THE POTENTATE’SMES S AGE

The week prior to the Ceremonial of the Carolinas was vacation for Judy & I. Three days in Myrtle Beach was a needed getaway. The Oa-sis Camping Club had members in Myrtle Beach all week, so we enjoyed the company and com-panionship of close friends (and my phone)! The job of Potentate has weighed on me this month. Judy & I, or Danny & I, or Terry & I have been on the road more days than any month this year. Pulling into Walnut Cove at midnight has been the norm. I never stopped to think about the huge geographic coverage our of our Temple. The Desert Dust has become the medium of choice in getting the word to our membership. Edi-tor Richard Ivey has been tireless in making it a better product. The May issue had 32 pages and we spent almost $900.00 less than we did in the days of black & white. Richard also has been proactive in selling paying ads. My estimate is that we will show a savings of almost $20,000.00 this year between printing savings and ad sales. While on the subject of printing, the Paper Cru-sade newspapers were also a project for which Richard took charge. For the first time we had a full color paper... And guess what? It costs about $500.00 less to print the same number as last year’s black & white. While I’m passing out Attaboys, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Oasis web site, Oasisshriners.org. Chad Andrews, winemaker, computer engineer and all around good guy has completely redone the site. If you haven’t seen it, this is your opportunity to see an amazing compilation of information about Oasis, our Hospitals, links to our appendant bodies, ac-cess to the Desert Dust on line, applications to download and print, and more! Also, thanks to Chad, our office computers are also safe now. Seems that we had “visitors in the night” back in February who had keys to our office and alarm passcodes. They hacked into our hospi-tal and membership systems. Chad spent many hours of his own time rebuilding the system and protecting it from further problems. The Oasis office is becoming a well oiled machine. Jan Garmon, our Office Manager, is

a paid member of our team who gives 110% all the time. Jan added Lori Prockup as our in-house- accountant and she has proven to be a true asset. Be sure and thank our staff for their professional efforts. There are an amazing number of individu-als that work tirelessly in the background, and most for no pay. George Wilcox, our financial

wizard has become the go-to man. Besides being our Master of Cer-emonies, George is always ready to go above and beyond any request to not only make something happen, but to make it happen right and at a cost savings! In the past six months George has found savings in our insurance plans that easily total over $15,000, and with better overall coverage for Oasis. All the savings I mentioned are very important this year because of a need for legal advice. To protect our Temple I have authorized monies to

lawyers in order to prepare Oasis better against legal action. And the Board of Directors agreed to have our Employee Handbook re-written to bring it up to today’s standards. The church that is renting the Temple, and has a contract to purchase, appears to be feeling the economic pinch that we all feel. They have requested, and been granted, a reduction in rent through December this year. Good news was delivered to the Stated meeting in Myrtle Beach during our Five Tem-ple Ceremonial. Captain of the Guard Rodney Morgan reported that our Shrine Circus ticket sales were breaking records. Rodney has rid-den herd on the circus for three years and does a great job. The Five Temple Ceremonial (officially the Ceremonial of the Carolinas) made history in May. Five of the Carolina’s Shrine temples were together for a three day weekend. A story on the celebration is in this issue. Over 3,000 Shriners and their Ladies attended the celebra-tion. This surpasses SASA in attendance and the parade was one of the best I have ever seen. Thanks to everyone for making this happen. I was moved as I presented the Class hon-oree awards. Two of the finest men I know were

Everyone is welcome!

I called Noble Rocky Sneed, President of the Crowders Mountain Shrine Club, to get directions to the American Legion where Crowders Mountain Shrine club meets. “Well we don’t actually meet at the Ameri-can Legion. Just before you get here you’ll see a gate and chain link fence at the ball field. Turn there and come all the way down to the club.” I followed Rocky’s directions (my GPS had long ago given up) and arrived at a neat rustic building with a shooting range built in. I knew I was going to like these guys! Before the actual meeting began I roamed around and had small talk with some of the members. I quick-ly learned that this was a club that took care of the neighborhood. The firing range was actually used for a Turkey Shoot where the members

emonial, they also raised nearly $25,000 for Shriners Hospitals. Besides that, they raised another $15,000 or so for other projects, but not as the Crowders Mountain Shrine Club. It has taken me a lot of years to make it to this club, and I am really sorry that I had not been be-fore. This is a great, hard working bunch of guys, and I had a blast meeting with them. And, as some of you may know, good food and good cooks are something I know a bit about...these guys have both! To the men at Crowders Mountain Shrine Club, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You make me proud to know you.

