Hyphens can be used to show:
a) Compound words e.g. T-shirt
b) Two or more adjectives before a noun e.g. friendly-looking man
c) Two adverbs before a noun e.g. well-known actress
d) Numbers, fractions, size and height e.g. twenty-five
cats, one-third of the pie, 10-storey building
e) Age e.g. a four-year-old girl, a 14th-century painting f) Prefixes e.g. all-purpose flour, self-employed man,
anti-aging cream
g) Phrases describing nouns e.g. all-you-can-eat buffet
star-studded gathering
