Multidisciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre (MRCC) Report-2016-2017
The Multi-disciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre (MRCC) has a full-fledged Central Instrumentation
Centre(CIC) that serves as a hub for multi-disciplinary research and the E-Learning Centre facilitates staff and students
to access online research content. Software like SPSS, R and Minitab help scholars in Statistical analysis of their research
results.
Activities/ Events
• The College has been awarded three UGC Minor Research Projects. The Projects have been awarded to Ms.Kavitha
Dhanraj & Ms.Meherunissa of the Department of Psychology and Dr.Madhana Rekha of the Centre for Women‟s
Studies.
• Seed Capital Assistance Scheme for faculty and Student‟s Project Grant Introduced.
• New guidelines for award of financial assistance for research work drafted during the year and 18 faculty have been
awarded financial assistance during the year.
Activities/Events:
1.The Multi-disciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre (MRCC)
organized a competition titled “Idea Factory” on the 20th July 2016. The
Competition was a call for Original Ideas, Inventions and Innovations.
The students enthusiastically participated in the competitions. They built
models, prototypes, conducted surveys, created new and innovative
designs. A total of 32 students from the forenoon session and 46 students
from the afternoon session participated in the competition. Cash prizes
were awarded under the arts, science and commerce streams for the best
ideas and models.
2.A Workshop of the MRCC titled „Research Projects – Do‟s and Dont‟s
was held for faculty on 16th September 2016. The workshop addressed
the faculty on the modalities of applying for research projects from
UGC, DBT, DST, ICSSR and other private funding agencies. Dr.Selvam,
National Professor of Eminence, IIT Delhi chaired the sessions. This was
followed by a session on checking of research proposals prepared on
26.10.2016. Dr.Usha Antony, Professor, Centre for food technology,
Department of Biotechnology, Anna University was the resource person.
3.An intensive four day workshop on SPSS was conducted. The program
was conducted from 13th – 17th March 2017 for M. Phil and Ph.D.
students. Dr.Ravanan, Head, Department of Statistics, Presidency
College, Chennai was the resource person.

Activities/Events
From 2017-2018 the Seed Capital Assistance Scheme of the management is being implemented and
Seven (7) faculty members have been sanctioned research projects.
Research Project Grants of Undergraduate and Postgraduate students has been sanctioned from the
year 2017-2018. There was an overwhelming response from the students and the following parameters
were set for selection of projects
1.Innovative / Socially relevant research topic
2.Feasibility of the proposal
3.Methodology adopted
4.Output to society
5.Confidence in presentation
19 undergraduate research projects (11 from forenoon and 8 from afternoon) and eight (8) postgraduate
research projects have been sanctioned
Financial assistance for research work for 35 faculty has been awarded.
From this academic year only papers published in Journals approved by the UGC are awarded
incentives after scrutiny by an internal committee.
Online research database EBSCO has been purchased. Over 3000 peer reviewed journals are available
for use by students and faculty and the database is accessible through all computers in the college.
A hands-on training Workshop for the Science faculty on the use of the High
Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was held on Wednesday, the 30th
August 2017.
A programme on Patents was held on 21st September 2017. The resource person for
this programme was Mr.Ajith, Deputy Controller of Patents and design at the Patents
office, Intellectual Property Rights Office, Guindy
A programme on Copyrights was held on 22nd November 2017. The resource person
for this programme was Dr. Feroz Ali, the Department of Industry Policy and
Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry Chair on Intellectual
Property Rights (IPR) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
A special lecture on the topic Mathematics and Research – An Insight for the
undergraduate mathematics students was held on 7th December 2017.
Dr.Ramanujam, Professor, Institute of Mathematical Sciences was the resource
person for the lecture.
A competition titled „Idea factory‟ was held on 5th of February for the forenoon
session and 6th of February for the afternoon session. The Competition was a call for
Original Ideas, Inventions and Innovations. The students enthusiastically
participated in the competitions. They had built models, prototypes, conducted
surveys, created new and innovative designs. A total of 58 students took part in the
competitions and won cash prizes.

