Bishop Addresses SophomoresAt Class Retreat
The general topic for this year’s sophomoreretreat was prayer and we were very fortunate tohave as our keynote speaker Bishop FrederickCampbell. The Bishop spoke to the assembledclass at St. Mary Magdalene Church on Friday,January 29.
Following the bishop’s address, the studentsreturned to school and attended a presentation byMs Cindy Oddi on Taize prayer, followed by theirparticipation in this unique prayer form. (Taize isa meditative experience of prayer that includessilence and chanting.)
The 110 participants rotated through threeafternoon presentations: Deacon Dan Hann fromSt. Patrick/London presented Liturgy of theHours, the official prayer of the Church offered atvarious times during the day. Ms Sharon Curtinpresented Mary and Marian devotion and MsPam Welsh-Huggins discussed the importance ofmusic in the liturgy. The retreat concluded withthe Liturgy of the Word, with sophomores MariaMartello on piano and Tim Pishitelli on guitar.
Prior to, and during, the retreat, theparticipants painted bowls to be sold, withproceeds going to the mission in the Philippines.
The retreat, planned through CampusMinistry, fulfilled the mission of giving students achance to focus on topics other than everydayevents in a way that enhances their spiritually, onboth the spiritual/thoughtful plane and inpracticality.

In Her Own Words…
(Ed. Note: Sophomore Marisa Ross had anunusual and gratifying trip over the recentChristmas holiday break. We’ve asked her totell us about her time at the Tournament ofRoses Parade. The following is a recount of hertrip to California and the story of how oneperson can make a difference….)
When we boarded the plane fromIndianapolis to Los Angeles and the pilotannounced that the Ohio State School for theBlind marching band was on board, it was thefirst time it really hit me that I was going to bepart of something amazing. When we arrived inCalifornia, we were all exhausted but exhilaratedto finally be where we had been working to befor almost two years. The 32 student members ofthe band and about 40 marching assistants had,at last, made it to Pasadena, California for theTournament of Roses Parade.
The day after we landed, the chaos startedwith band rehearsal and a performance atDisneyland. The next day was even crazier, witha wet, cold and muddy BandFest, float viewingfor the Rose Parade and our first trip to the RoseBowl Stadium.
At BandFest, the Blind School performedtheir half-time show based around music byStevie Wonder. They were the only band thereto receive a standing ovation from the crowd, and though they could not see it, the smiles onevery student’s face indicated that they knew itanyway. Along with the Blind School, theBandFest featured three other Ohio bands (OhioState, Ohio University, and PickeringtonCentral) and at the end, all four bandsperformed “Beautiful Ohio” together.
The next day was even more packed, (butthankfully sunny and about 70 degrees) with atrip to the Grammy Museum and a performanceat the Rose Palace in Pasadena for the judgingof the Lions’ Club float. After that, we rang in2010 Eastern Time at the Santa Monica Pier, where there was an unexpected Buckeye Bash, filled to the brim with thousands of Buckeyefans getting pumped up for the next day’s game.
Enjoying the day…Marisa Ross with OSSB band members.
We went back to the hotel and got to bedearly to prepare for the big day we had all beenwaiting for: The Tournament of Roses Parade. After an early 3:45 AM wake-up call, we wereoff to make history as the first blind marchingband in the world and the smallest band ever tomarch in the Rose Parade. My brother and I weremarching assistants and along with 30 others, weguided the students along the five and a half mileparade. My sister and my mom watched from thecrowd, and they said that the kids sounded betterthan they ever had before. When we hit the endof the parade, the band director, Dan Kelly, whois blind himself, screamed “WE DID IT!!!!” andit was the best feeling of my life. All the kidsstarted jumping up and down in celebration at thetremendous thing they had just accomplished andeverybody started hugging each other and cryinghappy tears.
The student I was marching with, Sarah, said to me “we redefined what it means to beblind,” and then hugged me.
After the parade we all ate a very much-needed lunch, then were off to the Rose BowlStadium for the big game. Thankfully, that gamewas far from disappointing with a 26-17Buckeye victory over Oregon. After the game,we went to get some dinner, then finally retiredto our hotel rooms after an exhausting day. Thenext day was our last full day in California, andwe celebrated it with sleeping in and headingoff to Universal Studios, Hollywood to enjoy80-degree weather and the new friendships wehad made over the past week.
10
Getting back on the plane in Los Angelesthat night was probably the hardest part of thewhole trip, but it had to be done. We took theRed-Eye back to Indianapolis, where it was ashocking -1 degrees and snowy, then a charterbus to the Blind School. Our life-changing triphad come to a close, though all of us will holdon to the experience for the rest of our lives. As my sister Sam (a junior at Bishop Ready)said, there was some very strong evidence thatthis trip was sent from God: one was that all thekids were safe, despite the constant shuffling of32 blind kids through Los Angeles; second wasthat every single student finished the parade, though not many of them were in condition; andthird, the Buckeyes won a Bowl game, which isa miracle in itself.
The OSSB Marching Band and their marching assistants…
I am so blessed that I was a part ofsomething so groundbreaking, inspiring, andtruly amazing, and it is something I will neverforget. I made friends for a lifetime, and cannow confidently say that no matter whatstruggles you are faced with, you can doanything if you just believe.
Marisa with band members relaxing after the parade.
(Marisa is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Randy(Chris) Ross and sister to twins Samantha andShelby, juniors at Bishop Ready, and Bryan, a 7thgrade student at Trinity. At Bishop Ready Marisa ison the girls’ soccer team and student council; she isin the show choir and is involved in theatre. She isalso a Eucharistic Minister and teaches SundaySchool at her parish, St. Christopher. Her motherteaches at The School for the Blind.)
