Postovani,

U prilogu dostavljamo dopis UNESCO-a u vezi sa pozivom za dostavu nominacija za UNESCOKalinga nagradu za popularizaciju nauke za 2019. godinu.

UNESCO Kalinga nagrada za popularizaciju nauke je zajednicki ustanovljena od strane Kalingafondacije, Vlade indijske drzave Orisa i Vlade Indije i dodjeljuje se svake dvije godine osobi koja jenapravila znacajan doprinos popularizaciji nauke. Nominovana osoba treba da je posvetila karijeruturnacenju nauke, istrazivanja i tehnologije sirokoj javnosti s ciljem poboljsanja razumijevanja i trazenjarjesenja za lokalne, regionalne i global ne izazove. Nominovana osoba moze biti pisac, redaktor,predavac, urednik ili producent radio/televizijskog ili filmskog programa i ocekuje se da poznaje ulogukoju nauka, tehnologija i, uopsteno, istrazivanje imaju na poboljsanje dobrobiti drustva, obogacenjekulturnog nasljeda i rjesavanje problema covjecanstva. Mnogi od dosadasnjih dobitnika su i sami bilinaucnici, dok su drugi bili novinari, prosvjetitelji ili pisci. Nagrada se dodjeljuje samo pojedincu i rad ukome su ucestvovale dvije ili vise osoba nece biti uzet u razmatranje.

Prijedlog nominacije treba da sadrzi:

Pismo preporuke (od nacionalnog udruzenja za unapredenje nauke, akademije nauke ili drugihnaucnih udruzenja, i/ili nacionalnih udruzenja naucnih pisaca ili novinara),

Osnovne informacije 0 kandidatu i opis njegovih dostignuca,

Kratak pregled rada ili rezultata rada na popularizaciji nauke,

Opis na kojije nacin rad kandidata doprinjeo popularizaciji nauke,

Relevantnu pratecu dokumentaciju (publikacije, knjige, clanke, digitalne fajlove, itd)

Listu prilozene pratece dokumentacije,

Listu prevoda.

GENERAL RULESUNESCO KALlNGA PRIZE FOR THE POPULARIZATION OF SCIENCE 2019

Purpose

The Kalinga Prize rewards the exceptional efforts of a person who has had a distinguishedcareer as a writer, editor, lecturer, radio/television programme director or film producer,which has enabled her/him to help interpret science, research and technology to the public.He/she is expected to be knowledgeable of the role of science, technology, and generalresearch in the improvement of the public welfare, the enrichment of the cultural heritage ofnations and the solutions to the problems of humanity.The objective of the Prize is in directly in line with UNESCO's policies and is related to theProgramme on the popularization of science.

Donors and Prize

The Prize is funded by the Kalinga Foundation Trust, the Government of the State of Odisha,and the Government of India (Department of Science and Technology). It will be awarded bythe Director-General of UNESCO at an official ceremony during the World Science Forumthat will be held in Budapest, Hungary in November 2019.

The award consists of a monetary award amounting to US$40,000, an award certificate, andthe UNESCO-Albert Einstein silver medal. The laureate will also receive the Kalinga Chair asestablished by the Government of India (Department of Science and Technology) whichcomprises a certificate and cash award of US$5,000.

He/she will be invited to travel to India (travel and accommodation will be provided by theGovernment of India), for a two to four week tour to interact with scientists and sciencecommunicators. He/she will be provided with appropriate facilities to familiarizeherself/himself with Indian life and culture, Indian research and educational institutions, andthe development of India's industry and economy. He/she will also be invited to visit Indianuniversities, and attend meetings within India's scientific societies, particularly those of theIndian Science Congress Association. While in India, the Prize-winner will be asked to deliverlectures in English, and to take part in meetings in order to present recent progress inscience and technology as well as the social, cultural and educational impacts of modernscience.

Application process

The Prize is destined to candidates having contributed significantly to the popularization ofscience. The Prize may be awarded only to individuals. A work produced by a group ofpeople shall not be considered.

Applications shall be submitted to the Director-General through the governments of MemberStates, in consultation with their National Commissions, or through Non-GovernmentalOrganizations maintaining formal relations with UNESCO. A self-nomination cannot beconsidered. Each Member State and Non-Governmental Organization may designate onecandidate.

Each application shall include the following documents, in English or French:

Nomination letter by Permanent Delegation of Member or Observer State toUNESCO, National Commission for UNESCO, or Non-Governmental Organisationsmaintaining formal relations with UNESCO;

Description of the nominee's academic/professional background;

Summary of the work or the results of the work on the popularization of science;

Description of how the submitted work has contributed to the popularization ofscience;

List of enclosed annexes (publications, books, digital supports, media articles, etc.);

List of translations.

The application dossier should preferably submitted online. If however it must be sentby postal services, the complete dossier should come in five hard copies, or on fivedigital supports (USS, CD or DVD).

Evaluation process

The laureate is selected by the Director-General of UNESCO upon the recommendation of aJury of five members. This Jury, composed of recognised personalities in the field, isdesignated by the Director-General on the basis of equitable geographical distribution.

By early July 2019, the jury members will receive all applications for evaluation. InSeptember, the jury will meet at UNESCO to present the results of the evaluation to theDirector-General and issue their recommendations for a laureate.

It is my honour to invite your Government to submit, in consultation with yourNational Commission and the Non-Governmental Organizations holding officialpartnerships with UNESCO in your country, a candidate for the UNESCO KalingaPrize for the Popularization of Science 2019, The General Rules for the Prize areattached herewith for your kind information,

Jointly funded by the Kalinga Foundation Trust, the Orissa Government of India,and the Indian Government, the Prize is an international distinction to reward theefforts of a person who has had a distinguished career as a writer, editor,lecturer, radio/television/web programme director or film producer, which hasenabled him/her to help interpret science, research and technology for the public,He/she is expected to have knowledge of the role of science, technology andgeneral research for the improvement of public welfare, the enrichment of thecultural heritage of nations, and the solutions to the problems of humanity.

Only one candidate may be nominated by each Member State, through itsNational Commission for UNESCO, upon the recommendation of nationalassociations for the advancement of science, academies of science or any otherscience associations, national associations of science writers, scientificjournalists or other popularizers of science, where such associations exist.Nominations or applications from self-appointed individuals will not be accepted.

Each application should include a cover letter, and the following documents, inEnglish or French:

a. Description of the candidate's background;

b. Completed submission form;

c. Summary of the work, or the results of the work, on the popularization ofscience, including publications and other supporting materials, to besubmitted for consideration; and

d. Description of how the candidate's submitted work has contributed to thepopularization of science.
