JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS | FRIDAY 6 MARCH 2020 NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS From the Head Master This Sunday is being marked around the world as International Women’s Day. I addressed the Middle and Senior boys at quad assembly on Tuesday, regarding this topic. The text of my address is as follows: Last year, after I spoke about International Women’s Day on quad, a couple of people asked me if we would be focussing on International Men’s Day too. The short answer was ‘No’. In our context, pretty much everything we do is focussed on shaping good men. Your wellbeing, your safety, your opportunities, your future are all front and centre in this school every day. We know that boys and men face particular challenges, and have particular needs. Your school is very tangibly committed to supporting men, so there is no need or point in making a particular focus of it. However, I want to push back a bit on the question. The logic is ‘We have an International Women’s Day. Why don’t we have an International Men’s Day?’ The question fails to recognise that there are, throughout history, across the world and within our own society, some fundamental issues to do with the interactions of men and women that must be confronted. Gendered roles in society, participation in the public sphere, relative economic advantage, and various gaps associated with gender, are all ripe for inquiry and challenge. However, the main one that I wish to address today is that of respect. Respect is – or should be – the underlying stance that each one of us takes to other people. In Christian thinking, this respect arises from a recognition of the imago Dei – the image of God – in every person. The person next to you around the quad, the person opposing you in a scrum, the person teaching you in a class, the person squashed with you onto a train, the person under your responsibility in cadets …. Every one is made in the image of God, and deserves your respect. This is true, regardless of their race, their nationality, their appearance, their ability, their sexuality or their gender. You have probably heard it said that respect needs to be earned. I disagree wholeheartedly. Respect is given, not earned. Our stance, from the beginning of an encounter to the end of it, is respect. I expect your teachers to show respect to you, and I expect you to show respect to them. If you find yourself in a disciplinary situation at this school, regardless what it may be, you will be treated with respect. Respect should be the default setting for all relationships. I don’t think that it is controversial to suggest that throughout history, across the world, and within our own society, there needs to be more respect from men toward women. It may be that you object to that statement. It may be that you have examples in your own experience where disrespect has flowed the other way. In the last two years a number of students have left our school because of their disrespect towards women – both staff, and girls from other schools. An event like International Women’s Day provides us with one opportunity – and there are many in the course of a year – when we acknowledge that part of your journey toward adulthood includes learning to respect women. NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS

Last year, after I spoke about International Women’s Day on quad, a couple of people asked me if we would befocussing on International Men’s Day too.

The short answer was ‘No’. In our context, pretty much everything we do is focussed on shaping good men. On one level, we have to acknowledge that there is no simple answer to the complexities of the relationshipsbetween men and women in society. But on another level, the answer is very simple. Respect.

COVID-19As you are doubtless aware, the situation with COVID-19 is fluid and continues to evolve. The School will continueto follow the directions and advice of the NSW Department of Health. Their advice is captured on this web-page.

Our instructions to the Trinity Grammar School community reflect this advice.

If your son is unwell, do not send him to school.Practise good hygiene, particularly with reference to washing hands.

Overseas travel to, or transiting through, certain countries entails a period of fourteen days of self-isolation uponreturn. We expect families to follow this advice, and to notify the School if self-isolation is necessary.

The School has been advised that wide-spread closure of schools, such as has taken place in some othercountries, is not an imminent measure in NSW. However, temporary closure of individual schools is possible. Ifsuch a closure is required of Trinity, and I have no indication that this is likely, further information will beforthcoming.

In the meantime, living and learning at Trinity continue unaffected, and we have enough toilet paper!

From the Deputy Head Master - Policy and Strategy | WinterSports Uniform

The advent of COVID 19 and the shutdown of factories in China has resulted in a delay in the supply of the newthe Winter sport uniform for sports such as Rugby, Football, AFL and Cross Country.

The intention was that this new uniform would be available for Year 4 and Year 7 students as part of thetransition to the new Midford Sports Uniform Range.

