Memorial Day Weekend, we combined two traditional BYSC Events with one great result; The Beaufort Water Festival and our Club’s Memorial Weekend Picnic. Water Aerobics

All Members Welcome!

We are meeting Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 9:30am to have a good time exercising in our wonderful, salt water pool. We work out to really fun music arranged by Leigh Harmer, with her Technical Assistant, Bruce.

Water Aerobics is low impact, easy on the joints, helps tone and strengthen muscles and improve balance.

You can participate without knowing how to swim. Joining our friendly group of men and women is a great way to get to know other Club members.

If you would like to join us, coat yourself in sunscreen, wear a hat, sunglasses, (rash guard shirt and pool shoes (if you would like), and meet us at the pool with a "fat" pool noodle! It is important to stay hydrated. Bring an unbreakable water bottle. For more information, please contact :Linda Fraser [email protected]

Our spring sailing is almost over with only the Lowcountry Regatta to pull off on June 23-24. It will be a big event with 100 boats, 150 sailors and supporters, three race courses and a big Lowcountry Boil. Bruce Harmer has been gathering the 50 or so volunteers needed to support the water part of the event and we’re preparing for the onslaught. Now is the time to register if you are planning on sailing. Just go to the BYSC website, click on Sailing and go to the big red square. We need you to register so that we show visitors that we have a good contingent of locals planning to sail. Also, our Social Committee needs to have some idea of how many persons to plan for. Thanks to Simon Jenkins (Regatta Chair) and Wayne Bretsch (Principal Race Officer) for exe-cuting a very successful Lightning Class District Championships held in mid May. And to, Marvin Day (Principal Race Officer) for completing an Alberto affected Water Festi-val Regatta. We didn’t think we were destined to complete the regatta after getting literally blown off the water on the first day. Good job to get in three races on Memorial Day.

Last month we were fortunate enough to host the Southeast Regional Lightning Champion-ships. In total,16 boats, crewed by three people were able to come and enjoy the benefits of the Lowcountry and our Club. Over the course of two days we were able to sail enough races to create a Regatta. Despite some very tricky winds, the sailors thoroughly enjoyed their time at the Yacht Club. And we do hope they will come back for some of our other Regattas. They were welcomed in our true BYSC style with copious amounts of food and drink. Our steak nights have become very popular and so we thought it would be nice to share that experience with some out-of-town sailors. All were wonderfully impressed by the excellence of our culinary delivery. It is always a good sight to see a large number of very competitive sailboats taking part in racing on the waters off our Club and for those who were fortunate enough to come and see the racing, they thoroughly enjoyed the vista. It is rare for us to hold Regattas for One Design Classes, so for the sailors in this Club it is a very enjoyable experience and helps grow our Club on the Sailing Map.

Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating

In 2004, a group of members formed the non-profit Junior Sailing of Beaufort to promote junior sailing activi-ties. Positive growth every year took the program from a 2 week learn to sail to a 5 week summer camp with levels from Learn to Sail through a full fledged Race Team and a powerhouse high school sailing team coached by Peter Gamble.

Over the last year, Junior Sailing of Beaufort has expanded our mission to include adult sailing lessons as well as becoming the Beaufort host of the national Spirit of America youth boating education program. With this expanded mission comes a new name and rebranding effort.

Junior Sailing of Beaufort is now Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating.

We operate our traditional Learn to Sail and Race Teams out of BYSC and the Spirit of America program out of the Beaufort YMCA and Port Royal Sound Foundation at Lemon Island. We could not have been in a position to properly take on these new responsibilities without the dedication of our BYSC community to help promote sailing and boating in the Lowcountry.

You have probably recently seen the growth of juniors racing in our Series Events and the Water Festival Regatta. This is the beginning of what you will see as Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating brings that mission to all ages. Our juniors will be representing BYSC at many regattas in the southeast over the summer and fall and BYSC is hosting the new Pluff Mud Championship as a SAYRA Grand Prix Series stop in September.

