Notes from the Necedah RefugePardon our
messNecedah Na-tional Wildlife Refuge would like to apologize for any inconve-niences our cur-rent construc-tion and upcoming i m p r o v e m e n t s might cause. The refuge currently is constructing a new visitor center, and, during the summer will improve access and parking areas across the refuge. Two of the improve-ment projects will involve Harvey’s Pond and the obser-vation tower area. Refuge staff are grateful for your patience and under-standing while we upgrade these ar-eas. Please obey any
t e m p o r a r y area closures and signage for everyone’s safety. These areas will change fre-quently over the course of
the summer and access will be avail-able each day in as many locations as possible. Please stop at the refuge offi ce or call 608-565-2551 to fi nd out what ac-cess to observation areas, hiking trails and parking areas are available when you plan to visit.
Duck stamp contest
A traveling exhibit with the fi rst- sec-ond- and third-place winners from
the 2010 Wiscon-sin Federal Junior Duck Stamp Con-test are on display until May 28 at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. Viewing of the ex-hibit is located in the refuge offi ce and is free and open to the public 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. This year, 792 stu-dents, from age 6 through high school, entered the contest from 61 schools in Wisconsin. The art was judged in four age classes and the best of show is se-lected from each age groups fi rst place pieces. “There were so many amazingly de-tailed entries from all age groups this
year,” said Daniel Peterson, Wiscon-sin Federal Junior Duck Stamp coor-dinator. “But what is perhaps more in-spiring is the fact that 792 Wisconsin students are learn-
ing important les-sons about the need to conserve wetland habitat through participating in the Junior Duck Stamp Program.”The contest is the culmination of a
year long Junior Duck Stamp conser-vation curriculum used by educators across the nation in their classrooms. Each state hosted competitions from February until mid-
Submitted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service The new Necedah National Wildlife Refuge visitor center currently is under construction, with hopes of opening in the spring of 2011.

April where Junior Duck Stamp design entries were judged by a group of people active in the local wildlife art or con-servation commu-nity. This year’s winner of Wisconsin’s Best of Show in the Fed-eral Junior Duck Stamp contest is 14-year-old Drake Schlosser from Ru-bicon. Schlosser’s acrylic entry of a pair of blue-winged teal competed for the title of best of show in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Contest held April 23 at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul, where he later received an honor-able mention rib-
bon. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge has served as the coor-dinating host site for Wisconsin since 1993. The Wisconsin Waterfowl Associa-tion has sponsored the contest every year since then, not only helping with the contest, but also promoting and con-tributing awards and recognition to the winning artists. Three sets of the winning entries have been repro-duced from origi-nal artwork, mat-ted and framed and incorporated into three identical trav-eling displays that visit more than 20 locations through-out the state. Cur-rently, Horicon and
Trempealeau Na-tional Wildlife Ref-uges are hosting the exhibits for one month before they pass it on to their next host. For a schedule of the traveling display lo-cations, to host the display and or for information and entry forms for the 2010 contest please contact the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge by e-mail at [email protected], by calling 608-565- 2551, or visit online at www.fws.gov/midwest/necedah/juniorduck.html.Steve Norling is a volunteer at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge.

