Living in Andover, it is hard to miss the display of aircraft activity that intrigues us on a daily basis. Children especially are always fascinated by the array of helicopters and planes that fly over every day.

But did you know that just a few miles from Andover, in Middle Wallop, is the fascinating Museum of Army Flying which is home to a unique collection of aviation history?

If you and your family are looking for something different, something choc a bloc with history and heritage, then the Museum of Army Flying with its history of flying soldiers from the early balloon kites and gliders of the late nineteenth century to the present day and modern attack helicopters is for you! The Museum is packed full of helicopters, aeroplanes, gliders in authentic dioramas as well as many other artefacts that they can explore and marvel at close up! There are simulators and real helicopters that children can actually get into as well as trails and much more.

The Museum also gives a fascinating and imaginative glimpse of „soldiers in the air‟ and life on the home front. There is an amazing new display about recent opera-tions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Sierra Leone, including Apache pilot‟s equipment. This is all situ-ated right next to an active airfield where pilots are trained every weekday.

As well as opportunities for schools to visit, including a 1940‟s house, there are guided tours and activities to keep everyone captivated by this wonderful display of history! The Museum has also opened a new Observation and Interpretation Area, which extends from the restaurant, providing outdoor seating and a balcony which provides visitors with spectacular views over Middle Wallop Airfield. This is great for anyone wanting to take photographs or simply sit and enjoy some refreshment in the open air! There are some real treasures at the Museum with some fantastic „must see‟ aircraft such as the Sopwith Pup, the Hamilcar, the Auster AOP 9, the Lynx and the HueyCobra. Did you know, The HueyCobra was the world‟s first helicopter designed for the attack role and was first used in active service in 1967 during the Vietnam War!

As well as family days out, the Museum also caters for school trips from Key Stage 1 and up-wards, as well as non-school groups such as the Scouts and Guides communities.

There are resource packs avail-able using the contact details below. Whether you‟re a parent, teacher or an enthusiast, there really is something for everyone!

There is just SO much to see and do at the Museum of Army Flying that it really has to be on your list of Days Out this Summer - and it‟s right on your doorstep too! As well as all this fascinating history, there is a cinema, simulators, rifle ranges, a shop, children‟s centre, picnic area and plenty of free parking. And if you‟re looking for something to do over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the Museum will be host to a large military vehicle display - we look forward to seeing you!

The Facts One activity, above all others, has been scientifically proven to bring out all these abilities. Learning a musical instrument, besides being enjoyable in itself, helps your child to develop all these skills. In other words, learning music gives your child a better start in life. Independent studies in Britain, Switzerland, Hungary and USA have all reached the same conclusion - Making Music Makes You Smarter - the experience actually increases the child‟s learning in the other disciplines and subjects. Better results from schoolwork are not the only benefits that children gain from learning music. Co-ordination and memory improve and practice enhances self-discipline. Social skills are helped by working in groups, where team-work and interper-sonal relationships are paramount. These are the very skills that employers look for in later life. The experience of performing teaches children to develop individual responsibility and professional standards which equips them for later life. What‟s more, these observations don‟t just apply to children! According to research, music can relieve stress, improve commu-nication AND increase efficiency.

Wouldn’t you like YOUR child to have:

♪ Greater reading ability

♪ A better understanding of maths and

sciences

♪ Improved fluency in English and for-

eign languages

Better Academic Skills ...

♪ The ability to work as a team member

♪ Better time management

♪ A greater reasoning capacity

♪ Improved problem solving abilities

Skills that will help them later in life ...

♪ A better memory

♪ Artistic ability and neatness

♪ The ability to cope with stress

The ability to enjoy life to the full ...

As a caring parent, you‟d naturally hope

your child would possess all these attrib-

utes. In fact your child probably does, but

without nurturing, these qualities are likely

to remain dormant.

Music makes you smarter...

SPOTLIGHT ON ...

Clive’s Rock School!

Aspiring young stars from Andover are over the moon with Clive‟s Rock and Pop School which has just celebrated it‟s 2nd birthday in the town! Students from as young as 7 learn to play guitar, drums, bass or keyboard and also get the chance to play rock and pop songs from across the decades in each and every lesson! And every few months they get the chance to perform in live gigs too! Sharon McCarthy, School Manager, said “The unique and simple Easylearn system gets the students involved right from the start and really lets them play the songs that they want to play in a rock and pop band environment from lesson one ... traditional one-to-one lessons don‟t give you that opportunity and this method really makes sure that their initial enthusiasm is captured and encouraged straightaway. Anyone with a child aged 7

or over should give us a call if they are interested in finding out more about our lessons”.

Classes are held weekly in Andover, Amesbury and Salisbury and the Andover school also has an adult class for parents who need to blast away the stress! The Rock Schools in the local towns have also been raising an amazing amount of money for local charities. The Andover school have recently raised money for the Jamie G Trust and the Salisbury and Amesbury schools have been raising money for the Stars Appeal at Salisbury District Hospital. The lessons are unique, educational, rewarding and above all FUN! Anyone is welcome to have a completely free taster which can be booked online at clivesmusic.com or call 01256 465815.

The Long Overdue Theatre School have opened up some new spaces in their

term time classes based at Harrow Way School after the wonderful success of their recent Easter School. Easter School saw 50 pupils take part in a week of Easter fun. The under 7‟s had a week of magical adventures based around the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which resulted in a performance to parents. The 7-16 year olds were joined by a vast array of industry professionals running exciting workshops treating them to the tricks of their trade. There were singers, dancers, actors, directors and the pupils produced music videos, cd‟s and radio plays. One of the highlights of the week was being joined for the day by Britain‟s Got Talent finalists including a duo from Spelbound! Great fun was had by all and this summer we are looking at doing it all again as we work towards putting on a performance in a week and we are joined for the week by West End musical theatre star Tom Muggeridge from the musical Chicago. Tom‟s week with us was so successful last year his back to do it all again this year! Excitement in our term time classes of late has included a workshop from top children‟s casting director Jo Hawes (who casts for all the West End musicals like Oliver and The Sound of Music) and an interactive tour around BBC television centre which saw our pupils on screen.

