JUST COFFEE’S FUNDRAISING PROGRAM

Just Coffee's Group Partnership Fundraising Program supplies 100% fair trade, fresh roasted premium coffee to your organization, packaged with custom labels carrying your group’s mascot, logo or original art. Not interested in a custom label? Our regular retail packaging is available as well.

This program serves the fund-raising needs of churches, school groups, sports teams, bands, environmental advocates and community projects. Fair trade sales to these organizations have helped to create more sustainable economies in coffee farming communities in the Americas and Dominican Republic.

With a customized label your non-profit organization partners with Just Coffee to create your own coffee for use in fund-raising, to build fair trade awareness and/or to celebrate your group’s identity. As your partner, we'll work with you to customize the sale to meet your needs. In the process, you'll also be partnering with the families in the coffee-growing communities that supply your coffee. You can create fair trade incomes for coffee farmers and a sense of satisfaction among your organization's supporters by offering a quality product that many people consume on a regular basis at a price that can compete with retail markets.

In response to many requests from our current partner organizations, we've arranged to work with Divine Chocolate, Rishi Tea and Choice Tea to add fair trade chocolate and tea to our Group Sales lineup. These products do not carry custom labels, but can help you expand your sales to a wider audience while creating more stable incomes for tea and cocoa farmers in Ghana, India, China and South Africa.

This booklet explains the program and addresses many commonly asked questions. Please feel free to contact our Group Partnership Program coordinator Susan for further information or to begin the process. 1 E-mail:[email protected] or Phone 608-204-9011

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What size are the bags of coffee? Custom labels are available on 12 ounce bags; 2 and 5 pound bags are available with our standard bulk labels.

Is it whole bean or ground? You can offer either or both.

How much does everything cost? Descriptions of our coffees, great fair trade teas, chocolate and cocoa powder along with prices are on pages 5-8.

How do we design a custom label? The process is detailed on page 4 How long does it take to get going? See our step by step guide on page 9

GETTING STARTED

Choose your coffee line up. Take a look at the coffees we offer on pages 5 and 6. Choose the coffees your group wants to offer with either your custom label or Just Coffee’s retail label. If you are interested in sampling the coffees, contact Susan and order the sample box. The cost is $25, which is credited to your first order. The sample box includes more than enough to brew a pot of each coffee available.

Prepare the label art and name the coffee. Some organizations use their logo or mascot, and some use original art. To give you a look at how it works we detailed everything on the next page. In addition to having your artwork on the label, you can name each roast or blend and put a message of up to 155 characters below the name of the coffee. We need from you: -label art in 300 dpi PDF or JPEG format. -a name for each coffee. (example Tiger Brew) -a message of up to 155 characters from your group. Decide on Chocolate, cocoa, and loose or bagged tea. The selections are all described in detail on pages 9-10.You can choose any or all of the items. We can supply you with information about the farmers and countries of origin for the products you select.

Optional sales support kit We have a package of support materials that includes samples of your coffee to brew, empty burlap bags used to import the unroasted coffee from the country of origin, posters about coffee production, buttons, stickers, information on the basics of fair trade coffee and even samples of green unroasted coffee beans.3

CREATE YOUR OWN LABEL

PRINTING YOUR ARTWORK Our printer is a Zebra thermal transfer printer. It is best at printing black on white images. Shades, tones, and other subtleties can get lost pretty quickly. For best results, keep the artwork high contrast, preferably just black and white without much grey. -Artwork can be up to 2.75 inches wide and 4.4 inches tall. -File needs to be a 300 dpi grey scale saved flattened as a PDF, or JPG (.JPG preferred). 4

WHOLE BEAN GROUND

Sample description of your coffee’s roast and origin. We have specific wording that will take 2-3 lines of text. For practical reasons, all labels will have this info here.

YOUR CREATIVE PLAYGROUND

NET WEIGHT 12 OUNCES

This area is 2.75 inches by 4.4 inches.

Every label has information which must be included and will appear in the same place every time. We will put this information in as we finalize the layout of your label.

Your portion of the label is the area in black. In this area groups generally put a graphic that represents them (logo, etc.), a name for the coffee (eg, Bobcat Blend) and a message of thanks or information about the group or project raising money. Send us one 300 dpi grey scale file with every-thing you want to show and say and we will do the rest.

The areas at the top and bottom of the label are our responsibility. Having the roast and origin descriptions and the WB/GR information at the top streamlines the process of sorting coffee orders. The net weight, roasted by, and organic certification information are all part of doing business in the fast paced world of fair trade, organic coffee.

Place here;-Your 300 dpi graphic-A clever name for your coffee-A message of thanks or information about your group or project.

