THE WORD ON THE STREETEarler this year we asked you what you thought about our JUST Gifts and why they’re a great choice of gift – here is what you said:

STEP 3Your gift is then given to our

global neighbours in developing communities

(see page 18 for more details)

STEP 2We’ll send you a gift card

and voucher for you to pass on to your loved one

‘Many of my friends, like me, do not want any more “stuff” and much prefer that a donation be

given to a good cause rather than receive a gift.’

‘A good way of supporting people not by just giving them things but providing them with means to provide for themselves

and their family. So you build the person and the community.’

‘They are especially useful for friends overseas, as the cost of posting parcels is very high.’

‘The gifts are a great alternative for presents. We can send them to our loved ones and hopefully, from our small corner, we can

make a difference in the world.’

‘Last year we held a secret Santa – £1 for a novelty present for someone on the office and then £4 towards a JUST giving gift. At the time we were having trouble with our toilets, so it seemed

appropriate to buy a “toilet”!’

‘I know that the money is going to be well used.’

WHY YOUR GIFT MATTERSYour gift may not seem like much, but it makes a big difference to the lives of those facing the daily challenge of poverty. Here are just a couple of examples of the transformation you are bringing about through your gifts:

Dimison came to our anti-child trafficking centre in Mchinji in April. After his mother died his father re-married, and once his father also passed away he was then left with his stepmother. She didn’t let him go to school and instead made him work in their fields. Eventually his stepmother sent him away and he ended up herding cattle for a local farmer, before being found by a Salvation Army volunteer and brought to the centre.

‘I am very happy here. I can go to school and play with my friends. After school I play with my friends, and sometimes a teacher comes to teach me. Last year I started to play music at church. I saw someone at church playing the guitar, so I decided to construct one for myself. Now I

make up my own songs. One of the songs I made up says

“My mother has died, my father died, now we are alone. Being an orphan is very hard, and I am very grateful to Salvation Army for rescuing me.” Some day I want to be a musician when I grow up.’

Your gift can help kids like Dimison come to terms with their experiences and give them hope for the future. Turn to page 12 for gifts to help tackle the issue of trafficking, or page 6 for gifts helping us support children to a better future.

Mary lives in the hot, dry and dusty village of Narong’ore in northwestern Kenya. Here the community regularly suffers from a shortage of water due to a lack of rain. In recent years this has been getting even worse, with droughts becoming more common. Mary and the other women have to dig down into dry riverbeds to fetch water and are finding that they are having to dig deeper and walk further before they find it. This means it can take up to two hours to collect just 20 litres of water.Mary said:

‘We usually go to fetch water three times a day. The first time we get water so that the kids can wash themselves and go to school. At lunchtime we go there again and collect water and then start cooking and washing the clothes. In the afternoon, again we go to collect water for the animals and for cooking supper.

‘We usually use a 20-litre jerrycan to fetch water because of long distance and it is so heavy. Because of

the large size of the family we usually use all of it and then I have to go again.

‘Everything needs water. Growing needs water, washing needs water. Water is holding us back. If we have water these things will be possible for us.’

The Salvation Army has been working with the community to install a borehole, so now Mary and the others do have access to this basic and vital resource, on tap, for the very first time. Water result!

Giving water can help bring a community to life. To give water and give life with your gift go to page 4. We’re also working in this region to improve people’s access to food and support their livelihoods. For gifts that help people produce enough food for their family go to page 2, or to support our work helping people earn enough to lift themselves

above the poverty line go to page 10.

Introducing Gender-Based ViolenceMore girls were killed in the last 50 years because they were girls, than men killed in all the wars in the 20th century. There are very few places on earth where this type of abuse is more prevalent than in Pakistan. Claimed to be the third most dangerous country for women, Pakistan endures prolific incidents of ‘honour’ killings, acid attacks, child marriages and domestic violence. Nearly two thirds of women in Pakistan suffer from gender-based violence. Rarely are they afforded justice. It penetrates the ‘public’ and ‘private’ spheres, the lower and upper classes. Few are untouched. The continuum of violence begins from birth, in a society where sons are preferred, and can end in death for those who bring ‘dishonour’.The Salvation Army is starting to address this issue through a new programme to educate around 3,000 women and girls about their legal rights, means of enforcement, and access to justice. For years we have been tackling gender inequality through our GENERATION programme and dealing with the exploitation of women and children (both boys and girls) who have been trafficked. However, the programme in Pakistan is the first time we have tried specifically to respond to the issue of gender-based violence. If the programme is successful, hopefully this will just be the beginning of our work to bring freedom and equality to women who are exploited or mistreated just because they are a woman.

‘If you are a woman, that is your first

disqualification to being human.’

A BIT ABOUT USWe want to see a life with dignity, equality for all people and a world without poverty and injustice.

We work with developing communities to resource, empower and support them to defeat poverty, tackle injustice and enable them to build a better life and future.

We have five main focus areas – WATERSHED, GENERATION, FARM, ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING and EMBRACE. Through these programmes, we are able to use our expertise to respond to the needs of communities in the best way we can and ensure that funds raised are used in the most effective way possible.

You can find out more about our work by visiting www.salvationarmy.org.uk/id or calling the office on 020 7367 4777 and requesting a copy of our DEVELOP newsletter.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

One of the key aspects of our work is that we empower individuals and communities to combat poverty themselves and enhance their own opportunities to bring about change. That means that we believe that projects should be identified and owned by the local communities who will benefit from it.

As such, we always use the money either for your specific chosen gift or for

something else in the same area of work. The flexibility that this provides is invaluable

in ensuring that the communities that we work with retain ownership of the project and get

exactly what they need.