Rookwood home to ‘Teacher of the Year’ A Music Teacher from Rookwood School, Andover, was „stunned‟ this week as she beat off stiff competition to scoop Hampshire County‟s coveted „Teacher of the Year‟ Award. Miss Pauline Evans, a music teacher of thirty years, was nominated for the prestigious award by her pupils at Rookwood who described her as „amazing‟, „inspiring‟ and „lots of fun‟ when they wrote to the judges. Miss Evans, who was inspired to teach by a University lecturer and by her own school music teacher, whom she described as „fantastic‟, was overjoyed at the accolade. “I do what I do because I love it so much! I recognize I‟m very fortunate to do a job I‟m passionate about. There was never any question regarding what I‟d be when I grew up – my career was always going to be focused on music.” Mrs Louise Whetstone, Headmistress, who accompanied Miss Evans to the award ceremony, was absolutely delighted: “This is an incredible achievement and one that is richly deserved by Miss Evans. Her passion for music, her dedication to the pupils she teaches and her unstinting commitment to Rookwood have culminated in an award that she truly deserves. All the staff, pupils and parents are very proud of Miss Evans and we send her our congratula-tions wholeheartedly.”

Milestones is packed full of the things that ordi-nary people used in the past. Those people had to go to work, wash their clothes, eat, sleep, and have fun exactly as we do today - but the things they used were sometimes very different from what we use now. Milestones gives us an idea of what it might have been like to live in the past. And our ancestors would recog-nise the things here because they are the actual things they used. No doubt you will recognise some of them. Maybe you still have them! Take part as a family and dress up in Victorian clothes,! There are activity boxes with games for you to play, science interactives, activity sheets and I-spy trails and a play post-office for under 5s.

Don‟t forget, you can get around the park on their free road train or get closer with a round trip on the rail train. Best of all, you‟ll be playing a big part in helping to save these animal wonders of the natural world as Marwell is a conservation charity running projects to conserve species and habitats, both here in Hampshire and around the world.

New to the park this year are 8 new species of reptile in Cold Blooded Corner as well as a fantastic home for the cheetahs called Savannah Tracks. This mimics their natural habi-tat and allows you to get great angles on the new walkway or covered outpost. You can even test your speed against this fastest land mammal on earth on the new running track!

Everyone loves a meerkat and there‟ll be exciting news coming soon about the meerkats at Marwell.

In 2004 the Forest Edge Kart Club moved to its new location at Barton Stacey near Andover. The track was designed and constructed from scratch and provides more challenging corners for the direct drive karts and a long 300 metre back straight for the gear box karts to really show off their speed.

We run the first weekend of the month with practice on some third Saturday‟s in the month when we run sessions for beginners.

The Lets go Karting sessions are available for children aged 8 years old (over 130 cm tall) to 15/16 years. The session is for 7 minutes and cost £10.00 with a £30.00 refundable deposit.

We supply kart, helmet, suit and gloves. It is a great way to introduce children to Karting. To book ring 01258 451097.

Remember, June's meeting is the Southern Championships and July will be the Help for Heroes Festival!

Join the Girls from ANDOVER! 2011 is a very ambitious year for Tesco and Cancer Research UK‟s Race for Life. Every two minutes someone is diagnosed with cancer, and that‟s why this year we need more women than ever before to join the girls at events across the UK. A fifth of Cancer Research UK‟s income is generated through Race for Life, so our goal is to recruit as many women as possible to raise as much as we can towards our life saving research. Here in Hampshire, we are hoping that 3640 women of all ages, shapes and sizes will come together on Sunday 12th June, to turn the Garrison Ground Winchester into a sea of pink, that over 4000 women will help us to do the same at Down Grange Sports Complex Basingstoke on 26th June and also that a further 4000 ladies will come together on 3rd July at Hudson‟s Field, Salisbury! Rachel White, Cancer Research UK‟s Race for Life event manager in Winchester, said: “Race for Life in the South is a unique celebration of sisterhood and pride. The atmos-phere is amazing, with local women from all walks of life coming together to make a positive difference to people affected by cancer. They motivate and inspire each other to complete the course with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun. Lea Blake, Event Manager for Basingstoke continued, “In 2011, we hope more women than ever before will take part. We need our Race for Life regulars, as well as women who took part years ago, to join together with many new faces to help save more lives.” Every year, thousands of women come together to help raise money for life-saving research into all forms of cancer. But this year, there is a problem because, with just 5 weeks to go until the event day in Winchester, 7 weeks until Basingstoke Race for Life and 8 weeks to go until event day in Salisbury, there are still over 7000 places to fill. So we are issuing an urgent rallying call to the „missing‟ mums, daughters, sisters and friends of Hampshire. We hope local women will hear our plea and register as soon as possible to secure their place in the UK‟s largest women only fundraising series. Kate Shimmell, Event Manager for Salisbury added: “By entering Race for Life, and help-ing to fund Cancer Research UK‟s crucial work, people in the region could make a big difference to cancer patients here on their doorstep. One-in-three people in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease at some stage in their lives. But the good news is that more people are beating it than ever before. Cancer Research UK‟s work is at the heart of that progress. By helping to raise money through Race for Life, our supporters are turning hope into reality.” Race for Life helps Cancer Research UK to support the work of scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to beating cancer by understanding its causes and investigat-ing how best to prevent, diagnose and treat it.
