Just To Keep You Going... Maths

Today we’re going to have a look at some line graphs. Line graphs are useful for showing how something has changed or is changing over time. You may remember drawing our own line graphs before Christmas, all about different climates around the world. Don’t forget to Babble Gabble about each graph before you answer the questions!

Have a go at answering the questions on these:

1. Population Graph 1a) What was the population at the end of 1980? 1b) What was the population at the end of 2000? 1c) Which decade had the least population increase? 1d) Can you accurately tell the population in 1991? Why? 1e) Complete the sentence: The steeper the line, the ________ the population is increasing 2. Rainfall Graph 2a) How many millimetres of rain falls in London in May? 2b) Which months are the driest in Manchester? 2c) Which is the wettest month in London? 2d) How many months does it rain more than 50mm in London compared with Manchester? 2e) How much more rainfall is there in Manchester than London in December? 2f) It is 12th August and 50mm or rain has already fallen. Does this mean it won’t rain again until September? 3. Distance/Time Graph 3a) How many hours is the flight? 3b) How many miles is the flight from London to New York? 3c) After four hours, how many more miles are left to travel? 3d) How long does it take to fly the final 1000 miles? 3e) Estimate how far the plane has left to travel after five and a half hours. 3f) Estimate how far the plane has travelled after two and a half hours. Hungry for more graphs and charts to Babble Gabble your way through? Click the link to see all sorts of infographics and graphs about The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings!

Can you find the one bunny that doesn't have a twin?

Can you find the mouse hidden among the mushrooms?

Can you find the four leaf clover hidden among the pigs?

Can you find the chick hidden among the bunnies?

Puzzle of the Day Today’s puzzles get a page of their own and they need it as you’re going to need to look very closely at the images to spot things. These images are all by a Hungarian artist called Gergely Dudás. You’ll find lots more of his work online if you enjoy these.

English

Gandalf is quite pleased with how he has found the positive in some of the situations he suggested. How did you do? Do you think your sentences would persuade someone to join the quest?

There are hungry trolls hiding in the countryside, waiting to eat you!

There are lively giants who would love to have you over for dinner!

If you aren’t good at riddles, Gollum will eat you.

You could meet interesting little creatures who love to play games!

Mirkwood is a creepy forest, full of giant spiders that like to wrap visitors in webs.

A chance to study the unusual wildlife of Middle Earth, who will welcome you with eight open

arms.

The only way to escape the wood-elf king is to take a terrifying ride in a barrel along the river.

Take a thrilling barrel ride on the Forest River and see the sights.

Smaug is an alarming dragon who broods over his treasure and breathes fire at anything in his

path.

A rare chance to see an endangered firedrake dragon in its sparkling natural habitat.

How did you get on with writing the

first paragraph of Gandalf’s

advertisement?

Here’s a checklist

to help you edit

your own work:

Here are Gandalf’s suggestions for the English task as well as the answers to the maths. Those puzzles were tricky! Well done if you worked them out correctly.

Puzzle of the Day—Picture Equations We hope your remembered BIDMAS when solving these!

Did you spot that there is only one pack of fries on the final line but two in the row above?

So 5 + 1 x 10 = 15

Similar but harder to spot—did you see that the lady is holding a yellow bag in the top row?

So 8 + 5 x 2= 18

Hardest one—that robot is wearing boots and is holding 3 bottles!

So 5 + 21 x 2 = 47

Maths

How did you get on with your bar charts? Hopefully they looked something like these:

1) Which might Larry want to present to his boss? Why?

We think that Larry would prefer to present graph 1 to his boss as it looks like his sales have increased more sharply over the 8 months that he has been working.

2) Which graph would support his boss’s view that he is lazy and should be sacked? Why?

We think that graph 2 supports Larry’s boss’s view as it makes it clear that Larry’s sales have not actually increased much at all. This is particularly true as the graph starts in January (when you would expect low sales) and takes us through to August, which is the height of summer!

How did you get on with your dwarf cake eating graphs? We’d love to see some beautifully presented exam-ples for our gallery this week. Hopefully you realised that the smaller the scale interval, the bigger the per-ceived difference between the bars.

Now you know this, always think carefully about the scale used on a graph—they can be used to bend the
