Russian Federation leads the way on first day of AthleticsAfter 23 finals on day one of the athletics competition the Russian Federation top the table with five gold medals and two silvers. In second place is the USA with four gold medals, but they are the most successful nation overall so far with an additional seven silver and five bronze medals. After day one the top five nations in athletics are as follows:

Notable amongst the results were Scotland (CP Sport)’s victories in both the men and women’s 400m race running events by Gavin Drysdale and Hannah Dines. Amanda Kotaja from Finland who competed at both the London 2012 Paralympic Games and the IPC World Athletics Championships of 2013 was successful in 400m wheelchair for Under 23 women and Hollie Arnold, who competed in London 2012, but whose event is not on the programme for the European IPC Athletics Championships in Swansea later this month, made up for some of that disappointment by winning the under 23 discus for women.

In the wheelchair fencing the finals of the boys and girls foil ended with victories for Ng Chi Fung of Hong Kong in the boys and Amaril Veres of Hungary in the girls.
