving the Lord?

5. Bishop Responsibilities Circle Game – Watch “Chapter 17: The First Bishops of the Church” and talk about all the

things bishops do for us currently. How do they work hard to serve the Lord? Share examples of times the

bishop has helped us.

• Sit in a circle. Take turns stating specific things you’ve seen the bishop do or know he’s responsible for

doing. See how many times you can go around the circle without repeating something that’s already

been said.

• This activity sheet from the manual has pictures of many things bishops do.

6. Thanks For Working Hard! Notes – Write thank you notes for the bishop (printable “Thanks for working hard!”

notes are on page 6 below). Give them to the bishop with a note and treats.

• I’m thinking we’ll also use these later on in the week to write a note to the kids and leave it on their

pillows for them with a surprise little treat one day when we notice they’ve been working really hard.

7. Crown Treat – Read D&C 75: 5. What does the Lord promise to crown those with who labor faithfully in His

work? (Honor, glory, immortality, and eternal life). Discuss the meaning of this while making crown cookies by

putting gumdrops around some kind of circular cookie.

Throughout the Week: Do the “Chore Cards” on pages 7-8 below. We’ll probably just do these on one specific day each week.

Scripture Hop (D&C 75:3)

Cut apart the following strips and spread them out far enough in a room so that the kids will need to hop from one strip to another. Make sure to keep them in the correct order. Have them stand by the first one and help them say the top line out loud. Explain what it means. Then have them jump to the next one and do the same thing until they’ve jumped on each of them, said them out loud, and discussed them one at a time. Then have them start back at the beginning and practice saying the phrases from this verse in order while hopping from strip to strip again. Try going a little faster each time. Repeat as many times as wanted/needed. These can also be used as flash cards, taped onto the wall to practice throughout the week, etc.

You should

Go forth and not tarry,

Neither be idle

But labor with

Your might.

Note: The whole verse says, “Behold, I say unto you that it is my will that you should go forth and not tarry, neither be idle but labor with your might.”

WORKING HARD! To this day, I am deeply impressed by the way my family worked after having lost everything

following World War II! I remember my father—a civil servant by education and experience—taking

on several difficult jobs, among which were coal miner, uranium miner, mechanic, and truck driver.

He left early in the morning and often returned late at night in order to support our family. My

mother started a laundry and worked countless hours doing menial labor. She enlisted my sister and

me in her business. With my bike I became the pickup and delivery service. It felt good to be able to

help the family in a small way, and though I did not know it at the time, the physical labor turned out

to be a blessing to my health as well.

It wasn’t easy, but the work kept us from dwelling too much on the difficulties of our circumstances.

Although our situation didn’t change overnight, it did change. That’s the thing about work. If we

simply keep at it—steady and constant—things certainly will improve.

How I admire men, women, and children who know how to work!

(From Dieter F. Uchtdorf’s “Two Principles for Any Economy”)

• How do we feel when we know we’ve done our best?

• Which pictures represent work done by people in this story?

• How did Elder Uchtdorf work hard to help his family?
