To All District Deputies, Exalted Rulers, Officers and Members:

Soon a quarter of the 2009-2010 Lodge year will be behind us and the question is, are you and your Lodge ahead, behind or on schedule for a successful year. As I mentioned last month, now is the time to assess where you are and make any adjustments. If you haven’t done that yet, don’t wait any longer! Do it now to ensure that everything is being done to offer our programs to your community, as well as achieving growth and operational stability in your Lodge.

June is busy with many State Conventions, with everyone getting ready for the National Convention in Portland, and, of course, every Lodge conducting the mandatory Flag Day Celebration and hopefully a Father’s Day tribute.

Flag Day and Father’s Day are perfect for involving the community in what your

Lodge does as a patriotic and community-oriented organization. It is the perfect time to show your interest and devotion to your community, country and family. Seize these opportunities to build a stronger relationship with your community and Members.

Your Lodge remains in a unique position to help your community, as well as your own membership. Lodges generally are well established and staffed with caring Elks. They are perfectly positioned to be of great support to their communities and Members.

This is particularly true with today’s uncertainty we are experiencing nationwide.

Reach out to your membership and community and determine what your Lodge can do to help. You certainly can continue to provide economical social opportunities for your Members, as well as a friendly facility to gather for support, discussion and possible examination of opportunities. Show your membership your concern for their well being and your Lodge’s willingness to be there for them.

Do the same thing for your community and use your membership to help. Make your facilities and the expertise of your membership available to your community. Reach out and make your Lodge a leader in community support. Be a rallying point for your Members and community.

Thank you for your continuing efforts to Grow Elkdom and make our Order shine during these difficult times.

On the 100th anniversary of the Continental Congress in June 1877, the Stars and Stripes was adopted as our official flag. With great enthusiasm, many American citizens desired to participate in waving our flag.

Not until 1916 did President Woodrow Wilson proclaim Flag Day as a national celebration; however, it was not officially recognized until 1949 by President Harry Truman. George Washington once said of our original flag, “We take the stars from heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and white stripes shall go down to posterity representing liberty.”

Every day when our flag is viewed, we must think of what our forefathers had to

Our potential Members use text messages, email, visit Facebook and Twitter and do not use the more traditional methods to communicate or investigate ideas or potential interests.

We as an Order need to

embrace these new forms of communication and review whether or not some of our traditional methods need to be minimized. If we wait too long we may end up like the dinosaurs in the museum — once mighty and powerful, now extinct.

endure for us as American citizens to enjoy this privilege. Please, as our “great flag” passes, salute it and thank God that we live in one great country. We must continue to remind our elected officials of the importance of outlawing the desecration of our flag.

We will also celebrate our country’s birthday on July 4. Let us look back to the original Independence Day. What courage it took to tell Great Britain that we had enough of their taxation and that we were going to govern ourselves. It took many great individuals and especially, Thomas Jefferson, to compose what is now our Declaration of Independence. It is our country’s assurance of independence and commitment to certain inalienable rights.

Just a reminder, if you are attending the Grand Lodge Convention, stop by our Americanism booth and say “hello.” We can answer your questions and you may get some ideas on how to further our programs in your state and Lodges.

God bless the Elks, God bless our soldiers and God bless America.

Flag bearers needed — Committee Chairman Richard M. Palanzo is looking for three 2009-10 Exalted Rulers, one veteran each of the Air Force, Merchant Marines and Coast Guard, to carry the flag of their respective branch of service, in the Parade of Flags at the opening of the Grand Lodge Session in Portland on Sunday, July 5. They would be asked to wear their military uniforms. First come, first selected. Palanzo may be emailed for information at [email protected]

Educate your legislatorsabout our Elks programs

by dwayne e. ruMney, PgerPast Chairman

Elks have a great heritage of service to our community and our fellowman. We have humbly worked to make our communities a better place to live, provide programs and scholarships for our youth and enhance the level of comfort for our nation’s Veterans.

This is especially true as it relates to the committees that care for many deserving Veterans. Spending quality time visiting Veterans is probably one of the most important things that we Elks can do to fulfill our motto: “So Long As There Are Veterans, The Benevolent And Protective Order Of Elks Will Never Forget Them”. Playing cards for Veterans is a program that goes hand in hand with our motto.

The Playing Cards for Veterans program provides playing cards, at no cost to Veterans. Card games are a great method of providing social interaction, mental stimulation and improved dexterity.

Tom Jamison began this program

10 years ago. Tom gathers nearly new decks of cards from riverboats and casinos, which generously donate them to our cause. Elk volunteers make sure that each deck is in immaculate condition and sealed. They also place a sticker with the

Elks National Veterans Service Commission logo on each pack. Over 40,000 decks were distributed last year alone!

The Playing Cards for Veterans Program is an easy way to get your Lodge involved

in helping our nation’s heroes. If your Lodge is planning an event for Veterans, you could make a deck of cards part of a gift package. Playing cards in continuous use have a short lifespan, so give decks of cards to our Veterans often, letting them know that “ Care – Share.”

It’s easy to get free playing cards for our Veterans. Send your request to:

Exalted Rulers and State Presidents, have you selected a Government Relations Chairman yet? Hopefully all of you have made a good choice for your Government Relations Committee. That appointment may be one of the most important you have to make, not only for your Lodge, but for every Lodge in your State. You need a Member who is active and can communicate to your Lodge Members, but more importantly, to your local officials and state legislators.

For example, in my home state of Oregon the Government Relations Committee staged a legislative day at the state capital in Salem. The legislature was in session and it gave the Elks a great opportunity to tell our story. Fourteen Lodges were present with table displays, and Members were charged with meeting their legislators. Several charities, such as Elks Children’s Eye Clinic, Hoop Shoot, Public Relations, Meadowood Speech Camp, were displayed. The Drug Awareness trailer was parked in front of the capitol building.

At the end of the day all legislators and staffs were invited to a party. A member of the House of Representatives, who is also an Elk, announced on the House floor that root beer floats were being served by the Elks. The Speaker of the House and Senate President, along with several Representatives, Senators and staff members, took part and had a great time. This was all organized by the Oregon State Elks Association Government Relations Chair, who wanted to ensure that legislators were educated about the Elks and that the Elks were educated about their government. This is just one example of what your Government Relations Committee
