Overview About Just Festival On The Edge

Just Festival On The Edge is a curated festival, aims to share accessible, high-quality art and culture as way to explore achievable social justice and action. It provides engaging ways for those of all identities, faiths, beliefs or none to share their culture and ideas while discussing the important issues of the day. It will be held between 16 – 25 May 2015.

Just Festival

Just Festival On The Edge is created in partnership with Just Festival, a curated programme of around 300 events, across 20 venues taking place each year in August. We aim to celebrate diversity of cultures, faiths, gender-identities, sexualities, philosophies and ideas, challenge inequality and injustice and create a space for communities to engage with each other in productive dialogue.

In our fifteenth year, Just Festival features top-quality speakers, conversations, performances, film, food, exhibitions, family activities, workshops, art and much more. It has an established reputation as a fringe venue that delivers high quality events from all genres.

Vision

Just Festival On The Edge aims to share accessible, high-quality art and culture as way to explore achievable social justice and action. It provides engaging ways for those of all identities, faiths, beliefs and none to share their culture and ideas while discussing the important issues of the day. We don’t all have to agree but that is does not have to be a problem. In a world of increasing division and violence we aim to bring communities together in friendship and dialogue with art and culture as the catalyst. Just Festival On The Edge aims to foster an atmosphere of life long learning and contemplation, celebrating that differences make us wiser and similarities make us stronger. Using spaces of worship as our host venues we aim to open these areas to the general public as safe, open and judgment free places to engage with the tangible and intangible with no agenda but the act of engaging itself.

What Makes Just Festival On The Edge Unique?

As a not-for-profit organisation our priority is to encourage dialogue, community and personal growth. We want everyone who comes into contact with Just Festival On The Edge, not only enjoy an hour’s entertainment but also, take something with them to share throughout the year. Together we build a united multi-national, multi-identity, multi-belief community using the festival as a catalyst for conversation and cultural exchange.

What Are We Looking For?

We are looking for performances, films, talks, workshops, family events and exhibitions which celebrate culture, explore social justice or challenge narratives.

Performance We are looking for performances that showcase cultures from around the world, explore injustice, or pose ethical questions. We include all genres – music, theatre, dance, children's shows, poetry, and storytelling.

Just Festival 2014 brought together a phenomenal programme of performances showcasing talent and knowledge on a local, national and global scale; from exploring the Sounds of Freedom with Edinburgh Brass Band, coming of age in rural Ireland in My Name is Saoirse discovering the new voices of Soweto with Soweto Melodic Voices and Simply Soweto Encha, to the enchanting Tibetan Dance and Music by Tashi Lhunpo Monks. These events celebrated the richness of global culture, confronted unacceptable behaviour and challenged audiences to reflect on their views, beliefs and actions.

Films, Talks, Workshops and Exhibitions

We partner with a host of local charities and organisations to create an astounding array of activities for people to broaden their knowledge and skills. We want to bring communities together to make new connections, showcase their expertise and discover new talents.

Just Festival partnered with Simply Soweto Encha to produce Songs From Soweto, a fascinating documentary charting the remarkable journey of five a cappella singers from one of South Africa’s most notorious townships. Mercy Corps gave a talk about the efforts being made in Lebanon to ensure peace between Syrian refugees and their neighbouring communities. The Art Shed created an interactive experience for passers-by with everything from a pop-up miniature village to the Idea shop.