ABOUT JUST COFFEE Just Coffee Cooperative is a worker owned coffee roaster dedicated to creating and expanding a model of trade based on transparency, equality, and human dignity. We strive to build long term relationships with small-scale coffee growers to bring you a truly incredible cup of coffee. We began roasting coffee in September of 2002 as a continuation of a ‘sister community’ relationship between folks in Madison, WI and the Autonomous Municipality of Santa Catarina in Chiapas, Mexico. We are now a cooperative of 6 worker owners and 4 employees. We roast in 70 pound batches using a Sivetz hot-air (fluid bed) roaster. We believe air roasting brings a clean full coffee flavor to the cup, highlighting the unique qualities of every bean without masking them in smoke and roasting byproducts. We believe that fair trade is a way to make economics sustainable and our world more peaceful. For more information visit www.justcoffee.coop.

A WORD ABOUT QUALITY

PRODUCER TO PRODUCER

When “quality” is discussed in the coffee industry it generally means one thing: How the coffee tastes. At Just Coffee Co-op we see quality as having two equally important pieces: Cup Quality and Relationship Quality. We believe that, without both of these components working together, true quality is impossible.CUP QUALITY- At Just Coffee we taste our coffee everyday. Coffee flavor is influenced by continent of origin, region within a continent, latitude, altitude, soil type and farming skill. Add to those factors different weather every year, and you begin to see how dynamic coffee flavor is. Our job is to find and highlight the unique qualities of each lot of beans that we buy. Every day we learn something about coffee and over the years we have accumulated knowledge of both the beans and our roaster to create a full line of delicious and acclaimed coffees. We roast in 70 pound batches on a Sivetz air roaster. Air roasting is a process that involves heated air moving through the beans to roast them, similar to a hot-air popcorn popper. This process evacuates any smoke from the roasting chamber very quickly and produces a clean ‘nothing but the coffee’ taste.RELATIONSHIP QUALITY- We work on our relationships with coffee growers every day. We have been purchasing from most of the cooperatives we work with for many years. We visit growers frequently getting to know the farmers and coop leaders and familiarize them with Just Coffee. We bring growers to visit us and organize delegations to coffee country so coffee drinkers can understand the origin of coffee and see the impact of fair trade on the lives of farmers.

In addition to building our relationships with growers, we also connect growers to each other. Our Producer to Producer (P2P) program raises money and otherwise facilitates coffee growers visiting each other to share knowledge of coffee cultivation, marketing and fair trade. 6

A firm belief in organics, with a dedication to ensure the ethical treat-ment of workers who cultivate tea, and a team of dedicated employees at Choice Organic Teas, has made the

company a modern day tea pioneer. As North America’s #1 selling exclusively certified organic tea line, we have promoted the growth and develop-ment of organic agriculture in tea estates worldwide. In 2000, Choice Organic Teas became the first tea crafter in the United States to offer Fair Trade Certified™ tea. Today, we proudly offer more varieties of Fair Trade Certified tea than any other tea company in North America, expanding awareness of a just form of trade with the devel-oping world. Choice Organic Teas are manufactured in a certified organic facility where Green-e Certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) from wind power are purchased to offset 100 percent of the facility’s electricity. And finally, we can’t help but remind you that our organic teas taste pretty amazing too.

Our mission is to offer the finest garden direct teas of each season. We work with only the most skilled artisans who have generations of tea making experience to sustain Rishi’s award

winning quality. There are no middlemen between the tea artisans and Rishi Tea. Our direct relationships with tea growers allow us to provide the best quality and flavor for the best price. Less than 2% of the world’s tea production has the hand crafted artisanal quality of Rishi Tea. We travel thousands of miles throughout the tea producing regions and taste hundreds of samples only to choose a handful of the season’s best teas for our customers. 11

1. Order a sample box. All requests for sample boxes received by close of business on Thursday of any week will ship the Friday of that same week. Sample boxes cost $25.00 which is credited to your first order.

2. As you go through the process of selecting your coffees, you can simultaneously begin the process of creating your label. The process and a sample label are laid out on page 4. There you can see what information we take care of, and what information you take care of and where it all goes, including the size and location of your artwork. You provide us with; -A name for your coffee - you can name each roast or blend. -A message from your group of up to 155 characters. -A 300 dpi, greyscale, image up to 2.75 inches wide and 3 inches tall, in PDF or JPG format. When designing and choosing your art, remember that our printer does best with high contrast black and white images. Shades and subtle tones of grey can get lost. There is a $25.00 label fee. This fee (like the sample box fee) is credited to your first order.

3. Order your sales support kit. Once you have sent us your label info and the $25.00 label set up fee, we will (upon request) send you a free sales support kit. The kit includes, samples of your custom labels on empty coffee bags, a sample of green (unroasted) coffee beans for display, a set of our ‘Coffee 101’ posters that explain the long process of getting coffee from tree to cup, buttons, stickers and a empty burlap bag in which your coffee was shipped to Just Coffee.