Now before you go to your phone and call to let me know that our clubs are supposed to raise money for our Hospitals, just hold your horses. This group of Shriners is also acting sometimes as American Legion Members, sometimes as Blue Lodge Masons and sometimes as, well, Shri-ners. The club not only brought 15 new members to the 2010 Fall Cer-

How diffi cult can that be? Interesting question from, shall we say, an inspired read-er and let’s leave it at that. While growing up my mother used to tell me; “Son, if you can’t say something nice, you’re better off not saying anything;” while

on the other hand my father regularly said, “Son, shoot ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out.” For a 8 year old that’s a little hard to get your arms around, but with 50 years to let those concepts develop, you can see the underlining message is pretty solid. One, keep it to your-

self; and two, reveal the truth when there’s an issue. If your article is missing or you can’t fi nd the photographs you sent to the editor, guess what, there is a reason. From day one during orientation on January 29th of this year, all the Clubs and

Units were given print-ed and verbal instruc-tions on how to submit articles and photos for publication in the Des-ert Dust. These were NOT my basic rules, but those of the Print-er...meaning, I was just the messenger. Well, only about 40% of the articles & photos came

House Cleaning 101From the Editor’s Desk

We have approxi-mately 100 combined Clubs and Units and with every email I re-ceive, there is on aver-age at least 4 additional ones generated trying to get additional infor-mation. For every pho-to you see in the DD, there are 10 times more that I weed through to end up with good ones. With each ad you see, there are just as many emails, plus 5 or 6

phone calls to get veri-fi cation and then all this has to be relayed to our accounting department with correct billing in-formation. For some unknown reason, this wasn’t done in the past and thousands of dol-lars went uncollected. The written guide-lines have always stat-ed articles “Must be a Word Document.” We’ve gotten hand written directions as to

ones request that look like Egyptian hiero-glyphics. If I can’t read it, I can’t type it. Nev-ertheless, the Desert Dust has transformed into something truly different and you can thank your Potentate for that. Last weekend while visiting a Sudan event, Illustrious Sir, John Sullivan learned that the entire Sudan Divan goes online and reads our Desert Dust.

How awesome is that? What does all this mean? If you want your article and or photo-graphs to appear in the Desert Dust, then we all have to abide by the same guidelines. Therefore, there can’t be ANY exceptions.1. MUST be submit-ted by the 5th of the month.2. Photo MUST be submitted in a large format/fi le size.

in correctly. I’ve tried to accommodate everyone and offer suggestions to help, only to meet with some resistance. I stated then, and still holds true today, I am here to help every-one within the length of my “Cable-tow.” Now, I’m not complaining, because I really enjoy

what the Desert Dust has become, but I don’t think anyone has any idea what it takes to put this together to the quality it has become...well except my wife, Tracee. Below is an exam-ple of how we can help you.

3. Articles MUST be a Word Document...NOT in the body of an email. Just 3 simple rules are all it takes. Remem-ber your Desert Dust is a newspaper, not a newsletter for your club or unit. Use it, but use it wisely. If I had to guess, within our over 6,500 members there are only a hand-ful with any experience in laying out an ad. We

have contracted with a graphic artist and she is outstanding. She will create fl yers, ads, bro-chures all for the low price of $45 and they will be done right. If you’re interested, send me an email and I will introduce you. If you have a question, call us. Attitude is the motivation of accom-plishment...good or bad, Attitude is the driving force.

