PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends, Welcome back! Term 4 is up and running and it won’t be long until we will be seeing Christmas lights throughout our neighbourhood! Until then, we have another term of exciting teaching and learning at Elanora Heights which we know your children will enjoy.

Over the holidays, work commenced on our re-roofing project which will continue right into the Christmas holiday break. This will involve classes having to relocate at certain times throughout Term 4 so we thank our staff and community in advance for their patience during this period. Once the work is completed we will have upgraded all buildings, ready for the installation of the solar panels to support the Cooler Classrooms project.

You will also have observed that the footpath leading into the school has had new sections re-laid to address the trip hazards – another important task completed to enhance student and community safety. The footpath is now open for use.

Green DayTerm 4 commenced with our annual Green Day event, coordinated by the wonderful Jenny Cullen. This year’s theme was Wild Spots, with the children investigating places where animals live and how to preserve these areas to protect local species. Our thanks to Mrs Cullen for her incredible effort with this invaluable event each year, along with the community members, family members and many staff from the Coastal Environment Centre, Gibberagong and Kimbriki who supported the vast array of student activities. What a day!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Class Formation for 2020As class formation will commence soon, please advise the office (see note on page 8) if your child will be leaving us at the end of the year so that we can reflect this in our planning. Our staff have a strong knowledge of your child’s work habits and social interactions at school. Your child’s teacher is best placed to make decisions related to your child’s academic progress and will place them in a class for next year to meet their academic and social needs. If you have any additional information which may impact our class formation, please provide it in writing via the front office prior to the end of Week 4 (November 8).

Year 5 Bathurst TripWe would like to thank our Year 5 staff, Clare Hagon, Tracey van Niekerk, Andrea Rivas and Jono Rosconi for giving up time away from their families to accompany our Year 5 students to the Bathurst goldfields this week. A wonderful time was had by all! Please see the report in our next edition for more details.

Photo of the group at the 3 Sisters.....Year 2 Swimming SchemeThis term our Year 2 students will be attending the Department of Education’s Swimming Scheme every Friday as part of our commitment to ensure our students learn to swim. Our thanks to Vicki Bosler, Bec New, Di Reeks and Virginia St Heaps for their management of this program over Term 4.

Thank You P & C for our new Clevertouch Interactive Panels! We are delighted to inform you that 28 new Clevertouch Interactive Panels have been ordered and we look forward to using them when they arrive. Our sincere thanks to our P&C for their fabulous fundraising efforts and donating approx $40,000 towards this project of nearly $100,000 in total. Every class in the school will benefit from this new technology, replacing our original fleet of interactive whiteboards which have exhausted their lifespan.

We are very appreciative of this support from our community so thank you for buying those car raffle tickets, mothers’ day gifts and attending our functions as every little bit helps! We are hoping to have installation completed prior to the new school year.

Evacuation DrillAs part of our ongoing commitment to community safety, this afternoon we conducted a drill to practice our evacuation procedures in the event of a school emergency. These practices are conducted periodically as part of our Health and Safety program. All students were well prepared for this practice and behaved appropriately. Well done, Elanora!

Until next time,

Leesa Martin Principal

... ELANINJA WARRIOR FUNDRAISER!Our annual fundraising event this year will take place on Tuesday November 12 when students will have the opportunity to test their strength, speed and agility in our very own Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course. We have three weeks to raise as much money as possible so it’s time to set up a fundraising page and ask your family and friends for sponsorship.

Information and permission notes have been sent out via our app with detailed instructions on how to set up your child’s online fundraising page. Permission notes can be signed digitally and returned via the app as well. This information will also be available on our website.

NSW PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE 2019Last term, our Year 6 Debating Team competed in the quarter final round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Having narrowed themselves down to the top 8 of the NSW Northern Sydney Region, they went on to face a tough debate that narrowly saw them receive the runners up award, placing them 5th out of 126 NSW schools.

A huge congratulations to the 2019 year 6 debating team; Ella F, London M, Amelie E, Daisy-Sky R, Bonnie H and Freya H! Amazing effort girls, we couldn’t be more proud of this fantastic achievement!

.Welcome back! We hope you had a great break.

