In spite all the obsessive product talk, we never miss an opp ortunity to take in the scenery around us. We beautiful dont meet another sou l for days. As we travel on, I becom e aware of just how mu ch good these quiet days in the vast, wild hig hlands have done me. Eve ryday life seems so far away. But now eve ry kilometre brings me back closer to reality. The slow return of the forests to the far no rth of Scotland reminds me of another iss ue which has been occ upying much of my time over the last few months. No matter how enthusia stic we get about our pro ducts, we have a responsibility to the nat ural environment to up hold. In 2010, Jack Wolfskin went carbon-n eutral. Although we con tinually endeavour to reduce CO em issions across the com 2 pany with a raft of measures, its not possi ble to completely avo id all carbon emissions. We have decide d to compensate for thi s by planting trees. In addition to energy conservation measures to reduce our own emissions, the carbon balance sheet also includ es the transport logistics of our products from manufacturing all the way through to retail. In 2010 we organ ised 100 hectares of per manent reforestation. This involves an equ al three-way split betwe en South Africa, Nicaragua and Germany as this mix minimizes any possible damage in the event of loc alised forest fires, extrem e winds or beetle infestation. In addition to this new measure, over the yea rs we have done much to reduce our im pact on the environm ent. For example, we use intelligent logisti cs systems to optimise our transport networks, we have system atically reduced our con sumption of primary energy sources as far as possible and have made a firm commitment to using green energy across the company. We intend to continue to im prove our commitment to the environment and nature. For more information, visit ww w.jack-wolfskin.com. Lets start with the basics! In extreme situations, 100 % weather protection is absolutely crucial, of course. However, when you factor in your well-being and physical performance, functional first layer clothing is also of vital importance. The more performance-orientated and breathable shell jackets and soft shells become, the more important it is to equip yourself with a first layer that is right for the job. Our base layers and functional underwear do one thing superbly well: they wick moisture rapidly and efficiently away from the body, shifting it to the outer layers in the clothing system, through which it can escape and evaporate. This produces a noticeable improvement in wear comfort, particularly when wearing a waterproof shell on top. It also means you do not cool down as quickly, thus prolonging your physical performance by a significant margin. In short: A technical layering system is most effective, of course, when all of the component garments in the system are functional from the first layer to the outer layer. And since your base layer or functional underwear come first in the system, they also get pole position in our catalogue! In theory, a base layer made from 100% synthetic fibres provides the best wicking performance. However, since many people prefer the feel of natural fibres next to their skin, we set ourselves the task of finding a blend of fibres with the natural texture of cotton and near-perfect functional attributes. Both NATURE JERSEY Q.M.C. and NATURE PIQU Q.M.C. (used for our polo shirts) are hybrid fabrics made from certified organic cotton and polyester (more than 50 % recycled). Both fabrics incorporate Q.M.C. polyester fibres for active moisture management (see page 31), which means they blot up sweat and wick it away rapidly. The fabrics represent the perfect symbiosis of natural and synthetic fibres.

THE

LESS MOISTURE, MORE WEAR COMFORT Q.M.C.Q.M.C. stands for Quick Moisture Control. Q.M.C. fibres have a special structure that gives them a larger surface area. This means they blot up moisture (sweat) more effectively and diffuse it over a larger surface. This in turn means the fabric dries noticeably faster, as the moisture can evaporate more quickly. Since these attributes are ideal for sweat-inducing activities, practically all of our base layers and the entire range of DRYARN PRO underwear use fabrics with Q.M.C. fibres.

FUNCTIONAL UNDERWEAR

THE LAYERING SYSTEMThe layering system for functional clothing is normally composed of three layers, each of which has a specific task to perform. 1. First layer = Functional underwear or base layer. Wicks sweat away from the skin and helps prevent undercooling. 2. Second layer = Insulation. Depending on personal preference and the type of activity, it can consist of a functional outdoor shirt and/ or a fleece. 3. Third layer = Weather protection. Usually a soft shell and/or a TEXAPORE shell, depending on weather conditions.