Our summer Learn to Sail camp starts June 4th and we are poised to have our best summer yet; we’ve added 2 in-structors and 2 extra week long sessions, which are almost full!

We have two more Spirit of America sessions on the schedule in July and August, both of which are full!

Our adult sailing lessons are gaining a big waiting list. Each time we hit 4, our adult instructor will contact the stu-dents to setup a date for the 16 hour class.

We have also been given the US Sailing designation as a 1st Sail location, where those who are interested in getting their feet wet can give it a try for 2 hours. Tauri Duer is planning for a Women’s Sailing session this year.

High School Sailing will gear up again in September with returning upperclassmen and new freshman. And finally, we will be hosting clinics throughout the year for juniors with aspirations to improve their sailing in Opti, Laser, 420 and potentially skiff classes. We are aligning our racers with Olympic classes and bringing in coaches to run clinics through our partnership with Doyle Sailmakers and the Doyle Development Team.

We have obtained some great equipment over the years and it is time to replace some of it as we grow. Your sup-port over the years has been the base for our youth and we appreciate all you have done and will continue to do. As BYSC and JSB members, we should be proud of what we have accomplished in a very short amount of time to grow sailing. The future is very bright for all of the water activities in Beaufort County. Please visit www.beaufortsailing.com to learn more about the new plans for Beaufort Community Sailing & Boat-ing. Follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/beaufortsailing/

Thank you for your support. The Board of Directors Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating

Spirit of America

Spirit of America is looking for volunteers!

What is Spirit of America?

Spirit of America is the premier youth boating education program. It has been operating in Beaufort for the past 5 years as the YMCA boating program, but it has recently been transferred over to Junior Sailing of Beaufort.

The program is an innovative year round opportunity and STEM educational experience for middle school aged students, 11-15 years of age, that combines a summer-camp atmosphere with classroom discipline. Each program participant is exposed to sail, power, paddle, personal watercraft, and large vessel disciplines, rules and practice. In addition, the students spend time in the classroom passing their state boating education course, in the controlled environment of a pool, and in natural settings to build up their confidence and competency.

The program is offered at a very low cost and is supported by grants, sponsorships, volunteers, and donations. Tuition

for the week long program is $50. Families who cannot afford that cost can apply for scholarships to further reduce the cost. The point of this program is to expose ALL children to safe boating and to grow their knowledge and confidence.

What types of volunteers are we looking for? Boaters! Spirit of America volunteers teach the students about boating safely on kayaks, SUPs, canoes, power boats, sailboats, large vessels, and personal watercraft. Instruction is provided in the classroom, pool, and on the water. Sail, paddle, and power volunteers accompany the students and lead them through the waterways surrounding the Port Royal Maritime Center. What do volunteers do?

Adult Sailing Seminars at BYSC

We have had two very successful Adult Sailing Classes in the past month. When we have 4 participants

the Class will meet on Thursday and Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30. Then the Class meets on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 to 4:30.

Check out Signup Genius page here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a4faba92ca2fa7-adult. Select the months that work for you. Get some of your friends to visit the page, too. As soon as four people select the same month, Junior Sailing of Beaufort’s adult instructor will contact you to nail down dates.

All of the Classes are taught aboard the S2, which is a 27-foot keelboat. In the past seminars, participants learned aboard the safe and stable S2 with four students and one instructor.

The instructor is fellow BYSC member Scott Gordon. Scott is a US Sailing Level I Small Boat Instructor. He is also an educator in the public schools with 20 years’ experience. His sailing experience includes racing small boats, keelboats, and coastal cruising. He has taught people sailing from ages 5-70 in the past 20 years.

The cost for this seminar is $275 for members and $325 for non-members. That includes 16 hours of in-struction over four days. Twelve of those hours are on the water. Four of the hours are in the classroom and on the dock.

In the past few weeks, Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating (Junior Sailing of Beaufort) has updated their webpage with a good deal of new information. One of the pages is devoted to the Adult Sailing Pro-gram. Check it out at this address: https://www.beaufortsailing.com/adult-sailing/. Take it a step further and sign up for a class!
