KAIVALYADHAMA YOGA IN EDUCATION: CONTRIBUTION FROM 2000 - 2017
Kaivalyadhama
“the purpose of education is to help us to find out what we are in this wold for, - is it merely to grow rich or greatly learned, or is it for the purpose of
fulfilling yourself and making yourself an offering to supreme? The student should always find time for self knowledge (Atmajan), scrutiny and self criticism (Atma Vichar) even at a time when everyone is hectically after
accumulation of material possession.”
Dr.Radhakrishnan
“Be it any subject a teacher should emphasize on inculcation of ethical values amongst students, while planning out the subject
matter to be taught”
Swami Kuvalayananda
Introduction
Swami Kuvalayananda was the first to conceive the idea of integration of systematized and methodical yoga training into the mainstream educational system of the country. In 1932, he was invited by the Government of Utter Pradesh for training school teachers in Yoga Education whereby in a month’s time number of batches of teachers were trained in 1937. He introduced Yoga in teachers training courses as early as 1932. For the first time in history Swamiji had formulated a graded syllabus of yogic exercises to be introduced in Physical Education programme in Mumbai state. Later, many Universities approached him for help in introducing yogic exercises in their respective set-ups. Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute which was established in the year 1924, is an institute aided by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India since the year 1949. It carries on work in the field of Scientific & Philosophico Literary Research, Training and Therapy in Yoga. Yoga is not only the foundation of Indian Culture but also of the different cultures of the world. It is well established that body and mind are interdependent. Therefore in Yoga exercises for both body and mind are prescribed, so that the two might develop themselves in a spirit of co-operation leading to such a psycho-physiological condition that they should cease to enslave the human soul. Yoga is renowned to calm the mind. The asanas that are part of the yogic curriculum can be helpful in therapeutic aspects. In order to promote Yoga at the school level, so that it becomes part of them at a very young age, Kaivalyadham carries out various training programs at all levels i.e. students, teachers, principals, educators and administrative officers. Kaivalyadhama and some other institutes of repute have been engaged in conducting teacher training courses, Government schemes for years now. It also carries out annual programs in the Navodaya vidyalaya schools to introduce Yoga in a systematic manner to educate the students as well as teachers in the subject. Three months of Yoga training is conducted in the vidyalay wherein both the teachers as well as the students undergo the learning process. After three months the master trainers from the teachers are identified, who would carry forward the practice in the schools.

A discussion document produced change. The document elaborates the point as follows: It may also be pointed out that there is a need to bring to notice the contribution of Indian to the world wisdom. Paradoxical as it may sound, while our children know about Newton, they do know a computer they do know the concept of zero. Mention may also have to be made for instance of Yoga and Yogic practices, as well as, Indian systems of medicine like Ayurvedic and Unani forms which are being recognized and practiced all over the world . KAIVALYADHAMA
With the goal of restructuring society round spiritual values through a revival of the ancient Yogic discipline, Swami
Kuvalyanand established the Kevalyadham Yoga Institute in 1924, at Lonavala. One of the first thing he did was to bring out
“Yoga Mimansa”, a Yogic journal. Publishing this was a pioneering step towards demystifying Yoga. Yoga was now presented as
a science which successfully managed to bridge the gap between the spiritual and physical aspects of Yoga.
The impact was soon felt and an enthusiastic team of people dedicated research soon joined Swamiji. A crucial part of the
Kaivalyadhama which really placed it on the International map is the Scientific Research Department (SRD) which initially
functioned with rudimentary instruments. Its mission is to unveil the practical side of psycho-physiological aspects of Yoga for
the welfare of the common man through educational, therapeutic and research related endeavours in Yoga.
SRD has different sections like Biochemistry, Radiology, Psychology, Physiology and Physical Education all fully equipped with
the latest instruments for attaining precision in the studies and experiment.
A more decisive way of institutionalizing the teaching of yoga was to start a regular college, an ambition realized in 1951 in the
form of Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga & Cultural Synthesis in Lonavla. Both theoretical and practical training in
yoga is provided here to the students who in turn impart training to multitudes outside within country and abroad.
The full-fledged Yogic Hospital S.A.T.Gupta Hospital and Health Care Centre is a first ever hospital of its kind in India where
Yogic treatment is given under complete medical supervision and results assessed on scientific lines with the help of a
research laboratory.
It is no exaggeration to say that Scientific Yoga in the single largest contribution of Swami Kuvalyananda and that
Kaivalyadhama is embodiment of that pursuit.