Students in Years 5 and 6 as well as students in Years 8 to 12 will continue to use the current uniform for Rugby,Football and Cross Country. This is available for purchase at the Midford Uniform Shop.

At this stage, students in Years 4 and 7 will wear their All School PE uniform for training until the new uniform isavailable.

The Sportsmasters at the Senior and Middle School and the Preparatory and Junior Schools will communicate thetemporary uniform required for the sports who do not yet have the new uniform available.

Dear Parents and Friends of the Junior School,

As you are doubtless aware, the situation with COVID-19 is fluid and continues to evolve. The School willcontinue to follow the directions and advice of the NSW Department of Health. The Head Master has updated the Trinity community about this situation elsewhere in this newsletter. Teacherswill continue to educate and remind students to practise good hygiene. Hygienic habits are always important incommunities but are especially pertinent at the moment.

Our week has had charity ‘bookends’. On Monday, Mufti Day raised over $800 in the Junior School and $4,890school-wide for another school community, St John’s at Broulee, impacted by the summer bushfires. This was aninitiative from our student leaders. Today, the boys accepted the challenge of ‘A Day without Speech’ andincreased their awareness of the complexities posed by communication disabilities. For some boys, this was afirst-time experience, whilst others have been developing this understanding over years of participating in thisday at school. In every classroom, from Kindergarten to Year 6, lessons were adapted and classes went without awhisper until morning tea! Even Chapel singing was acted silently. Check out the brilliant video of today’sactivities made by our IT student leaders here. By this morning, we had already passed our $10000 goal for OICCambodia in their quest to educate teachers and train speech therapists in a country where there are none. Butwe hope that will soon change! In contrast, we had five speech therapists visit us this afternoon to de-brief ourboys! I thank our community for the enormous number of donations, big and small. Please discuss with your sonhis experience today. Whilst we had fun, we have reminded the boys that the children we are helping do not havethe choice to start and stop after a few hours, nor the technology we have to aid their communication. If yourson is yet to seek sponsorship, it is still OK to collect sponsors until next week when we will declare the highestindividual and class fundraisers. One of the GROWTH messages to boys this week is that being a Trinitarianinvolves helping others, even those we haven’t met, when we become aware of a need that we can meet. Thegood-natured support and generosity of boys, parents and teachers have been a wonderful illustration of thatcharacteristic. It is indeed a privilege to belong to a community that is outward-looking in supporting those lessfortunate in practical ways.

Sunday is International Women’s Day. The Junior School will mark International Women’s Day next week. Theteachers and I will speak with the boys about the value of all people, especially of women and girls. We will makeour boys aware that in countries in the world and even in some aspects of our own community, women and girlsare not afforded the same status, respect, reward, opportunities or access to education as men and boys. We willalso discuss real ways that boys can act for change in their own circumstances, and our desire for them to growinto young men whose words and deeds communicate that women and men are equally deserving of respect andopportunities. Mr Niulala has even written a song for the boys to learn. The School and parents have animportant role to consistently communicate to our boys the God-given value and uniqueness of every person andequip them to challenge inequality or unfairness with action that is rooted in justice, compassion and respect.

Next week, all families will receive notification of how to book a Parent/Teacher/Student conference in Week9. These conferences are a terrific opportunity for you, your son, and his teacher to discuss goals for the yearand important next steps in learning. Your son’s presence in this meeting is to facilitate a three-wayconversation rather than simply a conversation between adults. I encourage all parents to make this meeting apriority and book in a time to meet with the teacher.