DRYARN PRO

DRYARN PRO UNDERWEAR FOUR-SEASON FUNCTIONALITYOur DRYARN PRO underwear was developed for all-season, allactivity wear. In medium temperatures it is also ideal for use as a base layer worn next to the skin. The EYELET Q.M.C. SILVER fabric was developed specifically for the job. It has a bi-polar knit structure: The smooth, soft inner surface of the fabric consists of polypropylene and polyester fibres, which absorb little moisture themselves but wick it rapidly away from the skin. The Q.M.C. fibres of the face fabric have a special eyelet structure, which creates an artificially enlarged surface area for faster evaporation of sweat. This means the underwear dries fast. EYELET Q.M.C. SILVER also has permanent antimicrobial properties, with integrated silver ions limiting the formation of bacteria and associated unpleasant odours in the fabric. The effect is natural, durable, applies exclusively to the fabric itself and does not work directly on the skin. The antibacterial function conforms to all current international standards and has been found to pose no risk to human health.

ALPINISMMany people regard alpinism as the royal discipline amongst outdoor sports. When you are climbing and walking on rugged high mountain terrain and across glaciers, your clothing has to be precision engineered to cope with the challenges. In the alpine environment, durability, breathability, freedom of movement and light weight are high priority attributes. This is why our ALPINISM apparel uses extremely breathable, hard wearing, lightweight fabrics. Kinetic stretch fabrics incorporated at specific areas allow us to keep the cutlines neat and close-fitting a desirable attribute on mountain terrain. Critical wear points are additionally reinforced to guard against damage caused by contact with sharp scree and rocks. And because it is often the little things that make a big difference, the detailing is also alpine-specific, e.g. the jacket pockets are raised to ensure easy access when wearing a climbing harness or rucksack waist belt. The ALPINISM line benefits from constant feedback from pro alpinists and experienced mountaineers, who use JACK WOLFSKIN products as work wear on a daily basis. These are the key attributes of the apparel in our ALPINISM line: A minimum weight, maximum functionality A super-breathable fabrics A cropped, close-fitting cuts with kinetic stretch freedom of movement A alpine-specific detailing Our ALPINISM products utilise the following fabric technologies: fully waterproof, breathable and windproof fully windproof, breathable and water repellent extremely breathable, kinetic stretch, wind resistant and water repellent TEXAPORE jackets:.......................pages Soft shells:......................................pages Windproof:.....................................pages Pants:...............................................pages Footwear: .......................................pages Rucksacks:......................................pages 46-59 60- 65 66- 67 68 - 73 74 - 77 78 - 85

There is now a weather protection fabric that is air permeable, too the new innovation is called TEXAPORE AIR O3+. Previously, the major limiting factor for waterproof and breathable fabrics was their lack of air permeability. Even though we have spent the last 25 years constantly improving the performance of our weather protection fabrics, this limitation was always something of a thorn in our side. With TEXAPORE AIR O3+ technology, we have now achieved a major breakthrough. See next page for more about the fabric technology and its advantages.

THE

BASICS

45

TEXAPORE AIR 03+THE ADVANTAGES THE TECHNOLOGY

The air permeable structure of the weather protective membrane allows the continuous exchange of damp air from within the clothing with fresh air from the outside. This convection process is accelerated by movement and the resultant pump effect, and by the action of the wind. In practical terms, this means that the more you move the more breathable your jacket becomes. We call it dynamic breathability. Naturally, TEXAPORE AIR O3+ is also waterproof and windproof and shifts moisture vapour through the breathable membrane in the conventional way. However, while the moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) of standard TEXAPORE fabrics remains static, with TEXAPORE AIR O3+ we have developed a weather protection fabric whose breathability rating actually increases with the level of activity!

