Welcome to Grace Lutheran Church! We give thanks that our gracious Lord Jesus Christ has gathered us together here for his Divine Service. Today again our Lord comes to serve us and lavish us with his gifts of life, forgiveness, and salvation. Rejoicing in those wonderful gifts, we sing with David in Psalm 84: “How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! A day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.”

In our readings today: Following the flood, Noah’s descendants failed to spread out and fill the earth as God had spoken. Rather, they exalted themselves; with “one language and the same words” (Gen. 11:1), they spoke proudly and arrogantly. The Lord humbled them by confusing “the language of all the earth,” dividing and dispersing the people (Gen. 11:9). That dispersal was reversed on Pentecost Day (the 50th day of Easter), when God caused the one Gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ, to be preached in a multitude of languages. “At this sound the multitude came together” (Acts 2:6), for the preaching of Christ is the primary work of the Holy Spirit, whereby He gathers people from all nations into one Church. The Holy Spirit teaches and brings to our remembrance the words of Jesus, which are the words of the Father who sent Him. These words bestow forgiveness and peace to those who keep and hold on to them in love for Jesus. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27).

Requests, please give written requests to be included during our “Prayers of the Church” to an usher or an elder before worship service.

Hearing, Ask an usher for one of the wireless hearing assistance units.

Holy Communion is a sacred gift from Christ to His Church. In this meal, He gives His true body and blood under bread and wine into our mouths in order to forgive our sins and strengthen our union with Him and with one another (Matthew 26:26-28; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17). Christians receive this Sacrament trusting Jesus’ own words, repenting of all their sin, and confessing the faith taught in Holy Scripture together in unity (Matthew 5:23-24; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 11:17-26). For this reason, and because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm (1 Corinthians 11:27-34), we ask that those who have not yet been instructed and those who are not members of a congregation in fellowship with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to speak with the pastor before receiving Holy Communion.

Attendance Registration, cards are located in the Hymnal racks of each pew. We ask all members

and our guests to complete one and pass it to the center aisles. An usher will collect them after the offering is taken to the altar. The cards are important as they enable our secretary to track members’ attendance as well as guests interested in joining our church. Thank you for your help.

A Prayer Before Worship O Lord, our creator, redeemer, and comforter, as we come together to worship You in spirit and in truth, we humbly pray that You would open our hearts to the preaching of Your Word so that we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus Christ as our only Savior, and grow in grace and holiness. Hear us for His sake. Amen

Confession: (We cannot come into the presence of our holy God on our own. We recognize our sinfulness and plead for mercy on account of Christ.)

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins

and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We

have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Absolution: (God speaks His words of forgiveness to us through His servant, the pastor.)

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Service of the Word Introit: (Forgiven by God, He invites us into his presence as we speak words from the Psalms.) Ps. 104:24, 27–28, 30; antiphon: Liturgical Text

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

These all look to you, to give them their food in due season.

When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

Collect: (Many of these prayers have been used in the church for over 1,500 years. They “collect” the Gospel theme for the day.)

P Let us pray. O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Children’s Message

Scripture Readings: (Jesus speaks to us in His Word as our crucified and risen Savior.) Old Testament Reading Genesis 11:1–9

P Today’s Old Testament Reading is from Genesis, the eleventh chapter

1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.

2And as people migrated

from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3And they said to

one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.

4Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city

and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

5And the LORD came down to see the city

and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6And the LORD said, “Behold, they are

one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.

7Come, let

us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

8So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth,

and they left off building the city. 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there

the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Gradual: (The Gradual is a portion of a psalm or other Scripture passage that responds to the Old Testament reading and transitions us toward the words of Jesus in the Gospel.) Acts 2:17b; Rom. 10:10

I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.

With the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Epistle Acts 2:1–21

P Today’s Epistle reading is from Acts, the second chapter.

1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.

2And suddenly

there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

3And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on

Page 8: June 9th, 2019 The Day of Pentecost€¦ · 09.06.2019  · Pastor Timothy Appel. 1 Welcome to Grace Lutheran Church! We give thanks that our gracious Lord Jesus Christ has gathered

7

each one of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in

other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under

heaven. 6And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered,

because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7And they were amazed

and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it

that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9Parthians and Medes and Elamites

and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11

both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

12And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one

another, “What does this mean?” 13

But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

14But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of

Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15

For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16

But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17

“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams; 18

even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

19And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below,

blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20

the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood,

before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21

And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel John 14:23–31

P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fourteenth chapter.

23

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

24Whoever does not love

me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

25“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.

26But the Helper, the Holy

Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give

to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

28You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If

you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

29And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does

take place you may believe. 30

I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me,

31but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that

the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Creed: (God works faith in us by His Word that we hear in Scripture. We confess that faith using one of three creeds that the church has used throughout the years and across the world.) Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of the Day: (This hymn especially relates to the Gospel theme for the day. Each hymn provides a way for us to hear God’s Word set to music.)

Come, Holy Spirit, Lord and Comforter sung to tune:LSB 637

1 Come, Holy Spirit, Lord and Comforter, With words of truth our feeble faith assure, That we are children of the God who gave His only Son to death, from death to save.

4 Come, holy Fire, and kindle what is true, Work in us the desire Your will to do; By You alone can we our “Abba” say; Groan in us when we know not how to pray.

2 Grant to us faith that trusts alone in Him, Whose blood has paid the wages of our sin; Declare to us that what is Christ’s is ours, And drown each day our flesh with all its wars.

5 Speak, grow the seed with water You provide That flowed with blood from Christ our Savior’s side; Let patience grow with peace and love and joy— A holy harvest death cannot destroy.

3 All lies, all sin, the darkness in our hearts, Dispel with light Your holy Word imparts; Turn us to Him whose blood for sin was split, Who rose to prove He paid for all our guilt.

6 Life’s Giver, teach us to expect that Day When tears are dried and sorrow flees away, When You will gather all Your Church to see The glory of the Holy Trinity!

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who ascended above the heavens and, sitting at Your right hand, poured out on this day the promised Holy Spirit on His chosen disciples. For all this the whole earth rejoices with exceeding joy. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus: (Latin for “holy.” The division between heaven and earth is gone, and we cry out to God with the heavenly host, “Holy, Holy, Holy!” to welcome our Savior Jesus (Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9).) LSB 161

Prayer of Thanksgiving: (We thank God for His gift of His incarnate Son Jesus and ask Him to give what He has promised in the Sacrament.) LSB 161

P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

Lord’s Prayer: (We pray the words that Jesus gave us to pray, trusting that our Father will hear and answer us.) LSB 162

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Words of Our Lord: (We hear Jesus’ words that in the Sacrament He gives us His very body and blood in, with, and under the bread and the wine.) LSB 162

P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini: (Latin for “The peace of the Lord.” The pastor holds the body and blood of Jesus before the congregation and speaks the Lord’s peace as the very Gospel.) LSB 163

Agnus Dei: (Latin for “Lamb of God.” As John the Baptist cried (John 1:29), so we sing to Christ, our Lamb who was sacrificed for our sins.) LSB 163

SUNDAY SCHOOL Today in Sunday School, we study the account “Jesus Walks on Water.” Jesus was gracious to

Peter when he feared drowning. Jesus is gracious to us and is ready to catch us as we sink in sin and unbelief; His hand is always strong to save us. Consider asking, “How did Jesus rescue

Peter? How does Jesus rescue us?”