On Monday, our School Captains, Officers and House Leaders joined with the Preparatory School Officers andleaders from hundreds of NSW schools at National Young Leaders’ Day at The International ConventionCentre, where they were inspired by guest speakers and challenged in their thinking about the opportunitiesthey have to influence their peers and school community. We look forward to seeing them grow into their roles,spurred on by their experience this week. Next week, Cru leaders will accompany Mr Brigden to Meriden for Cru-FIT, an afternoon of training and networking with other student leaders who run lunchtime Christian groups. InYear 6, all boys exercise leadership in a chosen position and experience a variety of exposures and opportunitiesto develop their skills and serve others.

boys were a credit to the School and performed very well against high-quality opposition. It is a pleasure toreport that Peter Galanos, Hamish Turner, Jonny Orr and Eamon Turner have all qualified for CISChampionships in diving, as well as Nathan Jones, Zac Bachir, Will Saunders, Max Munday and DanielZhang in swimming events. Well done, boys on your outstanding individual and relay team achievements. Weare proud of all the boys who represented the Junior School especially given the significant disruptions to theirtraining throughout this term.

‘Amazing Me’ education sessions provide information and support to students and parents in discussingaspects of personal development. Boys have brought home information and permission letters about thesesessions which are scheduled for Monday 16th March. Please note that the Year 6 session starts at 7pm followingthe separate Year 4 session which commences at 5.30pm. Year 6 also participate in a follow-up class session onFriday 20th March. Please return permission forms indicating whether you and your son will or will not beattending the sessions.

Miss Morgan is seeking parent expertise to contribute to STEAM programmes. Please open her piecelinked in this newsletter to see how you can add value to these lessons which are much loved by so many of ourboys.

Year 6 parents are reminded of the Year 7 Information Evening in the James Wilson Hogg Assembly Hall nextTuesday evening. This night is the beginning of the process of preparing for Middle School and I encourage allYear 6 parents to attend.

We wish Mrs Richards and Mrs Scott a safe and enjoyable time focussed on their own families as they takewell-deserved long service leave for the rest of this term. Mr Munnoch will be looking after the boys in 6R incoming weeks as well as attending the Canberra excursion, and Mrs Ianella will teach Mrs Scott’s students.

Fitzroy Crossing | Hassall Collection now on exhibition

Drop into Delmar Gallery this weekend and see an extraordinary collection of painting from the Kimberley.

Fitzroy Crossing | Hassall Collection was launched last Friday evening, with an illuminating and engaging speechby Luke Scholes, Curator of Aboriginal Art and Material Culture at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NorthernTerritory. Mr Scholes spoke about the fraught history of Fitzroy Crossing, how painting has helped to rebuildcommunities and the cultural knowledge shared by the artists represented in the exhibition.

The exhibition spans 1989 – 2019 with 35 paintings by Janangoo Butcher Cherel (c1920 – 2009), Wakartu CorySurprise (c1929 – 2011) and Ngarralja Tommy May (born 1935). Wakartu and Ngarralja were both born andspent their early years on Country in the Great Sandy Desert, while Janangoo was brought up on a cattle stationlocated on his ancestral homeland in the river country. They belong to three of the ten different language groupswho moved to Fitzroy Crossing after being forced off their land.

Aspects of river and desert country reverberate through their paintings, with Wakartu’s sweeps of coloursuggesting vast views of sandhills and waterholes, while Janangoo’s pulsating patterns record naturalphenomena such as flood waters receding or clusters of bush fruits. Ngarralja’s innovative works on enamelledaluminium, Perspex and canvas chart seasonal changes in vegetation and weather systems across Wangkajungaand Walmajarri country.

The paintings are on loan from the Hassall Collection, a private collection of 20th century and contemporary art,distinguished by the depth in which individual artists are represented. The exhibition has been curated byCatherine Benz and Robert Hirschmann.

ICAS Competitions - Year 3 to 6 studentsIf you would like your son to compete in the 2020 ICAS Competitions (Year 3 to 6 only), you will be asked tonominate which competitions you would like him to be entered in. At the Junior School the following ICAScompetitions are offered: English, Mathematics and Writing. This year all the competitions will be held inAugust/September, Term 3 and will be completed online. With the exception of ICAS Writing for Years 3 and 4which will be completed on paper.

