Architectural Survey File
This is the architectural survey file for this MIHP record. The survey file is organized reverse-
chronological (that is, with the latest material on top). It contains all MIHP inventory forms, National
Register nomination forms, determinations of eligibility (DOE) forms, and accompanying documentation
such as photographs and maps.
Users should be aware that additional undigitized material about this property may be found in on-site
architectural reports, copies of HABS/HAER or other documentation, drawings, and the “vertical files” at
the MHT Library in Crownsville. The vertical files may include newspaper clippings, field notes, draft
versions of forms and architectural reports, photographs, maps, and drawings. Researchers who need a
thorough understanding of this property should plan to visit the MHT Library as part of their research
project; look at the MHT web site (mht.maryland.gov) for details about how to make an appointment.
All material is property of the Maryland Historical Trust.

working farm and includes barns, a tenant house, and outbuildings
dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is composed of
two parts, a four bay, true 1~ story frame section, and a four bay,
two story brick section. Although the evidence is inconclusive,
the frame section appears to predate the brick section. Legend
holds that the frame wing was constructed in 1692, and there
may have been a house on the property then but there is absolutely
no visible, physical conformation of that early date.
An even more unusual building on the property is the large
pyramidal dairy just a few feet of the house. Its wooden shingle
roof nearly reaches grade and it is topped by a metal ventilator.
Entry is through a six panel door set into a gable-roofed entry.
The eaves of this little entry are edged with wooden scallops.

Runnymeade is located on the north side of Route 292 about ~ mile west of the

section appears to predate the brick section. Legend holds that the frame wing was

absolutely no visible, physical conformation of that early date.
The frame section has its 6 over 6 sash window arranged in pairs on the south
facade. The frames are simple and narrow. 1bere are two rooms on the first floor and
the entrance is in the north wall. The building has two Victorian gable dormers in
the roof slopes and a roof which overhangs at the gable as well as on the long sides ot
the building. There is a brick chimney stack partially enclosed in the west gable.
1be building has recently been covered with wood-grain vinyl siding and it has a
black asphalt shingle roof.
The brick portion of the house is the same depth, 18'4", as the frame section. 1be
brick section has its facade laid in Flemish bond although is used elsewhere. Both
sections of the house are white with white trim.
1be brick building has tall brick chimneys with corbelled caps partially enclosed
in the gable walls. Its steeply pitched gable roof is finished with verge boards and
a three step corbelled cornice.
The entry door is in the second bay from the west. It has a reproduction wooden

Runnymeade is an interesting early farmhouse with two interesting 19th century
outbuildings. The house has a 1~ story frame section with one wall of paneling which
may date the 18th century and a two story brick section with corbelled cornice which
was probably constructed in the early 19th century. The most interesting outbuilding
is a rare pyramidal dairy, now converted into a garage.

flat arch. On the second floor the windows have louvered shutters, but on the first floor the shutters have two panels with Greek ogee and bevel panel moldings.
On the upper floor of the wing and on the first floor room (now a kitchen) the interior has been completely modernized. A wall of paneling remains in the middle room of the first floor. It has raised and beveled panels and a mantle with crude gouge work carving that resembles <lentils. There is also a simple corner cupboard with butterfly shelves.
The stair to the second floor of both sections is in the southeast corner of the wing, with a few more steps up to the parlour chamber. On both floors of the brick section contain one room each, although there appears to have been wooden portitions in each one. Little early interior trim remains in the brick section but there are paneled doors with four and six recessed or raised panels. On the second floor is some reeded, 19th century window trim.
An even more unusual building on the property is the large pyramidal dairy just a few feet of the house. Its wooden shingle roof nearly reaches grade and it is topped by a metal ventilator. Entry is through a six panel door set into a gable-roofed entry. The eaves of this little entry are edged with wooden scallops.
Standing beside the dairy is a smaller pyramidal-roofed building, probably used for storage. A frame structure, it is covered with German shiplap siding and has an asphalt shingle roof.
