no I wouldn’t be able to but after there I came back to Peru to participate in programs that were
work and study abroad and when I was a student in Peru I was able to travel to the U.S during
my summer and work for three months and come home and go back for three months and then I
came to Iowa and when I came here to live it was in July or August...” and now then I decided to
live here in 2006. Now, she lives with her husband and child (left) in Ankeny, Iowa. The two are

No

L: Mi región, bueno de la _____. No hay leyendas que yo sepa. Que recuerdo de cuentos en ___

colegialas.

L: No sé, target.
C: El Padre Almeida o pecado Cabeza
K: Uhm, la quinta, no, no recuerdo
C: había un montón de leyendas similares
K: sí 33
L: jajajaja
No creo

L: My region, good for the _____. No legends that I know. I remember ___ stories in schools. In

usually that's the kind of thing the average bequests are serving because in Peru thereno song is

Then this Do you live in the middle classes, no? And I live at school where children speak and

C: argo, but
L: I dunno, target. Looks like my do not know. Watch say that in the evenings this is a yellow
plant. And I do not know.
C: haha yea you would all be scary! haha
L: Yea we didn’t always like it but we did it. But of the region, legends, no there aren’t any of
the same. Uhm and I think the legends, of Peru that we talked about we listened too the Le Cran,
de la Selva there are many of the Selva. There are many and also of old times
C/K: Yea
L: I know there is a story call “La Llorna”
C/K: Oh, yea!
L: And that was never very popular, there was no my, my
C: In your life or?
L: My, my group, yea. There was never a big group. No one ever really believed it. In my group.
It was a little silly
C: and that is a really common legend throughout the latin America
Davison y Wright 25
L: Yea yea La Llorna is really common in English and Latin America knows it.
I don’t know in my group but everyone did know about La Llorna. But there are many of the
legends that we studied en university and the college that are about the histories-they are the
legends of the Incas and legends of the Selva and something like, Geico
C: Yea I think many of the legends and myths that we read were about the Incas and were like
about how a lake is like it is-
K: and there was the myth-many witches
C: yea lots of witches. What is the major religion en Peru?
L: The major part of Peru are Catholics
C: Ok. We talked a lot about the differences and the similarities between the legends and myths
and the religion.
K: Yea. Yea
C: It was interesting. Many of the myths were changed in order to be more similar to the religion
L: Like how?
C: Uhm I don’t know a legend exactly but I remember a lot because the conquistadores came to
Latin America and brought the Catholic religion and thought that if they changed the legends
and stories of the people they could change the ideas of the public
K: yea. And example best is possible The Padre Almieda,
C: El Padre Almeida o Sin Cabeza
K: Uhm, the fifth , no, I don’t remember
C: there were a lot of similar legends
K: yea 33
L: Hahahaha
Davison y Wright 26
C: we had a big test over all of them but there was one like Sleepy Hollow, of the Headless
Horsemen, there was the Padre Sin Cabeza and...
K: We didn’t have these
C: He walked through the streets and more or less did something or in order to, he wanted to do
something to people who were bad,
K: it was really late in the night
C: and the father was there to make someone be better
K: Yea.
C: so with the legend about the house, do you think this is really popular in one part of Peru now
and do they use it different parts or more or...
L: What is your question? Haha
C: Do you think there are people who use it in Peru the legend of the house in popular culture?
L: Yes. I think so the people use it, it, is the story the legend passed from mouth to mouth from
generation to generation. Because the house the appearances-follows something real. And a
whole generation can pass by it. You can see it and go to it and pass it on your way to school.
And now also I know that the house of Manceita that it exists like a witch or a problem of
paranormal activity. I think it is pop culture.
C: And if I went to Peru in the future and was walking through the street and I asked a person to
tell me a legend, and I don’t know if I am that place or another place, do you think that person
that that person would tell me that legend or another legend or?
L: It depends on which part you would be, in the coast or in the desert or in the Selva. Because in
the coast there are many legends there are many legends about the seasons about the inevitability
of them or in the control of the gran or there are one, I don’t know if it is really a legend or a
Davison y Wright 27
myth but anyways it says that there are Selvas of the, how do you say, the person that is always
existing in the catholic churches...
C: Oh the padre?
L: The papa! Haha this is El Papa and he is certified nun or monk, like, not like the Virgen but it
says that it is like the saint that is waiting, in that time, I don’t know in that time, Like the 1800s
and they would be able to talk about the purity and the devils and and like until and after a few
years they can be a papa and then a saint, like Santa Rosa de Lima. I don’t think this is actually a
legend but it is something that exists but it is like the Milagros. But yea to me it is important but I
don’t know about others and the Milagros which type about which of the Milagros they would do
and the things that that would happen. So for me it is a legend, but for a catholic, I don’t think
so. That is what happens and that is the reality of what would happen. In the desert there are
more about what happened with the Incas and the histories and the parts of the culture. In peru
all think that it is the truth. There are no other ways to do it or to change it for example the story
of Mancopaco, which is a history that I think the man before that was of witches and the like,
but no he did not have the power of government and he could not administer the people. And
then came the people Mancopaca that united the people to govern. And they said he left the lake
and stayed with the people to govern and it says he taught them to fish and hunt and cook and
administer money in order to save for the future and the building and he was one of the first
incas but it is not formal it is not a formal history. And it was something leaving out of the water
and it had to be something of the gods. But this is a story a history of Peru that we studied and
that worked as a history
C: Do you think all the people in the regions believe in all the legends and that they are the truth,
more or less?
Davison y Wright 28
L: Ah, I don’t think so. I think they think it is like a metaphor. Because I think they know it is a
human, not like an alien.
C: haha, yea sometimes it is hard
L: Yea when they are kids yea
CK: yea yea
L: If someone is leaving the water, you know, in those times you know it’ not a mirage and at
that time people can think it is like a god or something to govern or do things that are so strong
and great that follows that there are many abandoned people that they see it is like sismica and
the things they can do, but they construction to follow the apparitions. If they think it’s the gods
but they don’t think it’s real. It is history but nobody knows it is the house it is the times they can
do it they can believe that
C: I think we have some questions about you. You are from Peru?
L: Yes, haha
C: Haha okay that’s what we thought just making sure. But when did you leave?
L: Left Peru?
C: Yes
L: To the U.S?
K: or wherever?
C: did you live in many countries?
L: Yes, I went to university, well I went to high school as an inter exchange student in Thailand
for a year I studied there for a year,
C: That’s very brave
Davison y Wright 29
L: huh yea haha and at times I really wanted to go home because I didn’t feel like I fit in, But my
mom, “ah you need to keep studying, one week more!” So I studied more and more and then I
decided never more would I go because no one spoke English or Spanish and there were so many
people in the capital and it was always a new experience In the moment which was really
difficult. And now it is good I am glad I did it. Now things aren’t so horrible haa and, would I
do that experience again? I think now no I wouldn’t be able to but after there I came back to Peru
to participate in programs that were work and study abroad and when I was a student in Peru I
was able to travel to the U.S during my summer and work for three months and come home and
go back for three months and then I came to Iowa and when I came here to live it was in July or
August. And now then I decided to live here in 2006. And I think I would like to go back to Peru.