The TEXAPORE AIR O3+ membrane is constructed in a completely new way. It can be compared to a thatched roof construction, which also allows air to pass through while remaining waterproof and windproof. TEXAPORE AIR O3+ is a very light 3-layer laminate, consisting of an outer fabric, a membrane and a lining. Even in the resting state, it has a very high moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) of 30,000 g/m 2/24 h, which increases as activity intensifies. The air permeability measures 0.5 l/m2/s. Like all TEXAPORE fabrics, TEXAPORE AIR remains fully windproof.

DEVIATOR JACKET MENThis is the jacket that goes to extremes. The DEVIATOR JACKET epitomises our zero tolerance approach to alpine apparel engineering: maximum performance at the minimum possible weight. In addition to the classic waterproof and windproof performance of TEXAPORE, the jacket delivers a level of climate comfort hitherto only found in a top quality soft shell. Its all down to the state of the art fabric. TEXAPORE AIR O3+ represents a significant breakthrough in weather protection technology. The waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane of the fabric has an innovative new structure that also makes it air permeable. In simple terms, this means that normal movement causes warm, moist air to be pumped through the pores in the membrane, while fresh air flows back inside, a process that increases as physical activity becomes more intense. We call it dynamic breathability. And on steep, sweaty approaches and big mountain routes, you will appreciate the difference it makes. As a highperformance alpine jacket, weight is obviously an

|b|important issue. In addition to the robust yet lightweight fabric, the detailing also plays an important part here, with water resistant zippers (no need for additional covering flaps) and welded seams taped inside saving valuable weight. DISSENTER JACKET MENA new alpine jacket with a lean and clean design and the focus on essential performance features. With its innovative dynamic breathability fabric, low weight and stripped-down detailing, the DISSENTER is the real deal for the dedicated alpine purist. The fabric, TEXAPORE AIR O3+, is a very lightweight, waterproof and windproof 3-layer laminate with outstanding breathability performance (MVTR: 30,000 g/m2/ 24 h) and thats just when standing still! During high aerobic output this value increases, since the membrane is also air permeable. This means that air exchange occurs through the fabric, which improves the wear climate significantly. The jacket has an ACROBAT CUT (climbers, take note!) and water resistant zips to save weight. The offset front zip prevents the zip pullers on the various garments in the layering system bunching uncomfortably at the neck. ALPINE STANDARD BREATHABILITY AND WEATHER PROTECTIONMore high-performance fabric technology! TEXAPORE O4 EVO STRETCH delivers a high level of weather protection teamed with two additional attributes that are crucial on high mountain terrain: extremely good breathability and good freedom of movement. The extremely high MVTR (moisture vapour transmission rate) of 35,000 - 40,000 g/m2/24 h was achieved through the use of a special kind of fabric technology. Instead of separating the moisture vapour from fluid water in the classic way, with a porous membrane, the high-tech TEXAPORE O4 membrane is pore free. Sweat is shifted through this ultra thin membrane in

TEXAPORE O4 EVO STRETCHthe form of individual water molecules. The membrane offers little resistance to this process, which increases the efficiency significantly, while a catalytic layer accelerates the transmission from membrane to outer fabric. The pore free membrane remains waterproof up to a water column pressure of approx. 20,000 mm. Since the TEXAPORE O4 membrane is elasticated, we laminate it to a very light, kinetic stretch face fabric with a special taslanised finish for improved abrasion resistance at a relatively low weight.

CATARACT XT JACKET MEN/WOMENThe design brief was to create a new alpine shell combining excellent breathability and maximum freedom of movement with perfect hermetic weather protection. With this goal in mind, we developed the CATARACT XT JACKET. The fabric we selected for the job was TEXAPORE O4 EVO STRETCH, which is extremely breathable (the MVTR is simply incredible: 35,000-40,000g/m2/24h!), very waterproof (of course) and has kinetic stretch properties and thus ticked all the boxes on our list of performance attributes. Additional ventilation comes in the shape of venting pit zips and the remarkable chimney effect AIR FLOW COLLAR, which is lined with spacer mesh and allows warm, damp air to escape and fresh air to flow back into the jacket.