Don’t miss out on the highlight of this term’s P&C calendar – the Fathers’ Campout is next weekend – 26/27 Oct! The long term forecast is predicting great weather! Dry and moderate temperatures will be the perfect conditions to spend a fun afternoon playing games and then firing up the BBQ for dinner.

Notes were sent home in the last week of Term 3 or you can get a copy from the ‘Notes’ tab of our school website.

Please return these ASAP so that our team can finalise catering.

If you are a parent who can help with the games, evening BBQ, breakfast or cleanup, please contact Ro at [email protected].

Mums, get hubbys registered for this event and make the most of this opportunity to enjoy a night for yourself free and clear!

Term 3 was so busy for everyone so we deferred the Working Bee to Sunday November 3 from 2pm. There are always a variety of jobs to do to keep the place in order, not just weeding, and these things can really only be done when there are many hands. It only takes an hour or two so pop on down the track and get amongst it. Don’t forget to bring the children, they may not love doing chores at home but they do at school, go figure!

P&C meeting – Wednesday October 30 @ 7pm – usual date, the third Wednesday of the term, in the staffroom. The AGM will be a month later on Wednesday November 27. If you would like to vote on a particular issue you will need to be a paid up member ($1) before the AGM so come along to our October meeting.

Please note: There are positions on the Committee becoming available next year, so to keep the P&C operating as well as it does, those positions will need to be filled. What a great thing to put some energy into and your children will love you for it! Contact [email protected] if you have any questions on what is involved or to express your interest.

... PCS NAIDOC CELEBRATIONSIn Week 10 last term a group of students from EHPS, accompanied by Mrs de Paiva and Mrs Bradshaw attended the Giballee, Warrawee event as part of the PCS NAIDOC and Gai-mariagal Festival celebrations.

This event was held at Bilgola Plateau Public School this year and the students enjoyed a fun-filled day experiencing Aboriginal culture and engaging in a variety of games and activities run by members of our local Guringai AECG, Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing Educators and community. The day finished with a community barbecue followed by a traditional smoking ceremony and yarning-circle.

Staff and students thoroughly enjoyed the culturally immersive day and look forward to next year’s event.

... GREEN DAY

Green Day..... ask your children!Last Tuesday the school was humming with classes heading off to different environmental activities for Green Day. And K-2 classes continued to have their environmental art sessions for remainder of the week.

Here are a few conversation starters to use with your children.

Kindy: All kindy classes had a chance to dig in the completed school compost and pick out the bits that don’t degrade and should never have gone there. What did the compost look like? What did you have to pick out? Why is it good to compost your food scraps?

Year 1: What did you learn about the problems caused by our waste? How can we reduce our waste? What goes in the recycling bin at home and school? What goes in the compost bin?

Year 2: Tell me about Peter’s visit (the toy repairer). Why is it important to repair toys instead of throwing them away? Who do they give the repaired toys to? Do you have any toys that need fixing? Could you fix it at home?

Years K-2: Tell me about your art lesson with Emmie. What did you need to put in your picture of a wild spot? How did you make sure there were places for insects, birds and animals to live?

Year 3-5: Tell me about the talk by Trent. What is happening to the forests where Leadbeater’s Possums live? What does it mean if a plant or animal becomes extinct? How can we help save forests? (Answer: Stop cutting old growth forests down. Reduce paper use and only buy paper certified by FSC, the Forest Stewardship Council. This means it is from a genuinely sustainably managed plantation).

Year 3: What did you see at Kimbriki? What did Peter Rutherford talk about and show you at the Ecogarden? What did you see and hear on the minibus tour? What do we need to do at home? What did Kate or Helen from Gibberagong show you around our school grounds?

Year 4: What did you learn about at Dewrang Reserve (the proper name for Fire Engine Park and the bush remnant above)? How does the bush provide a habitat for creatures? What signs of animals and birds did you see? How can we care for bushland near our homes or school? What are important things to remember when using the school bush track?

Year 6: Year 6 - Tell me about your excursion to Narrabeen Lagoon and the beach. How are human’s activities affecting the lagoon? What are the challenges we need to think about in managing the lagoon and the beachfront from Narrabeen to Collaroy?

Go for a walk with them and let their young eyes spot all sorts of things marvellous and, sometimes, sadly in need of action.

Jenny Cullen,

Green Day coordinator