No GREATER Love Meet Noah Nicholas Robbins; grandson to newly installed Noble, Keith Moynihan and Lady Brenda of Charlotte. Not much needs to be said that the photograph doesn’t convey. The tears of love have left their mark on Keith’s pants as he celebrates something so profound only he knows how it feels. To have his grandson; a recipient of Shriners devotion to the betterment of children in need, stand there on one leg provided by Shriners Hospital for Children and participate in crowning of his Fez.

For me this is one of those rare moments I hate I missed, but thanks to the devotion of both Noble Fred Barkley Captain of the Photography Unit and Noble Lee Abernathy I was able to expe-rience the love Keith has for such an outstanding child. One day, Noah will be able to grasp how Blessed he is to have Keith & Brenda Moynihan as grandparents. Brethren, it just doesn’t get much better than this. If you don’t believe me, read; “What it means for me to be a Shriner.”

What it means for me to be a Shriner On August 7, 2008, the first grandson in our family, Noah Nicholas Robbins was born. As our family watched the doc-tor perform the normal exams and checks of a newborn, it became clear that something was wrong with Noah’s left leg. After the exam, the doctor de-livered the crushing news, that there was a problem with Noah’s leg. At that time, our daughter and our son-in-law were liv-ing in Augusta, Georgia, and by the Grace of God

they were referred to an orthopedic pediatric specialist who just hap-pened to be involved with the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC. His ex-amination revealed the problem was that Noah was missing a bone in his left leg from the knee to the ankle. Once he re-viewed all the medical records, notes and X-rays accumulated to that point he prepared a submission for Noah to be treated at the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, where Noah

was accepted. On our first visit to the Greenville Hospital, we met with the doctors and then given a tour of the hospital. The doctor’s very diplomatically dis-cussed the options. There were only two: leg length-ening or, amputation be-low the knee. Not an easy decision. However, the doctors were very knowledgeable, compassionate and under-standing. They informed us that the leg lengthening process would take sever-

al years and there was no guarantee it would work. It would be pain-ful, and ampu-tation might become neces-sary anyway. At that point Noah would be in his teens, which would probably be devastating to him. Before we left the hos-pital, we toured the prosthetics department and I was thinking about how un-fair this was, our grandson, so young having to go through this. I

was walking, teary-eyed, in front of everyone else, when I turned the corner and saw something that I will never forget. Sitting at the Tiger Woods video golf game in the lobby of the hospital, was a young boy about 7 or 8 years old. He was laughing and having a great time play-ing the game. As I looked closer, I notice he had no legs from just below his hips. It was like being hit in the head with a 2 x 4. Standing there, I real-ized two things. One, this isn’t so bad, we can get through this as a strong family; and two, we were at the right place for No-ah’s treatment. The decision to am-putate his foot would come in a few months after much research by Noah’s parents and many prayers. Noah now has his third prosthetic leg af-ter two surgeries. He is a Carolina Panther fan and his prosthetic legs have the team logos and em-blems. When he wakes in the morning and he wants his leg on, he simply tells his mom “kitties, kitties.” While Noah was in his first surgery, I was walking the hospital and came upon an open of-

fice door. Inside the office was a poster of the “Justin Timberlake Shriners Hos-pital for Children Open”. I knew that was some-thing my wife and I had to get involved in. This year will be our third year as volunteers. We have met so many Shriners from all across the country, and last year my wife met the Im-perial Potentate. It is quite a nice feeling to know that we are part of this tourna-ment, and in the Shriners family. There are more surgeries ahead, but it is

comforting to know who we are associated with; the Shriners. The reason I wanted to become a Shriners is simple; there are many Shriners that I have not met and may never meet, that have helped and con-tinue to help my grand-son......it is now my turn to help as many kids that I can, whom I may never meet.