Year 6 Mandarin and Visual Arts ExcursionOn Friday the 28th of February, Year 6 first arrived at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and we later tasted anauthentic Yum Cha meal. The museum contained a variety of art forms and helped improve our understanding ofvisual and creative knowledge. At the end of the day, we all appreciated this marvellous experience the Schoolhad given us, so we can thoroughly understand the Chinese culture as well as what type of art the gallery hasavailable for us to see.

The Art Gallery of NSW contained spectacular projects and paintings, which all had a story or a meaning. The firstexhibition we saw was called ‘In One Drop of Water’, located in the Asian Galleries. Three educators introducedus to a few of the excellent projects, helped us with the meaning of the art, and taught us about what itrepresents and how they produced their artwork. We then went to another exhibition called Art Express. Theseartworks were created by talented Year 12s who studied Visual Arts for their HSC. The entire gallery was filledwith spectacular and meaningful pieces of art. All of Year 6 were grateful to learn and see these unique pieces ofart. The Art Gallery was really something special.

As Art Leaders we will have the pleasure to explain one of our favourite art pieces we saw on the excursion. Theartwork that we will explain to you was an extremely skilled and creative piece of art. The artwork was createdafter a student from Year 12 took a trip to South Africa and was inspired by what she saw there. This art piecewas a Visual Arts HSC major work and was selected as one of the best in the state. The artwork was a 3Dsculpture of small buildings displayed on the wall, made out of scraps like tin and cardboard. It looked like a verycompact, busy and harsh environment to live in. Sadly, people in South Africa do have to live in these places,which is why she created this artwork to make this problem stand out. We chose this particular artwork as one ofour favourite artworks in the exhibition, because its message and the concept behind it were very strong andpowerful. It was also well made, and looked amazing on the wall of the gallery.

Experiencing the Art Gallery was amazing! However, after walking and learning for so long we needed somethingto quell our hunger. Yum Cha was awaiting our arrival on the 5th floor of a small mall, and delicious Chinesecuisine greeted our arrival. Our food consisted of prawn dumplings, prawn toast, fried rice, noodles, mangopancakes and more. All of Year 6 loved the food and drinks! The teachers were also pleased to try the Yum Chameal. We tried learning how to use chopsticks which was a great experience, we showed our manners to all ofthe staff and respected the food. Many boys had a taste of the cuisine for the first time.

Library News | Junior SchoolIn 2019, Year 1 students borrowed an amazing 2,345 library books over the year! This was the largest number ofbooks borrowed by a grade over the year, representing an average of more than 100 books borrowed perstudent! Like Kindergarten, Year 1 students also enjoyed funny picture books like the Elephant and Piggy seriesby Mo Willems as well as exploring some early chapter books like the Boy vs Beast series.

I believe every parent should read the picture book What Do You Do with an Idea ? by Kobi Yamada. Miss Grattonread this to us in chapel last year, and it is a great story about inquiry, about being brave and the rewards thatcome when you take a chance on something new.

SPORT

Sportsmaster | Junior SchoolA reminder if we have inclement weather, there may be more than one update on the wet weather line ( 1300788 477) on Friday evenings and /or Saturday mornings and on the TGS App, which should be first port of call.We are guided by other schools on away fixtures. You need to choose the Junior School option when accessingthe wet weather number.

Please be on time for all sport and training. I am constantly reminding boys to be there 30 minutes beforematches but on Saturday and this Tuesday for training before school, boys were wandering in well after gameshad started or sessions had commenced.

Winter Season

Round 1 is on Saturday, May 2nd and runs through May (9, 16, 23, 30) and June (13 & 20) with the exceptions ofJune 6th (Long Weekend) and June 27th (mid-year holidays) where there is NO sport on those Saturdays. Wehave our final rounds of winter competition (rounds 8-10) upon our return from the mid-year vacation on July25th, August 1st & August 8th, which is our final round of winter sport.