“Forever Ella” is the story of a young girl that went from sec-ond-hand clothes to winning the hearts of the world through the love of a song. Destined to become the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzger-ald refused to let the struggles of her childhood or preju-dice of her country stand in her way. “Forever Ella” is a musical/narrative journey that will feature musical se-lections from the greatest composers of the 20th century. Ella’s incomparable style gave life to the music of Cole Por-ter, Harold Arlen, Rogers and Hart, George and Ira Ger-shwin and many
more. Ella traveled with her music all over the world. Touring in Germany, she forgot the words to Mack the Knife while recording a live album in Ber-lin. Eloquently, as only Ella could do, she blazed her way to a Grammy award that year for the re-cording.Ella made lifelong friends with the thousands of chil-dren whose lives she enhanced through her contributions to charities. She also had interesting friends including Billie Holiday and Marilyn Monroe. To know Ella was to love her. From Harlem to
the world and back, Ella made an im-pact with her child-like joy, classic com-mand of her craft and heart of a gi-ant. “Forever Ella” will give you the introduction to the incredibly strong woman behind the music. Her story is inspiring and her music is magic. Joe & Janice is one of Wisconsin’s hot-test duos. They have more than 35 years each experi-ence entertaining audiences through-out the state. This group is known for their performances at Wisconsin’s fi n-est clubs, festivals, theaters and con-ventions including the Kettle Moraine Jazz Festival, head-lining the La Crosse Jazz Festival, the EAA Convention in Oshkosh, Milwau-kee’s famous “Jazz in the Park” series, the Plymouth Jazz Crawl, Summerfest, Cedarburg Cultural Center and many others. For two years in a row, Joe & Janice has been the main act for the
Wisconsin Epilepsy Foundation’s “Toast of the Town,” Mil-waukee’s largest fundraiser. Janice Marie has remained constant in her love for music and people for more than 30 years. She has performed at many area festivals including Summer-fest, Bastille Days and Harley Fest. Marie has been fea-tured at the Park East Hotel’s “Jazz on the Roof” series, as well as the Ce-darburg Cultural Center and Broad-way Baby Dinner Theater. Marie also has been featured on local television, radio stations, and been given the honor to sing the national anthem at numer-ous sporting events. She describes her performance style as one that includes everything from rock and roll, big band, country and blues to jazz. The show, “Forever Ella,” narrative performance based show on the life of Ella Fitzgerald, the fi rst Lady of Song,
has become one of Marie’s passions. Her CD, “Forbidden Love,” portrays her talents as a com-poser, arranger, pro-ducer and vocalist. The show’s musical director, Joe Scheib-inger, is a fi rst-class musician and en-tertainer. He has opened for many na-tional acts includ-ing John Denver, Johnny Rivers and cast members from the “Lawrence Welk Show.” Scheibinger also works with the fi nest musicians in Wisconsin. Marie and Scheibinger fi rst met on Scheib-inger’s radio show “Backstage Live” and have been per-
forming together ever since. Marie and Scheibinger opened for the To-night Show’s Kev-in Eubanks at the Kettle Moraine Jazz Festival, and per-form at many other festivals and the-ater performances all over Wisconsin. Do not miss Marie and Scheibinger perform “Forever Ella” on June 5 at the Lake Arrow-head Golf Club ban-quet facility.

The Harold Carter Wildlife Scholar-ship received a do-nation of $500 from “Survivor” Heroes vs. Villains star, Stephenie LaGros-sa and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher, Kyle Kendrick. The Harold Carter Wildlife Scholar-ship is a non-profi t organization that was created by the family and friends of Harold Carter, whose career in wildlife and natural resources spanned fi ve decades. The goal is to create in-terest and involve-ment in conserva-tion by recognizing

I’ve seen some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, and most of them are due to the efforts of conserva-tion and wildlife protection.” When asked if the donation was a sur-prise, Carter said, “It was to me!”“It’s hard to put into words,” Carter said. “The only way it could be any better was if Kyle pitched for the Brewers.”LaGrossa has been in Wisconsin sever-al times.“I visited Juneau County in 2005, just days before I left for Mexico to compete
in ‘Survivor: Gua-temala,’ and it was beautiful,” LaGross said. “I’ve been to central Wisconsin a few times and I hope that this scholarship helps a graduating senior keep it that way.”LaGrossa and Ken-drick live in Phila-delphia and plan to marry in Napa Val-ley, Calif., this fall. The Harold Carter Wildlife Scholar-ship is offered to graduating seniors of Necedah Area High School who intend to major in wildlife, conserva-tion or biology. It will bee awarded at

Adams County Public Health Unit successfully passed the state’s health department review. As a result, Ad-ams County Public Health will main-tain its Level II sta-tus. “The hard-work-ing staff of the Ad-ams County Public Health Unit of the Health and Human Services Depart-ment helps make their community a healthier and safer place to live,” said Dr. Seth Foldy, state health offi cer. “Their department
has an actively en-gaged and support-ive Board of Health, and does an excel-lent job of engaging a supportive com-munity network to solve local public health problems.” The Wisconsin De-partment of Health Services is required to formally review the operations of all 92 Wisconsin lo-cal health depart-ments at the coun-ty or municipality level at least every fi ve years. The re-view establishes the health department as a Level I, II or III agency. A level
I agency meets the minimum require-ments and a Level III agency meets the maximum require-ments established for a local health department. The Adams County Public Health Unit provides services important to the community, such as health check pri-mary care exams, prenatal care coor-dination and fl uo-ride supplement program. For information about the Adams County Public Health, visit www.co.adams.wi.gov.