Bera, T. K., Rajapurkar, M. V., & Ganguly, S. K. (1990): Effect of yoga training on body density in
school going boys. NIS Scientific Journal, Vol 13 (2): 23-35
The present experiment evaluated the effect of a one year yogic exercises training programme on body
density and its selected substantiate variables. Fatfolds were taken from the triceps, subscapular, post
suprailiac, chin and midaxilliary sites by a Lange caliper in 20 experimental and 20 control male subjects
before and after one year progressive training regimen. Yogic exercise training consisted of 17 practices.
ANCOVA revealed significant increments in body density and ideal body weight (p<0.01) for the
experimental group as compared to the control group. However, significant gains in present body fat and
absolute fat weight were observed in control group while compared with the experimental (p<0.01). The
results demonstrate that the conventional yogic exercise does 1) preferentially reduce the present body fat
and absolute fat weight, and 2) significantly increases the ideal body weight and body density.

the adolescent high school boys. Yoga Mimamsa, 14 (1&2): 92-99.
A shift towards increased parasympathetic functions was seen in 44 adolescent high school boys after two
months training in yogic physical culture. The residual effect of the training was noted after two months
during autonomic balance studies.
Gharote M. L. & Ganguly S. K. (1975): Survey of minimum muscular fitness on school children.
Indian Journal of Medical Research, 63, 9, 1242-1250.
40.3% of school population failed in one or more items of Kraus Webers minimum muscular fitness test
indicating poor fitness. Significant negative relationship (r=0.77) was observed between the age and failures
in the test. The abdominal strength was very poor in boys of 7-9 years while boys between 13-15 years were
very poor in flexibility.
Gharote M. L., Ganguly S. K. & Moorthy A. M. (1976): Effect of yogic training on minimum
muscular fitness. Yoga Mimamsa, 18 (3&4), 1-20.
In a study of 430 school boys in the age group of 6-20 years yogic training for 3 weeks showed an
improvement of 36.8% in comparison to 20% improvement in minimum muscular fitness obtained through
repetition of Kraus Webers test. However, the difference was not significant.
Gharote M. L. (1976): Effect of short term yogic training program on the physical fitness of school
boys. Avagahan, 1(1), 9-15.
Significant improvement was observed in the physical fitness index indicative of improved trunk strength,
explosive strength, and balance in 40 boarder school students of experimental group and control group
undergoing yogic training for 3 weeks as per NFC syllabus. De-training effect showed significant reduction in
the physical fitness index. Scores on the extent flexibility, dynamic flexibility, soft ball throw and balance
showed delayed effect.

National Journal of Laboratory Medicine. 2014 Sep, Vol 3(3): 15-19 Objective: To study the effect of yoga practices on selected cognitive development variables among adolescent rural residential school children. Materials and Methods: Eighty two students, age ranged from 11-15 years, were randomly divided into experimental (n=41) and control (n=41) groups. Selected cognitive development variables were evaluated at the baseline and at the end of 12 weeks of yoga training in both groups. Results: Significant improvement was observed in measures of mental ability and memory in experimental group. However, no statistically significant changes were observed in measures of mental ability and memory tests in control group. Conclusion: Selected cognitive development variables were improved after 12 weeks of yoga training in adolescent rural residential school children.
Verma A., Shete S. U., Thakur G. S., Kulkarni D. D., & Bhogal R. S. (2014): The effect of yoga practices on micronutrient absorption and physical fitness in rural residential school children: a randomized controlled trial. IJRAP, 5(2), 1-6.
Micronutrients are extremely important in preschool and adolescent children due to the rapid physical and mental growth. Impaired absorption of micronutrients may lead to poor physical and mental health. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the effect of yoga practices on selected micronutrient absorption and physical fitness variables among rural residential school children. Eighty two male students, aged 11-15 years, were randomly divided into experimental (n=41) & control (n=41) groups. Micronutrient status and physical fitness variables were evaluated at the baseline and at the end of 12 weeks of yoga training in both groups. During the experimental study, all the students continued with their normal vegetarian diet available at the hostel mess and no external nutritional supplements were provided. Data were analysed using paired ‘t’ tests and independent ‘t’ test. Micronutrients and physical fitness were measured at the beginning and at the end of 12 weeks. The results of between group comparisons revealed significant improvement in Cu and Mg (p0.001; p0.01) in yoga group as compared to control group. There was no significant change in Hb, Zn, Fe and physical fitness variables (p>0.05). However, results of within group showed no significant increase in Mg, Fe, and Cu (p0.001) as well as haemoglobin and Zinc (p>0.05)in yoga group, whereas control group showed significant increase in Cu (p0.001) and no statistically significant change was observed in Haemoglobin &Zn(p>0.05). The significant increase in flexibility, grip strength and abdominal strength was evident after yoga practice (p0.001). Micronutrient absorption and physical fitness can be improved after 12 weeks of yoga training in adolescent rural residential school children.
