7th Language Arts: After a change in plans, we will be picking back up with DOL

Week 6 which includes the skills: comparative, helping verbs with present participle,

compound sentences, and titles. There will be a DOL quiz on Friday. We are continu-

ing to develop our comparative writing skills by analyzing how passages featuring

book to film comparisons. We will also begin our next writing assignment which will

be a comparative essay between the book and film version of Lightning Thief .

7th Literature: Next week, we will continue reading and discussing The Lightning

Thief . We will continue to analyze the text using the concept of the hero’s journey. In

addition, we will begin to work in small literature circles to focus on developing

textual analysis skills.

8th Language Arts: We will continue to work on expository writing skills by

incorporating source information and giving credit to the author. We will also

discuss components of a strong conclusion and students will begin to work on

including this aspect in their paper.

8th Literature: We have finished watching the film version of The Giver. Next

week, we are looking at a test that will be spread over both Monday and Tuesday.

During the test, students will be allowed to use their sheet comparing the film to the

book. They will also be allowed to use their book for textual evidence. A great way to

prepare for the test would be to look over the review guide handed out in class, the

active reading notes taken in the book while reading, and the work completed in

literature circles. Looking ahead, the next novel we will read will be Wonder by RJ

Palacio.

5th Grade Math: Students will be spending the week reviewing all of the

standards discussed so far. Order of operations, numerical expressions, reading,

writing, comparing, and rounding decimals, and multiplying and dividing whole

numbers will be heavily emphasized.

All of these concepts are found on Study Island, and it would be extremely

beneficial practice!

5th Grade Literature: Students will begin the standard RL.5.3 focusing on

comparing and contrasting characters, settings, and plots within a story. This is

quite the challenge! With patience and perseverance, I am certain the kids will

succeed!