Activities/Events
Through the Seed Capital Assistance Scheme,this year two faculty have been sanctioned
research projects
Student Research grant has been awarded to 12 undergraduate research projects and 4
postgraduate research projects.
Financial assistance for research work to 20 faculty has been awarded.
From this academic year research papers published in Scopus indexed journals are
awarded the highest incentive immaterial of the impact factor.
A Seminar on Publishing in Scopus Indexed Journals – An insight was held on
26.11.2018. Ms.Rahila Nahid, Publishing Content Manager, Reed Elsevier was the
resource person.
A demonstration to faculty on the working of FTIR was conducted on 30.08.2018.
Two faculty members were sent for a short term skill development training program on
IPR conducted by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management,
Nagpur run by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of
Commerce and Industry, Government of India for 6 days starting from 29th October 2018
to 3rd November 2018

4 faculty projects under the Seed Capital Assistance Scheme have been
sanctioned during the year 2019-2020
17 Student Research Grants, 11 undergraduate and 6 postgraduate have
been sanctioned.
Financial assistance for research work to 23 faculty members have been
awarded during the academic year.
From this year the college has started subscribing to SCOPUS online
research database. The database can be accessed by all staff and students
through intranet.
Remote Scopus IDs for accessing entire SCOPUS journals by faculty
were created during the pandemic
To kindle young minds to think, a competition titled „Idea factory‟
was held on 3rd of August, 2019.
An Awareness program on Intellectual property rights was conducted
in the Library hall on 17th December,2019.
An online workshop on “Scopus” was organized by MRCC in
collaboration with ELSEVIER for the faculty members on 3rd and 4th
February. The speaker was Dr.Subhra Dutta, Customer Consultant,
ELSEVIER.
A program on “Exploring Consultancy Avenues” was held on 26th
February, 2020 which was organized by the Department of
Commerce (FN) & Department of Business Studies (AN) in
collaboration with Multi-disciplinary Research and Consultancy
Centre. The speaker was Dr.Paul Jayakar, Director, M/s.CNK
Associates, Chartered Accountants.
A lecture on “Scientific indicators to measure research output” was
organized on the occasion of National Science Day on 28th February,
2020 in collaboration with MRCC. The speaker was Dr.Faizunnisa
Syed, Assistant Professor, Department of Library and Information
science, University of Madras.
A Webinar on “Role of Scopus analytics in research workflow” was
organized 27th, April,2020 where Dr.Subhra Dutta, Customer
Consultant, ELSEVIER.
Activities/Events
It was decided to carry out research through online means during this Pandemic year
2020-2021, Two faculty projects were sanctioned projects under the Seed Capital
Assistance Scheme.
12 Student Research Grants have also been sanctioned. The Students Research
Projects sanctioned by the Management in the year 2020-21 have all been
successfully completed. Incentives are given to papers published in Journals in the
UGC-CARE list.
Financial assistance for research work for 25 faculty have been awarded this year
New internal members were inducted into MRCC to infuse new thoughts and ideas.
The college had subscribed to the N-list, Delnet, SCOPUS online research database
and remote access to the database was given to faculty for their research work as well
as for publishing research papers during the Pandemic.
Students enthusiastically participated in the online Idea factory Competition, a
platform for Original Ideas, Inventions and Innovations, Models, prototypes and
designs.
An initiative was taken to create Vidwan IDs by all the faculty members of our
college so that we can be a part of the web-based Research Information Management,
IRINS, developed by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre.

A Webinar on “Role of Scopus analytics in research workflow” was
organised on 27th April 2020 where Dr.Subhra Dutta, Customer
Consultant, ELSEVIER was the resource person.
A webinar on “Publishing in High impact factor journals” was organised
for our faculty on 18th May, 2020.The speaker was Dr.Fazlunnisa Syed,
Assistant Professor, Department of Library and Information science,
University of Madras.
MRCC in collaboration with Central Library of our college on 9th
June,2020 organised a Webinar on “Applying for Government and Non-
government research projects.” by Dr.S.Amilan, Professor & Head,
Department of Commerce, Pondicherry University.
The IPR Cell conducted an IPR programme on Development and Careers
in Intellectual and Property Rights.