At the first ever Ceremonial of the Carolinas I named two class honorees. These Nobles were cho-sen for this event because I wanted to make a state-ment. These two Nobles and their Lady’s are among the best Oasis has in its ranks. Sam McCall works in the background, not lead-ing the dance line, not being loud, but simply being a good guy. better, and all the while he is looking in from afar. A founder of Victory Junction Gang, the benefactor of four major col-lege scholarships, Sam is a veteran of the U. S. Army. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet Sam and his Lady, Priscilla, make time to do so. To Sam, thanks for all you do. The second class honoree is Lloyd “Cuz” Golding. You think you have done something because you have been unit captain or club president? Think again...Cuz has been president of five clubs, from Palm Beach, FL to Greensboro. He was made a Shriner in 1954. He has worked for banks, airlines and most recently as a lobbyist for the NFL. I tried to call Cuz a couple of weeks ago and was put into voice mail. Seems Cuz and Cathy were at the Kentucky Derby. And if you know Cuz, the pa-parazzi were taking pictures of his outfit rather than

the Southern Belles surrounding him. Cuz always has a good word, an assuring smile, and an easy-going approach to life. To both these men, I am humbled to be in your presence. Keep on doing what you do. You make the world a better place.

D&B...We Did It Our Way Ask Drum and Bugle Corps’ Captain, Noble Tommy Helms about his choice for having a car show in a small town like Mount Holly, North Caro-lina and you might be sur-prised with his answer. Ac-tually, the entire D&B Unit might surprise you as they all seem to be in one ac-cord, even the ladies. They do things as they agree to during monthly meet-ings...or quote the legend-ary singer Frank Sinatra; “ They did it their way.” Things turned south for D & B when their sched-uled date found its self right

in the middle of this areas worst thunderstorms in years. Flyers had to be re-printed, car owners had to be notified, and all the food had to be packed in freez-ers, since Mother Nature failed to cooperate and they had no rain date. Neverthe-less, this didn’t dampen their spirits as they just used it as an excuse to have fel-lowship over breakfast. Captain Helms pulled his group together, came up with another date that allowed them to piggy-back on the Mount Holly Spring Fes-tival on Saturday, May 7. Tommy, District Manager for Airgas National Welders in Char-lotte, was able to have his company donate a used truck that needed some minor repairs and once completed, got detailed and became one of the hundred or so items that were put up for a silent auction. They had all kinds of unique items, die cast replicas of vintage cars & trucks, office furniture, Apple iPods, welding sup-plies, car care products, tools, and a 50/50 drawing just to name a few. The one funny look character holding his Apple iPod Touch, that looks like he just swallowed a salt & peppered Gastropod...

that’s long for “Slug,” is D&B honorary member and 2007 Past Potentate, Illustrious Gary Taylor. Taylor, no stranger to D&B events, was designated DJ for the day. After checking, re-checking, and checking again all the plugs to the PA system, franticly trying to get the system working, learned a valuable lesson from a 11 year old kid walking by when he asked; “Hey mister, did you check

the power?” Ouch...that’s gotta sting! The ev-ent a huge

success, as the field was crowded with classic cars & trucks, a steam pro-pelled car, and a brown-not-complete-want-a-be something-one-day-car...I think? Captain Helms re-ported that D&B raised ap-proximately $7,000 for the Shriners Hospital for Chil-dren. Great work for a one day event...watch out Shri-ners...the Drum and Bugle Corps is doing things their way.

Gator Patrol Leader David Bowman remind-ed us that it has been a while since we have told our stories for the Des-sert Dust...so here goes with what has happened this spring so far. March 2nd brought the Gators back together at the Harbor Inn Oys-ter Bar for our monthly

business meeting. Fred and Judy Medlin hosted a fish fry at their “plan-tation” on Wednesday, April 6th for the Gators and Gals. Five of our Gator group camped at Hungry Mother Camp-ground on Thursday – Sunday, April 7th – 10th...and enjoyed the fellowship and cooking

expertise of the Gators and Gals and experi-enced the “scare” of camping beside a creek that was rising and tornado warnings be-ing issued. April 24th one of our sweet Ga-tor friends Rupert and Ann Little celebrated their 50th anniversary...Congratulations to Ann