both lightweight and relatively robust

The ultra-lightweight theme runs like a thread through our ALPINISM collection. Up on the mountain, lightweight kit is a sensible choice after all, every gram counts on steep and strenuous ascents! And since light also means packable, even a relatively slim alpine pack can accommodate all the emergency clothing you might require. When designing and developing our lightweight alpine products, performance reliability is a strict priority. This approach ensures that saving weight in no way compromises the functionality and that the products are capable of coping with the harsh realities of alpine mountaineering. The fabrics used are high-performance, light and robust. The detailing is stripped down to the basics and concentrates in particular on those details that help to trim the weight, e.g. water resistant zips that dispense with the need for additional covering flaps. Note: many of our lightweight products can be identified by their name, e.g. the ATMOSPHERE series.

At the areas where the rucksack straps and belt cause greater abrasion and higher water pressures occur, and those where better breathability is required, we have used TEXAPORE O2 TASLITE, which has higher hydrostatic head and moisture vapour transmission ratings. Both fabrics have a 2.5 layer structure, with a special protective coating on the reverse side that replaces a lining and thus saves weight. Dispensing with zip flaps and using water resistant zips instead has the same effect. THE EPITOME OF THE ORIGINAL SOFT SHELL CONCEPT MUDDY PASSThe soft shell concept originated in the mountain sports sector, since it is here that the signature attributes of soft shell technology best possible weather protection teamed with outstanding breathability and freedom of movement are most frequently required, attributes that even a super-breathable hard shell jacket is generally incapable of delivering. The MUDDY PASS jacket is the epitome of the original soft shell concept. It is light, has a very high MVTR and is exceptionally stretchy. It is also wind resistant and repellent. And it comes with a little extra: the entire front section of the jacket has a windproof lining.

FUSION XT JACKET MENA new alpine soft shell with a breathability performance that keeps pace with your level of activity. The fabric, STORMLOCK O2 SOFTSHELL EQUALITE, has a macroporous membrane, which allows a continuous exchange of warm, moist air for fresh air to occur, a process that accelerates as your level of activity becomes more intensive and dynamic. This air exchange, or convection, produces an extremely high moisture vapour transmission rate through the membrane, a process that accelerates as your level of activity becomes more intensive. When necessary, the internal wear climate can be further improved by using the venting pit zips. The fabric has a water repellent finish, which copes well with brief showers.

The stand-out feature of our STORMLOCK O2 soft shell fabrics is the fact that they are windproof and air permeable at the same time. This means that a process of continuous air exchange occurs through the fabric. This is achieved by using a macroporous membrane though which warm, damp air can escape and fresh air can enter. The air exchange is accelerated by movement the more active you are, the better the breathability of the jacket. STORMLOCK O2 apparel is therefore particularly suitable for highly aerobic outdoor sports such as trail running and biking. The fabric is also water repellent and has kinetic stretch properties.

ACS ALPINISMThe uppers of our alpine boots are cut slightly higher than our trekking boots. They come up to well above the ankle. Which, for lasting wear comfort, makes it all the more important to incorporate a ventilation system that expels damp, warm air from the boot just as effectively as a low-cut model. To do the job, we developed a special alpine version of our new ACS ventilation system (ACS = Air Control System). It incorporates three components, which work together to deliver a noticeable improvement in climate comfort:

The system comprises a secondary padded tongue in perforated EVA, which creates an air expulsion channel at the instep, a perforated footbed, perforated padding and mesh fabric on the sides and the collar of the boot for improved ventilation. The sole of the boot is also worth a closer look. Developed by Jack Wolfskin in collaboration with Vibram, it is a sturdy mountain boot sole with four different tread zones: a climbing zone at the toe provides better friction and precision on small footholds, while the other zones deliver the secure grip and stability required on varied terrain and steep descents. The stiffness of the sole is engineered specifically to cope with rocky terrain and scree.
