Summer Sunday School Resources for the Home

Although we had our Sunday School Commencement on May 19th and give our dedicated Sunday

School teachers a break from teaching during the summer months, we certainly do not take a break

from teaching and forming the spiritual lives of our children. Although we will not have a formal

“Summer Sunday School” program this year, the most important way to form and educate our children

in the Orthodox Faith is to live it and read about it in our homes. Thankfully, there are an abundance

of resources we can use for the spiritual formation of our children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces,

and godchildren.

Over the next year we will be developing a children’s resource corner in the parish library. In the

meantime, you can access many wonderful books and resources online and at our parish bookmobile:

• Orthodox Pebbles [https://orthodoxpebbles.com/] is a

FREE collection of teaching resources for the Orthodox

Sunday School classroom and home, targeting the younger

age groups (Preschool and early Elementary).

• Ancient Faith Store [https://store.ancientfaith.com/] is an

excellent resource for children’s religious books, prayer

books, and Lives of Saints.

• Potamitis Publishing https://orthodoxchildrensbooks.com/

is the place to go for easy to read Lives of Saints books.

• Spiritual Fragrance Publishing https://spiritualfranceinc.com

provides many books about the lives of the Evangelists,

Saints, and Martyrs for older children and teenagers.

The greatest gift God gives to us is TIME. Let us use our

time wisely this summer and make a COMMITMENT to the

spiritual formation of our children by reading to them

spiritually edifying books such as the Holy Scriptures and

Lives of the Saints, praying together, and devoting time to

discuss the deeper meaning and purpose of life as a gift

from God.

There are many distractions for children these days, and it

may be tempting for parents to allow them to spend hours

each day on mindless games and apps in the cyberworld.

But nothing can replace the quality time we spend face to

face with our children, reading to them and discussing the

inexhaustible TREASURES of our Orthodox Faith.

As the image to the right beautifully expresses, remember

this summer that “There is no app to replace your lap.”

Orthodox Christians are Resurrection People

1. We participate in the Divine Liturgy every Sun-

day …. the Lord’s Day..

2. We receive Holy Communion regularly.

3. We encourage family members to participate

in the Liturgy.

4. We consider it a divine privilege to have an Or-

thodox Church in which to worship.

5. We worship at the Liturgy with other Orthodox

Christians worldwide.

6. At the Liturgy we pray with Orthodox believers

of all times and places, as they pray for us in

the community of God’s love.

7. We listen attentively to the Epistle and Gospel

lessons, and try to observe their teachings

which are God’s word to us. See the Bible

readings on pages 45-156 of the red Liturgy

books in the pews.

8. We come to the Liturgy on time. to show re-

spect for worship, and also not to be a distrac-

tion to others by coming late.

9. We pray that the Lord will help us be at-tentive

to the service in order to receive the spiritual

blessings it offers.

PRACTICE HAVING A DAILY QUIET TIME

Keep a daily spiritual discipline.

1) PRAY and include (a) praise, (b).

thanksgiving, (c). intercession (praying for others),

(d) personal confession.

When? Your Quiet Time can be in the morning, after-

noon. evening, or night, whatever suits your daily

schedule. If you miss a day, don’t become discour-

aged. Start again the next day.

PENTECOST…COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Each day and often we repeat this

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

“HEAVENLY KING, COMFORTER, THE SPIRIT OF

TRUTH, PRESENT EVERYWHERE, WHO FILLS ALL

THINGS, THE TREASURY OF BLESSINGS AND GIVER

OF LIFE, COME AND ABIDE IN US, AND CLEANSE US

FROM EVERY SIN, AND SAVE OUR SOULS, O GOOD

ONE.”

Our Lord Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, third person of

the Holy Trinity, upon the Church fifty days after

his Resurrection, as promised, that we might live

with His power (Acts 1:8).

The Holy Spirit sanctifies and enlightens all believ-

ers throughout the ages. We pray to Him regularly

to enable us to live in God’s will with firm faith

and hope.

Jesus said, “He who believes in me, as the Scripture

has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living

water…This He spoke con-cernIng the Spirit, who

those believing in Him would receive (John 8:38-39).

The Apostle Paul enumerates nine fruits of the Ho-

ly Spirit which we receive when we pray:: “love,

joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians

5:22-23)

HYMN OF PENTECOST

“Blessed are You, O Christ our God. You have ex-

alted the fishermen as all wise, by sending upon

them the Holy Spirit, and through them, You have

drawn the universe into Your net, Lover of human-

kind, Glory to You.”