Up, up and away at Space CampMy name is Hailey Smith and I’m in sixth grade. Thanks to Adams County 4-H, I was able to go on a trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. On April 15, of this year, I was packed and ready to head off for Space Camp. Around 11 a.m., ev-eryone got on the coach bus and we started on our way to Alabama. We drove through Il-linois and stopped in Indiana to eat at Old Country Buf-fet. After dinner, we got back on the bus and drove to our ho-tel and went to bed. When we woke up, we had complimen-tary breakfast at the hotel, and got
back on the bus. We arrived at Space Camp around noon that day and went to our rooms to un-pack. Then every-one gathered on the main level of the building to re-ceive instructions on which team they would be on. I was on Team Casper, and there were a lot of nice people on that team and our counselor was very nice, too. We went on some simulators and learned a lot of very cool facts about space for the next three days we were there. On our last day, we went to the gift shop one last time and had an hour to do whatev-er we wanted; then
it was time to say good-bye to Space Camp and get on the bus. Next, we drove to Sci-Quest, also in Huntsville, and did lots of cool activities and ex-periments. Around dinner time, we left and started on the long ride back home. The trip was very fun to go on.

Cabin fever no moreAt last, the cabin fe-ver has fi nally gone away! Now that the “old-fashioned Wisconsin winter” is history, we can begin to dive into summer fun. In the Adams County Visi-tor Guide, there is a checklist for things to do throughout the year. Out of the 30-something activ-ities on the list, you can do just about … uh, everything … so start checking off your list. For your own per-sonal copy of the Ad-ams County Visitor Guide, you can fi nd one at many busi-nesses throughout Adams County or at the new chamber offi ce located at 500 Main St. in Friend-ship. Keep the guide near your phone or in your glove com-partment — it is full of information about the county such as government and emergency numbers, a busi-ness directory and the ever so popular “things to do” list.Let’s start with
2,400 acres of ATV funWith dozens of miles of age-old timberland trails in our backyard, Ad-ams County’s ter-rain is a natural for all-terrain vehicle (ATV) fun. Trails opened May 19. A 2,400-acre site, de-voted exclusively for ATV fun, is lo-cated off Badger Avenue between Highway 13 and 15th Avenue. An expanding network of township roads approved for ATV use allows ATVers to reach the site by ATV. For a current ATV map and infor-mation, contact the ATV Club at 608-564-7537 or Adams County Parks and Recreation at 608-339-4230. Rev it up at Dyra-cuse:Dyracuse Off-Road Park is located in northern Adams County in Rome.
The 240-acre mo-torcycle and ATV park activity is in full gear. The park is open on Wednes-days from 3 p.m. until dusk. On Fri-day, Saturday and Sunday, it is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. For more info visit www.romewi.com.Is golfi ng your bag?Adams County has six challenging golf courses awaiting your arrival. Lake Arrowhead, in the town of Rome in northern Adams County, Mound View Golf Course, located on Highway J in Friendship, Coldwater Canyon is located two miles north of Wiscon-sin Dells on Chula Vista Parkway in southern Adams County, Pine Crest Par located 3 1/2- miles east of the Dells on Highway 23, and Northern Bay Golf Resort & Marina is built on more than 300 pris-tine acres on Castle Rock Lake. A wet and wild
worldPerhaps water skiing and water sports is on your list of things to do. If so, take on the chal-lenge of water ski-ing, knee boarding, jet-skiing, boating or sailing in Adams County. For those who prefer to kick back in a lawn chair and spectate, the Shermalot Water Ski Show Team will satisfy your desire. With a high level of excitement and energy, spectators are in for a treat as these talented indi-viduals perform a variety of acts, pyr-amids and breath-taking stunts. Take a snapshot! While you’re check-ing off your list in the Visitor Guide, get out your camera and recharge your batteries for the 3rd Annual Photo Con-test held in Adams County; organized and sponsored by the Adams County Chamber of Com-merce & Tourism.
