K/1 ORANGE RALEIGH NURSING HOME VISIT On Wednesday the 31 st of October, K/1 Orange went to Raleigh Nursing Home. We were very excited to travel on the bus and meet our driver Peter! When we arrived, we met Debbie and Kristie and they led us to the entertaining area. We introduced ourselves to the residents and read our ‘familiar read’ with expression. The residents helped us colour in our pictures. After all our hard work, we relaxed on the balcony and enjoyed afternoon tea. Finally, we sang ‘One Song’ and ‘Fire and Flood’ using our best singing voices. Thank you to all the staff and residents for having us. STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AT URUNGA PUBLIC SCHOOL Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Our teachers at Urunga Public School have been embarking on the journey of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and how this can be incorporated at our school to continue to make it a wonderful place. PBL is an evidence-based whole school process to improve learning outcomes for all students. We have had the pleasure of Joanne Stewart who has provided professional learning for our staff around understanding what PBL is and how it supports schools and the students within. A team of four teachers will be attending a 3-day workshop to plan and start the implementation process at Urunga. Literacy and Numeracy Progressions Staff have started the ongoing training around the new learning progressions. This will start with the initial implementation phase in 2019, where Best Start for Kindergarten will be conducted and align with the Learning Progressions and teachers will be implementing it with all students across their class. What are the learning progressions? The learning progressions are a teaching and learning resource. They describe common pathways of literacy and numeracy development from Kindergarten to Year 10. The learning progressions map to the NSW syllabuses and the Australian curriculum in English and Mathematics, demonstrating the development needed to meet stage outcomes. They can be used to determine what students know already, and what they need to learn next. Why were the learning progressions developed? The learning progressions have been developed to help identify student needs, and to support classroom planning and reporting. The learning progressions will: provide comprehensive information about literacy and numeracy development from K-10 identify knowledge, understanding and skills that can be demonstrated across all learning areas, not

just English and Mathematics allow teachers to locate a student's current knowledge and ability more accurately, to determine the

learning that should follow.

LULU LEAPS INTO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Lulu McGrath, one of our school captains and very talented sports person, showed us what she is really capable of at the PSSA State Athletics Championships last week. She made it to this level to compete in the 12yrs girls 200m sprint as well as the 12yrs girls long jump. While she ran well in her 200m, she didn’t make it past the heats. It was the long jump where she really excelled. After starting off with two foul jumps in her heat, she had nothing to loose and just ‘went for it’ on her third and final jump. She jumped 4.77m which was a personal best jump for her and also qualified her for the final!! With three more jumps in the final, she stepped it up another notch and jumped an amazing 4.91m (yet another PB) to finish third overall and claim the bronze medal. A truly fantastic achievement in an extremely strong field. The gold medal winner actually set a new State record! Lulu will now travel to the National Titles to be held in Melbourne from 23rd – 27th November. Lulu is over the moon to be able to compete at this level. Our whole school community is very proud of her, congratulates her and wishes her all the best.

COUNT US IN SONG DAY Urunga Public School participated in the annual Music: Count Us In song day last Thursday. We were linked into the live stream to sing “One Song” with approximately half a million other students from all around Australia! All these students were singing the same song, on the same day, at the same time. The Music: Count Us In project aims to promote and foster music education in schools which has been shown to help students with self-confidence, self-discipline and team work. Everyone had been practising hard in their classes and at whole school assemblies and the performance at 12.30pm was fantastic. Well done everybody!

HEAD LICE It’s that time again! The head lice are out and about. Please check your child’s hair regularly for head lice and eggs (nits) - use a fine metal tooth nit comb and plenty of cheap hair conditioner applied to the dry hair. This is a cheap method to see if your child has head lice, and if they do please treat with an approved head lice treatment. It is very important to remove all the eggs and repeat the process regularly until you no longer find eggs or lice in your comb. Eggs will continue to hatch over a ten day period. It is also advisable to wash bedding and pillow slips in a hot wash and put them through the dryer.

MUSIC LEARNING SPACE Thank you to those who made it possible to create our music studio on the left hand side of the stage. It is set up to be a useful musical learning space and is being utilised by our music tutors. Judy Thorn

HALLOWEEN Sharon joined in the spooky feel of Halloween last Wednesday and created some scary (but still very yummy!) cupcakes. There were ghosts, pumpkin faces and sour zombies to choose from. They were very popular and raced off the counter. Thanks Sharon for joining in the fun of Halloween!
