Getting a handwritten letter nowadays is extraor- dinary, as people often do not take the time to write letters in an age when emailing, texting and tweet- ing have revolutionized the way people communicate with one another. However, writing notes, letters and exclamations of love can be more intimate, especial- ly on Valentine’s Day. In France, love letters are called billet doux. The French are known to be romantics at heart, but that doesn’t mean people from all over the globe can’t put pen to paper to express their feelings. Handwrit- ten letters are often seen as thoughtful gestures, espe- cially when those letters are expressing intimate senti- ment. Here are some guide- lines for writing a love note or letter. • Visit a stationery store and find a nice piece of sta- tionery and envelope to use for the letter. If you are put- ting forth the effort to create a beautiful, handwritten let- ter, you can add to the expe- rience by selecting a fine paper on which to write. There are many different types of paper, including some that are embossed. . • Brush up on your pen- manship. A letter will be rendered useless if it isn’t legible. Therefore, practice penmanship before sitting down to write your letter. • Have a picture of the person to whom you will be addressing the letter near- by. This may provide some inspiration. • Jot down ideas on a piece of scrap paper. Think about how your romantic partner makes you feel and the qualities he or she pos- sesses that you find appeal- ing, and use concrete exam- ples why you love and care for this person. • Write a rough draft of the letter and be sure to proofread it for misspell- ings and grammatical errors. • Always write from the heart and be sincere in what you say. Try to call out spe- cific examples that recall particularly fond memories. • Write your final copy of the letter on the good paper. Make sure it is neat and legible. Be sure you date it because it is likely the note will be saved. • You may want to wait a day or two before sending the letter to be sure the sen- timents you expressed are truly what you want to say. If so, mail or hand deliver the note. Love letters and other handwritten notes are quickly becoming a thing of the past, as technolo- gy has largely replaced pen and paper. Yet, those who want to add a special touch to any occasion can choose to write a letter and make a lasting impression. Come mid-February, florist delivery trucks can be seen making the rounds through neighbor-hoods all across the coun-try. Such trucks are trans-porting thousands of bou-quets, plants and other flo-ral arrangements that serve as gifts on Valentine’s Day.

According to the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, florists take in around $400 million in revenue on Valentine’s Day. Roses may be the most popular flower come Valentine’s Day, but many other blooms find their way into the hearts of excited celebrants as well.

Flowers can be used to convey love, friendship, compassion, and desire. In Victorian times, flowers were given specific mean-ings because only a few exotic flowers were read-ily available, and many of these meanings have with-stood the test of time. Giv-ing a type of flower that signifies you just want to

be friends may not bode well for a relationship when the recipient was hoping for more. As a result, it pays to understand the sub-tle meaning of flowers to make gift-giving easier.

The Society of Ameri-can Florists has compiled the following list of flow-er meanings from vari-ous sources. But in spite of these meanings, keep in mind you can always work with a florist to design a personal arrangement that speaks directly to that spe-cial someone this Valen-tine’s Day.Amaryllis: dramaAnemone: fragilityApple Blossom: promiseAster: contentmentAzalea: abundanceBachelor Button: anticipa-tionBegonia: deep thinkingCamellia: graciousnessCarnation: pink: gratitude red: flashy striped: refusal white: remembrance

cretion of the recipient.

EtiquetteSending cards requires

a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you’re taking the time to send a greeting

card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection.

Be sure your card list is continually updated with new addresses and contact information. Ensure greet-ing cards will arrive on time by mailing them out a week or two before the spe-cial day.

Address cards by hand

and sign them personally. Although desktop printers can make fast work of card mailings, writing things out by hand is a special touch that indicates you care. Per-sonal greeting cards for close friends and family members may also deserve an extra special touch, like including a custom message or a photograph.
