The K value is a complex property and is thought of as the ease with which soil is detached by splash during rainfall or by surface flow, or both. K includes the effects of texture, mineralogy, organic matter, structure, permeability, and depth to a limiting layer. K factors are expressed for each soil layer. Kf represents the soil erodibility of the fine fraction less than 2 mm. The RUSLE Soils Data Table contains the updated Kf values for the surface layer. Kf values for lower layers are located in FOCS, Soils, Physical Properties of Soils. The K factors for Hawai’i are based on the Rainulator studies of Dr. Samir El-Swaify, Professor of Soil Science at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Obtaining K Factor Values Verify that the surface texture of the soil on site is the same as described in the soil survey. Call the soil scientist for assistance if necessary. Use the appropriate RUSLE Soil Data table to obtain the Kf value for the soil map unit. K FACTOR (SOIL ERODIBILITY)

K accounts for the influence of soil properties on soil loss. The K value is a complex propertyand is thought of as the ease with which soil is detached by splash during rainfall or by surfaceflow, or both.
