THE LENA DELTA STATE NATURE RESERVE
The great S iberian Lena R ive r is a natural boundary between M idd le and North- East S ib e ria . It brings its waters to the A rctic O cean stopping its fast run behind the 72nd para lle l and form ing the most expansive delta in Russia. It has an area of more than 32 thousand sq. km and lies between the O lenek

From this place the basic delta's channels — the O lenek, Bo lshaya Tumatskaya, Trofim ovskaya, Bykovskaya — take the ir beginning. Various sm aller channels and branches produce a dense network with more than 1500 islands of d ifferent sizes and shapes. The Lena brings an immense am ount of re la tive ly warm w ater and solid alluvium to the delta. The average annual w ater loss is about 16300 m3/sec ; 15 m illion tons

The great w ater volum e that is brought by the Lena and accepted by the A rctic Ocean provides a w arm ing effect over the Laptev Sea and the w ho le po lar basin .The existence of the w ell known G re a t S iberian ice hole near the New S iberian Islands to a large extent depends on the Lena's w ater b low ing into the ocean. The rive r's re la tive ly warm fresh w ater m ixed w ith ocean cold m arine waters renders a considerab le in fluence over the sea coast ecosystem s and delta itself. Pecu liar biocenoses are form ed there having particu lar sign ificance for feeding and spawning valuab le whitefish (C o regon idae) stocks.
The Lena delta is the most im portant breeding and nesting location for a large number of avian birds a rriv ing at this convin ien t p lace from South and South-East A s ia , A ustra lia , A m erica , A frica , W est and East Europe. Thus the Lena delta is hom eland and cradle for a m ajo rity of species. The characteristic soil and vegetation cover of the region is the basis for the creation of the unique northern ecosystem s.
The w ild life , com pared to the ad jo in ing te rrito ries of the Yakut tundra, is richer and more d iverse. A rctic , subarctic and northern-boreal elem ents are found there . The Lena is a d istinctive eco log ical w ater

Route along which more southern anim al and plant forms transfer far northwards. The Kharau lakh mountains situated not far from the delta define the existence of the typ ica l m ountain forms.
The delta districts adjacent to the Laptev Sea and the New S iberian Islands provide habitats for the A rctic animal forms both invertebrate and fish and m arine bird and mammal species.
The intensive development of the North during recent decades has had an adverse im pact upon the delta environm ent. It was there in Yakutia in the 40ies that the first environm ental catastrophe took place. The establishm ent of a fish processing plants network in the Lena delta and its lower stretches in the period of the G rea t Patrio tic W a r (W o rld W a r II) in 1942— 1943 and unlim ited fish ing caused a disastrous decline of Coregonus fish stocks by 1950. Fish reserves have not regenerated in the Lena until

Considering these adverse changes in the environm ent and in the interests of its preservation and restoration, in 1986 the Lena Delta Nature Reserve com prising two districts — the Delta (1300 thousand hectars) and the Sokol (133 thousand hectars) — was established. "The D e lta" district occupies the western Lena delta part, the "S o ko l" m ountain district covers an expansive triangle of the Lena right bank from Tit-A ry island up to Stolb island descending downward to the m iddle strech of the Bykovskaya channel, and up to the Lena opposite Tit-Ary is land .