Please keep these dates aside. Currently we are organisng the Winter fixtures, Thursday morning trials/ trainingwill commence on March 19th, the Thursday after summer season has ceased for Term 1. Boys are remindedthat mouthguards are essential for rugby and shin guards for football as well as boots for all threewinter sports.

If your son is elected in an Intra team for Winter, we will be commencing with Football for at least the first fiveweeks of Term 2.

Once the draft draw is ready, I will load it onto the TGS App under season draw to give you a guide as to wherematches will be hosted but please wait until teams are announced for exact times and locations. All homefootball matches in Intra Sport will once again be held at Bressington Park.

A reminder there is no sport on March 21st but we have a Winter Trials day on Saturday, March 28th.

TGSJS Cross Country Championships

These will be held, weather permitting on Friday morning, March 20th at school as a precursor to the IPSHACross Country which will take place at The Kings School on Saturday, April 4th. Only five boys will go in each agegroup to Kings, a squad of 20.

IPSHA Swimming/Diving

Our swimming & diving team had their ‘Grand Final’ at SOPAC on Wednesday and did extremely well. Someoutstanding results were: Nathan Jones (4A), Zac Bachir (5J), Will Saunders (5J) and Max Munday (5J) whoqualified first in the 4x50m Junior Relay; Nathan also qualified individually in 3 strokes; Zac 2 strokes; and ouryoungest swimmer, Daniel Zhang (2W), came 3rd in the U8 50m Freestyle. We have five swimmers progressingto the CIS carnival.

In Diving, Peter Galanos (6T) came first in U12 1m Springboard, Hamish Turner (6T) came third and Jonny Orr(6H) fourth, all three boys progress to CIS along with Eamon Turner (4T) who won the U10 1m Springboard. Wehave four divers in the team. Peter also won the 5m Platform event.

All nine boys have made it through to represent IPSHA at the CIS Swimming and Diving team at the CISchampionships at SOPAC on March 26th.

Junior School Auxiliary NewsHello Junior School families, I hope your boys are settled into their first term and enjoying various activities andopportunities the school offers.

I wanted to give you an update on the activities of the Junior School Auxiliary (JSA), it’s been a busy start to theyear.

Mr Dunn welcomed a well-attended first meeting of the JSA last month at Envy Café. At the meeting we confirmedthe parent representatives for each year, and by now you should all be in a WhatsApp or Facebook group foryour year. Your year parent is your point of contact, and coordinator, for your year. They will pass on informationto your year from the JSA, Head of the School and teachers as things come up during the year. You’ll also findyour group really helpful for day to day queries or reminders about certain events or activities for your year. Ifyou are not yet connected to your year group, please contact me [email protected] and I can ensure you getconnected to the right group.

In February we also had our JSA welcome event, Movie Under the Stars, and I hope all those who attended agree,it was a great night! The weather held for us, the boys had a great time playing basketball and watching ourmovie Space Jam , and parents were able to enjoy some time meeting and mixing with other families in a relaxedenvironment. A special thanks to Mr Dunn and all the teachers who attended and helped out throughout thenight. We really are lucky to have such a wonderful group of teachers, who had no obligation to attend but choseto join us and help make the night the success it was.

It’s hard to believe we are half way through Term 1 already, and the JSA is currently working to finalise our plansfor Term 2, in particular Mother’s Day. For Mother’s Day the JSA run a stall for the boys to purchase gifts forMum’s, Grandma’s, Aunt’s or anyone else special to them, for Mother’s Day. The stall will be held on Tuesday the5th of May, and the teachers make time during the day for boys from each class to come and buy a gift if theywish. A notice, and reminders, will be given closer to the time so the boys remember to bring in money.

We are now finalising our Mother’s Day gift selection for the stall, and would really appreciate anemail [email protected] if you have, or work for, a business that may have some ‘Mother’s Day’items that we could sell for this fundraiser.
