An Important Message for Parents
We are approaching the time of year when parents are wondering about when the Parish Sacramental Program is starting for their children to complete their Initiation into the Church, which they began with having their children baptized. Already we have had a number of parents enquiring as to when they can enrol their children for First Reconciliation, as that has been the first step in that process until recent years.
However, there has been a somewhat radical change in policy and
practice in the Archdiocese, which means that the first Sacrament received after Baptism will NOT be
Reconciliation, but will be CONFIRMATION. In many ways, this is quite appropriate as it is somewhat
strange to expect a person to be reconciled with the Church, before they are fully initiated into the Church!
There is an interesting anomaly in the Baptism of Infants. While nobody would want to deny the right of
infants and children to be members of the Church (after all, a community without children would be an unreal
community!), on the other hand nobody can be forced to be a member of the Church, even by their parents,
without their consent. For God’s grace is not forced upon us, but always comes as free gift! So there are
always two sides to every Sacrament - God’s offer of the gift, and our acceptance and recognition of the gift.
So my belief that I am receiving the Body of Christ in the Eucharist is essential in genuinely receiving
Communion; my genuine regret for what I have done is essential for receiving the forgiveness of God in
Reconciliation! Two sides to every Sacrament - God’s gift and my acceptance!
Of course, with infant Baptism, the baby is not able to personally accept the gift; so the parent does it on
their behalf! But when the child is old enough to speak for itself, it needs to CONFIRM that acceptance of
the gift for itself. Hence the Sacrament of Confirmation! As you are probably aware, when a person is
baptized as an adult, it is unthinkable that they would not receive the Chrism Oil of Confirmation or Laying
on of Hands at the same time. And, it is the same with a child who has the competence to speak for itself.
That is why the 3 Sacraments of Initiation are so intimately linked. They are part of the one process of Initiation - God’s gift is offered, the gift is accepted, and we thereby are welcomed to God’s table.
So, for the past couple of years, the first step to completing your child’s initiation into the Church has
been by asking them to CONFIRM the faith into which you have had them baptized. This will be offered in
the period from July to September, paralleling the third term of the school year. We have already arranged
for the Archbishop’s representative to visit the Parish in early September to receive their CONFIRMATION
and bestow on them the gifts of the Spirit. But prior to that, we will lead them in a process of discernment as
to what they are committing themselves to and their readiness to make that commitment! That will start in
early August and a key element will be a day of Reflection they will share together.

2019 Church Appeal will be held in our parish (and other parishes of the Brisbane West Deanery) on the weekend of 13—14 July.
This year’s Appeal highlights the life-saving work supported by Catholic Mission in Ghana, through programs designed to rescue babies and children who are vulnerable and foster their
personal development for a brighter future.
The parish poster features Sister Stan Therese Mumuni, who runs the Nazareth Home for God’s Children in the Diocese of Yendi in Ghana, with twin boys John and Paul. They have been rescued
by Sister Stan and provided with a safe and loving home.
The 2019 Catholic Mission Church Appeal focuses on the work of the Church in Ghana as they provide ongoing protection and development of children who are vulnerable.

IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY INFO. ARCHDIOCESAN INFORMATION
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday falls this year on Sunday 7 July and is a significant celebration in our Church’s calendar. Whilst providing us with an opportunity to acknowledge our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters, the celebration also signifies that we are united as one in God’s love & care.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics number over 130,000 and are a growing demographic in our Church today. We must continue to reach out & provide opportunities where we may be enriched and nourished by their deep spirituality, culture and love for Jesus Christ, by opening the doors to our hearts and our homes.
In the Gospel of the day Jesus says “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the
harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Just as Jesus did, we must meet people where they are and walk alongside our First Nation’s peoples on their journey to reconciliation and justice.
As Catholics we can set an example for the rest of Australia to follow by coming together as equals and friends in our Schools, Parishes and Organisations in the name of Jesus Christ and in the spirit of mutual respect and unity as one people.

‘OPEN DOOR’. The parishes of St Ignatius and St Thomas’ Anglican Toowong will together start a new initiative to reach out to the wider community, extending an invitation and a hand of friendship. ANNUAL PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
Last year Archbishop Mark Coleridge announced the Archdiocese of Brisbane will take up the Peter’s Pence collection on the first Sunday after the
Feast of Sts Peter and Paul. This year it will be held next weekend (6 / 7 July).
The ‘Peter’s Pence Collection’ will be a retiring collection (at all Masses).
This collection gives Catholics in Australia an opportunity to join in communion with the Catholic faith throughout the world in support of the charitable works
of the Holy See.

Vocations Brisbane. Each year we hold a Novena for Vocation (V9) with the catalyst being at the Feast
of Pentecost. This year we are introducing a new prayer for Vocation within the Archdiocese, beginning last weekend on Pentecost Sunday. We hope that this will be a unique and encouraging way for the Catholic Community of Brisbane to come together under the
same prayer and enable us all to continue to pray for Vocations.
This campaign has the endorsement of Archbishop Mark Coleridge.
