LESSONS FROM OUR AMATYC STANDARDS
Quoted from Beyond Crossroads:
Once students are in the classroom, they must apply the skills necessary for success. Students should:
• Play an active role in the learning of mathematics by applying strategies to expand their learning skills
• Create, think, and reflect about mathematics concepts
• Engage in activities to develop employability skills, such as team projects and on-time submission
• Become self-motivated learners
THEN ALONG CAME MARY…
LESSONS FROM AN EXPERT WHO WAS PRACTICALLY PERFECT IN EVERY WAY
In every problem that must be done
We will find the exponential sum of fun
To take us to infinity and beyond
And the very task we undertake
Can become a related rate
A derivative, An integral, it’s all so very critical
And soon you are maximizing your results with a spoonful of
sugar…la la la….
CALCULUS PROJECT
• In this project your group will review some important topics we
have learned this semester. Each group will create problems in context using the topics below, provide detailed symbolic solutions with accompanying graphical support for those problems and present them using business proper vehicles of communication (e.g. power points, videos, trifold boards, etc.). You must explain the mathematical reasoning behind your work in each application. You will also be graded on the level of difficulty of your application as well as its correctness. Your group will provide a word document which gives each application and solution in homework format which will be used to grade your project. You must support your work with electronically generated graphs where applicable and embed the graphs within both your word document transcript and presentation.
CALCULUS PROJECT
• Mandatory Topics (you must include one of each type in your project):
• Related Rates
• Optimization
•
• Free Choice Topics (you must choose 2 of these topics to put into your project):
• Limits and Continuity
• Average and Instantaneous Rates of Change
• Straight Line Motion of a Particle
• The Mean Value Theorem
• Differentials
• Newton’s Method
• Riemann Sums
• Area Between Two Curves

DISCUSSION
• What types of things do you do to reach this
generation of learners?
• How do you address these historically low
performing Learning Objectives in your classes?
• How many of you use projects in your classes? How
do you assess group work?