Gator Talesand Rupert!!!May 4th brought the Gators and Gals to the new Hickory restaurant/diner the PO-BBQ owned and oper-ated by four Masons/ Shriner’ buddies. Re-minders were given to all who could help about the Shrine Paper Sale on Friday and Saturday, May 6th and 7th. Many of our group headed to Myrtle Beach on Thurs-day May 12th through Sunday May 15th to par-ticipate in the Shriner’s parade and convention held there. Friday was spent having fun at the pool, and enjoying the “Gator Whiz.” The pa-rade stepped off at 6:00 pm on Friday night , and we loved the night-time parade. After the parade, we walked up the street to River City Bar & Grill and then gathered back at the motel for more fun and entertainment by Doug Harrington and his card tricks. Saturday, some

of the group went to the Little River for the Blue Crab festival...and gen-erally we just had a blast enjoying our friends in the Gator Patrol. Sev-eral of our group could not attend due to death’s in their family: Larry and Brenda Huffman (Larry’s father died on Monday) and Vickie’ Jarrett’s sister-on-law

had passed away. June 1st the Gators will head to Tex’s Fish Camp in Hildebran, NC for a a dinner/business meet-ing. More about the events at the Red Fez Family day coming up on Friday June 3rd – Sunday, June 5th... And that’s the way it was....See ya’ later, GATORS!!!

to get out before mid-night! Please congratu-late both of these fi ne men and their ladies. Again, we see what is right in Shrinedom. Memorial Day Will have passed by the time you read this, as well as Family Fun Day. Plans for the Imperial Ses-sion in Denver, Colora-do are being made. Our

Imperial representa-tives have hard choices to make this year. Pray that they will have have the foresight to do the right thing for our hos-pitals and fraternity. God bless the Shrine and God Bless America.

I toured some of the areas where our Shri-ners were holding the Paper Crusade. It was then I realized what a wonderful cross section of America the Shrine represents. At the Mocksville Walmart the Hospital Trailer was on display. I noticed the young man in the door passing out papers was Michael Wentz. Michael became a Shriner at 18 and joined the Navy at about the same time. I spoke to him and asked if he had been discharged. “No Sir, but I have a four day leave and learned that this was Paper Cru-sade weekend, so I was lucky enough to be able to help out the club.” OK, pinch me at this point. We have a twenty-three year old sailor with a four day leave and he comes home to volunteer as a Shriner. Sometimes it just feels good to find these wonderful stories, but this is just the be-ginning... I drove over to Mt Airy and spent some

age. In between I saw Ray Chandler who is taking the time to bring the Hospital trailer dis-play to Myrtle Beach, and Neal Johnson, who, besides being a member of the Oasis Camping Club, is in charge of the kitchen at the Winston-Salem Shrine Club and just happens to be the father of Noble Troy Johnson, club Presi-dent. NOTE: I wrote this before the Ceremo-nial of the Carolinas in Myrtle Beach, South

Carolina. While there a lady from another Temple collapsed in the

hotel. Ray Chandler just happened to be close by with his Dad, Chief

Aide Danny Chandler. Danny made the call to 911 and Ray began re-suscitating the patient. The Horry County res-cue squad and a doc-tor who had examined candidates were both on hand, but they stood by as Ray did what he was trained to do...he is a certified EMT through the fire department near his home. Ray stabilized his patient, helped load her into the ambulance and finished by packing up the local rescue squad equipment. The lady, I was told, would have a short stay in the hospi-tal, but would survive. Way to go Ray! Heroes walk among us... The Shrine truly has a place for every-one.

time with some of the Surry County members. As I walked to another entry I saw a Noble I didn’t recognize. Turns out it was George Phelps, who has retired in warmer climes than in Albany, NY where he previously lived. George was raised in his Blue Lodge in 1965 (46 years ago) and a few years later became a Shriner. Now I’m no spring chicken, but I was in the 10th grade in 1965, so I asked George how old he was. Turns out that George is, by the time you read this, look-ing forward to his 85th birth-day. So in one day I saw a young man who serves both his coun-try and his F r a t e r n i t y , and an “old-er” man who refuses to be told he cannot do something because of his

