In the corporate world, Roberts handled philanthropic service for a large financialcompany. So when she considered her next career path, she looked to the nonprofitside. Because Roberts’ oldest son has autism, her family has benefited from a numberof United Way-supported agencies.
“I was attracted to United Way of Delaware and how they are truly getting to the core ofthe pressing needs in the community,” she says. “Their mission is aligned with what Iwanted to do.”
Roberts also serves on West End Neighborhood House’s Loan Review Committee, whichhelps those who need security deposits for safe, affordable housing, and on the DelawareFinancial Literacy Institute Advisory Council.
“I’m passionate about affordable housing and financial literacy for those with low-to-moderate incomes,” she says. “The more aware they are, the more they can make gooddecisions about their finances.”

Meet United Way of Delaware’s newest senior staff
In his previous position as UWD’s director of Kent and Sussex counties, Moore focused onbuilding awareness and partnerships. Now he’s bringing that mission to the entire state. “It’s aboutgetting the message out about United Way,” he says. “We maximize the community’s resources toimprove people’s lives.”
Moore witnessed United Way’s impact when he was in the U.S. Air Force through the United Way/Combined Federal Campaign, which provides Federal employees with quality-of-life resources.“There were families dealing with cancer, income problems or a sick child,” he recalls.
An ordained minister who works with youth for Calvary Baptist Church in Dover, Moore sees aparallel purpose between both vocations. “The ministry involves helping those who are hurting, giving them a sense of hope and a sense of direction,” he says. “When we reach out our hands toone, we influence the condition of all.”

Stacey Haddock SchillerDirector, Marketing and Communications
by Pam George
Before she joined United Way of Delaware, Schiller regularly designated funds for the LaurelSenior Center during her company’s annual United Way campaign drive.
Her family is from Laurel, and her grandparents still reside there.“It’s a great example of a small organization supported by a larger nonprofit,” she says. In her
new position, Schiller wants to spread the word about United Way of Delaware’s public andprivate partnerships.
Schiller formerly served as interim marketing director of Saint Clare’s Health System inDenville, N.J. She’s held marketing and account management positions with Blue Cross BlueShield of Delaware, the Cardiac & Vascular Institute at NYU Medical Center and AloysiusButler & Clark in Wilmington.
When she’s not at work, Schiller takes to the street to help United Way agencies. She is an avidparticipant in 5K and 10K runs for charities. “It’s another way to support United Way’s mission,” shesays. “It’s good exercise for me and it’s good for the community.”

Sandy Merritt, a security supervisor for AstraZeneca, enjoyed working with Businesson Call, a program of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia thatconnects arts organizations with businesspeople interested in volunteering.
Sandy led the Business on Call program for AstraZeneca and informedAstraZeneca leadership that if they launched a volunteer initiative focused onhealth and human services, that she would willingly lead that initiative as well.Shortly afterwards, Healthcare Heroes was born. “It’s aligned with my personal beliefs,”says Merritt, who has a son with Asperger’s Syndrome. “And I feel strongly abouthelping the company demonstrate their corporate responsibility.”
Founded in 2006, Healthcare Heroes group builds connections betweenAstraZeneca employees and unmet needs in local healthcare settings. HealthcareHeroes supports a major AstraZeneca initiative: helping the uninsured populationin Delaware.
Healthcare Heroes has partnered with numerous area organizations includingChristiana Care Health Systems, A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Easter Seals, Ronald McDonald House, Wilmington VAMedical Center and Westside Health.
Volunteer activities run the gamut. One employee, a pilot, flies for Angel FlightMid-Atlantic, which provides medical air transport for people in need. Anotherassists patients and families in the emergency room.
Volunteers’ personal preferences are taken into account. Some like workingdirectly with patients. Others would rather be behind the scenes. Some can onlygive a few hours a month; others want a weekly commitment.
To further help link volunteers to volunteer opportunities, AstraZeneca plansto launch a corporate version of United Way of Delaware’s Give Back Delaware
site, www.givebackde.org, which lists hundreds of volunteer opportunities andallows for tracking and documentation of volunteer hours.
“It is my passion to help others,” Merritt says. “And it’s AstraZeneca’s passion as well.”

Diane Edward of Magnolia has a new, wheelingbackpack.
“I love this bag,” she says. “A lot.”Though it might seem small, Diane is very grateful
for her new bag, which United Way of Delaware(UWD) donated to her employer – Kent-Sussex Indus-tries (KSI) a UWD partner agency in Milford that em-ploys Delawareans with disabilities.
Diane has severely arthritic hands and walks with acane. She used to carry a heavy tote, which made it dif-ficult for her to walk safely. The new bag helps her tokeep her balance when she carries her belongings toand from work.
The bag was one of many goods donated by fouroutlet stores in Rehoboth Beach and Queenstown,MD. IZOD, Geoffrey Beene, Bass Shoe, and CalvinKlein have routinely donated goods, such as clothing, jewelry, shoes and luggage to UWD for the past sevenyears. UWD’s AFL-CIO Community Service staff bringthe donations to their Newark office, where the goodsare sorted by volunteers from the Limen House, aUWD partner agency that helps men and women re-covering from drug dependency. Then, AFL-CIOCommunity Services staff distributes the goods toagencies in need. For more information, contact 302-456-3500.
