June/July 2020 From Caren’s Desk! The 2020 Clinton County and 4-H Fair is just around the corner! It will be different this year, but we are fortunate to be having a fair this year, since many counties aren’t able. The anticipation is building as you ready your projects, put the final touches on your record sheets, and get your animals ready to show. With all the excitement of the Fair and the preparation that goes into this event, please don’t overlook the opportunity to model kindness to those you interact with during the summer. There are times in life when EVERYTHING is going just as planned, and it’s easy to have a positive attitude and wear a smile. But what about those times when things are tough and we have to work even harder to achieve the goals we set for ourselves? That is when the opportunity to lead by example presents itself. After all, when you’ve done your best and you display a winning attitude, you are a winner! Remember we are responsible for our actions today and always. We feel great when we make good choices and others will see the joy in all we do! I am so excited to have the opportunity to view your projects and watch you put your best foot forward in 2020. does not have room to store miscellaneous 4-H projects. Plan ahead! If you are not available to

pick up your 4-H projects, please make arrangements with a neighbor or grandparent. Remember, it is not your 4-H Leader’s responsibility to pick up and store your projects either. All projects,

Livestock Information

Fair Entry Due Date: June 26 All livestock projects must be re-entered on https://clintoncounty.fairentry.com by June 26.

Livestock Penning Forms & YQCA Certificates Penning forms and copies of YQCA/PQA certificates are due to the Extension office by June 26.

Barn Clean-Up If you aren’t showing off your trailer, your animals will be penned in the swine barn.

Please note: all pens must be cleaned immediately after your show to be ready for

the next species the following day.

Observe all Livestock Health Requirements As a 4-H member, YOU are responsible for being aware of, and following, all of the pertinent

health requirements for your animal exhibits. Health papers are NOT required for entry to the

fairgrounds. Animals are still expected to be free of any contagious diseases and/or fungus. Any

animals showing symptoms of disease will be dismissed. Please be sure to observe all regulations

and withdrawal times for antibiotics given to livestock, INCLUDING those given in feed. The

penalties for violating these withdrawal times for drug residues are severe. Please note: There

will not be any livestock auction or market trucks available this year.

Ear Tags If your animal loses an ear tag, please contact the Extension Office or your Livestock

Superintendent as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made to have the animal

retagged before the fair. YOU CANNOT RETAG YOUR ANIMAL WHEN IT ARRIVES TO

CHECK-IN AT THE FAIR.

Show Numbers Anytime after noon on Sunday, July 12th, you can turn in your record sheets and pick up your

Exhibitor Number at the 4-H Council Mini Barn. You MUST turn in a completed and signed

Record Sheet in order to receive your number. Please take care of this number as it will be the

only one issued for the week, no matter how many species you show.

Special Sanitizing Procedures Only one large animal species will be shown each day. This allows time for better cleaning and

sanitizing between shows. We are extending the show arena for increased social distancing.

In addition to a larger show arena, we will also have a larger holding area.

Social Distancing We are following all CDC guidelines. Extension Staff, 4-H Volunteers and 4-H Members will be

wearing face coverings when social distancing is difficult to do. We want everyone to be

comfortable, so please bring your own face covering. Hand sanitizer will be readily available.

2020 INDIANA STATE FAIR UPDATE

The Indiana State Fair Commission and the Indiana State Fair Board announced a modified State Fair 4-H Livestock Show with additional activities that will be held on the State Fairgrounds in August. This year’s traditional Indiana State Fair will not take place. Ultimately, the difficult decision was driven by the impact of COVID-19. “Unfortunately, key elements including vendors and partners of the Fair began falling off and so we pivoted, and found a way to still serve our communities,” said Brad Chambers, Indiana State Fair Commission Chairman. “Safety is our number one priority. We’ve spent months working through options that would allow us to host the Fair,’ said Cindy Hoye, Executive Director of the Indiana State Fair Commission. “Agriculture and youth are the foundation of our mission and the heartbeat of the Indiana State Fair, so we are determined and proud to honor our 4-H members with a version of that State Fair experience that allows Indiana’s youth to be recognized for their dedication and hard work.” The Indiana State Fair is an annual celebration of all things Indiana, showcasing youth and agriculture along with great food, animals, entertainment, and exhibits. It is a complex event that requires years of planning by the staff, partners and vendors. In 2019, nearly 879,000 people attended the Indiana State Fair. Hoye said “We are grateful for the support of our State Fair Family; each one of you who makes the iconic event possible every summer. To our beloved fans, staff, sponsors, exhibitors, 4-H & FFA members, vendors, volunteers and entertainers – we look forward to being back at full strength in August 2021.” This is not the first time the Indiana State Fair was modified or did not take place. During the Civil War and WWII the Fairgrounds was needed to support the war effort.