Oasis Welcomes the Following New Nobles

Brethren, welcome to Oasis, the largest contribu-tor to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. We currently aren’t the largest Shrine Center, but year after year Oasis is known as the lead-er to follow. You will soon begin getting information from Clubs & Units, and I strongly suggest you visit those close to you as soon as possible. In the packet you received at the Ceremo-nial, there is an Oasis direc-tory labeled 2011 Contacts & Calendar. Check it out, as there is some valuable information in it. You are about to meet some of the finest men and their ladies you will ever come across, and it is my honor to give you some information that will help you along the way.1. If you meet the Poten-tate you address him as; Il-lustrious Sir

2. When you meet a Past Potentate and it will be not-ed on his Fez as; Past Po-tentate, you address him as Illustrious.3. When visiting any Unit before becoming a member, you always ad-dress its member as Noble or to the group Nobles. If you want to tell a Noble or the group to “Kiss your donkey” you would say; “Nobles kiss my donkey.”4. If you, at some point in time, are appointed or elected to the Divan always remember this! When ac-companying the Potentate you NEVER...NEVER question his authority or put him in a position that would be embarrassing. NEVER! Divan business stays within the Divan meetings unless you are so directed by the Potentate.5. When choosing a Unit to join, I recommend that

you visit several, and mul-tiple times, to get a real understanding of how they work and see if your per-sonality is a good fit. Re-member you can only join 1 Unit, but you can join multiple Clubs.6. Lastly...if you hear any negative comments

from anyone and you aren’t directly involved...Remem-ber this; when people don’t know the facts, they make them up. We call this ru-mors or gossip; and when passed from one to another, they become inflated. Don’t believe everything you hear.

7. If there was one and only one recommendation I could make to you, it is this: visit one of our Hospitals. Call the office and speak with our Hospital Admin-istrator and have them ar-range a visit. It will change your life. You are now about to

embark into what is referred to all over the nation as the “World’s Greatest Philan-thropy.” There is NOTH-ING more rewarding than to have a child look up at you and say, “Thank you.”

“I think it was, or maybe it just looked that way since my eyes were closed!” And so goes con-versations with Dis-trict 1 Trustee Howard Keyes. Howard cele-

It turns out that No-ble Howard was made a Nile Temple Shriner while in China. With well over 200

HENDERSONVILLE SHRINE CLUB – PREPARATIONS BEGIN FOR 26TH ANNUAL AUCTION –

For more information, see our website at HendersonvilleShriners.com or call the auction chairman, Matt Alexander, at 828-890-4113

The school is located two miles east of I-26 on US 64 (exit 49, Bat Cave).

The school opens at 8:00 AM for the preview and the auction itself begins at 10:00 AM.

The Hendersonville Shrine Club is preparing once again for its largest fund-raiser of the year: its annual auction. This event involves the work of dozens of Nobles gathering contri-butions of merchandise, gift certifi cates, auto-mobiles and money from over 300 businesses and individuals.

One team of Nobles solicits funds from some of the larger local businesses; one team gathers merchandise and gift certifi cates from shops and stores, and another team requests auto do-nations from local car dealerships. Other No-bles sort, clean, organizes, and label the hun-dreds of items that are collected. Everything is then divided into lots for the auction itself. The cars are repaired and cleaned. In past years we have had trailers, lawnmowers, boats, and ev-erything from electric wheelchairs to antique dishes. There will likely be sports equipment,

furniture, appliances, toys, televisions, bicycles, and computers. Golf packages are a big feature each year along with gift certifi cates for restau-rants, fl orists, car repair, hardware stores, and hotels.

The auctioneer once again will be Richard Hatch of Richard D. Hatch and Associates of Flat Rock, NC. Members haul the merchandise to the auction stage, man the holding room, sell the food, do all of the record-keeping, and clean and repair the cars. The auction will end with the drawing for the TV raffl e.

The Hendersonville Shrine Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and this is its 26th annual auction. This event, along with other fund raisers, makes it possible for the Club to be one of the largest fund raisers in “Shrinedom” each year.

Hard to believe it is May already. Grass is green, leaves are out, flowers are in bloom. A beautiful time of the year. The 5 temple Ceremonial plans are complete for Myrtle Beach May 13th and 14th. This is a first for these 5 Temples. The Patrol Color Guard and Marching Patrol will lead the 5 Temple Pa-rade on Friday night. Captain Daniels has declared May 20th as “Drill-Drill-Drill” night. Following our regular meeting the drill team will begin its practice sessions for our SASA Patrol com-petition in September. June 3rd and 4th will be our Family Fun days at Red Fez Club on Lake Wylie. BBQ, games, swimming are on the menu. Bring the entire family. Our own winning team of Noble Bodenheimer, Gary Taylor and Billy Far-ris will once again have their cook hats on and tongs in hand for deli-cious BBQ. They are the “High on the Hog” team that has won many awards. They have won best Ribs, Chicken and Pork in the Past. This plus their very own “Banana Smore”. Visit their tent while at Fam-ily Fun Day. Imperial session will be in Denver, Co., in July. We have a large delegation that will at-

tend. Past Captain Den-nis Wilson, a resident of Denver, will be there to greet our delegation when they arrive. Sev-eral important items will be voted on by the nobility while in Den-ver. I am sure Noble Dennis can direct you to all the sites in Den-ver. We will break af-ter the Imperial Session for summer vacation and return in Septem-

ber for SASA in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. The Pi-geon Forge Mayor has assured us of a good time while in their city. Many new attractions, shows, and restaurants have been added since we were there last. Make plans now to at-tend. If you are a new Shriner or not now a member of a club or unit , look into becom-ing a member. This is how you will make

many lifelong friends as well as better enjoy our fraternity. Contact any Unit Captain or Club Presi-dent and find out how you can become a member. Keep all our mem-bers that have health is-sues in your prayers. A phone call or a card will do wonders to brighten their day. Have a great summer and a good va-cation.

1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.3He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine en-emies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

About Ear SurgeryWhen considering otoplasty, parents must be confident that they have their child’s best interest at heart. A positive attitude toward the surgery is an important factor, especially when the patient is a child or adolescent. When it comes to otoplasty, conventional wisdom is the earlier the better. The surgery is relatively simple, as the surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. The surgeon removes the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right effect for the patient. The risks are minimal to this surgery. There will be a thin white scar behind the ear after healing. Children are generally seen once prior to surgery by the medical team in Cincinnati. Surgery can be scheduled often within 8-12 weeks after the first appointment. After surgery, patients are seen in 7-10 days with one or two follow-up visits after the first post-op visit.

Ear surgery makes it possible to correct a flaw that can often undermine one’s self-confidence. By changing how you look, this surgery can help change how you feel about yourself.

Arizona does not remember when she started noticing that her ears protrud-ed too much, she just remembers that she never pulled her hair back without wearing a headband and has always been self-conscious about her ears.

“People started to make comments a few years ago,” said her mom, Stepha-nie. “We’ve thought about this surgery for two years. It was a hard decision for us to make. No one wants to think about cosmetic plastic surgery on a young girl.”

Arizona’s family knew a young boy who had the same surgery at Shriners Hos-pitals for Children® – Cincinnati, so in addition to talking with them, Stephanie thoroughly researched her options and got second opinions. “We met with sev-eral doctors in the area, but knew our best option was with Shriners Hospitals for Children®,” said Stephanie.

“Probably no other physical character-istic indicates a need for plastic sur-gery than protruding ears,” said Kevin Yakuboff, MD, FACS, FAAPS, chief of plastics at Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren® – Cincinnati. “Even if the ears are only mildly distorted, protruding ears can lead to self-consciousness and comments from other children.”

Dr. Yakuboff, a team of highly skilled pediatric plastic surgeons, and care co-

ordinators are available to meet with families to discuss successful otoplas-ty surgery. To schedule an appointment or talk with a care coordinator, call the Cincinnati hospital at 513-872-6240 or e-mail at [email protected].
