After three rehearsals the group was ready to put together their version of the song which included three-part vocal harmony, a string trio, mandolin, guitar, bass, keyboard, percussion and drums. It was a fantastic experience and a steep learning curve for the students and music teachers (Virginia Johnstone, Ben Wordsworth and Paul Brady) to work alongside the SCU audio engineer, Steve Law, in a professional recording studio. The students gained a great insight in to the recording process, doing a number of takes for each section. The “Opportunity” recording was a very valuable and rewarding project for all concerned and it was great to see new student friendships and professional relationships forged through the process. Congratulations to all involved.

Celebrat ing 40 Years of Ser vice

March 13th 2017 saw a very special celebration at Kadina High Campus when Mrs Michelle Mortimer was recognised for achieving 40 years continuous service. Mrs Mortimer has always been a thorough professional whether it be in the Science Department, the library or in the main office. Her commitment to team work is exceptional, always demonstrating her generosity and always offering to help others by giving extra hours. Mrs Mortimer has an encyclopaedic knowledge of students, policies and procedures always performing her duties with equity, compassion and understanding. Mrs Mortimer's team members praised her greatly during the special morning tea celebration which highlighted the outstanding loyalty and kindness which Mrs Mortimer displays on a daily basis at Kadina. Over the 40 years Mrs Mortimer has contributed to many successful fundraising events which students, staff and the local community have appreciated.

Ian Davies, Principal, wished Mrs Mortimer a wonderful day with beautiful flowers and a touching speech of thanks for her years of dedicated support to Kadina. We all hope we can continue to share her smiling face for many more years to come.

  • The Rivers Secondary College, Open Boys and Girls Soccer

On Tuesday 21st March the senior boys and girls soccer teams, representing The Rivers Secondary College travelled out to Bonalbo for the first round of the CHS Knockout. The Girls played first, putting on a fantastic display of both skill and teamwork. Each side played the game wholeheartedly with ‘The Rivers’ Girls coming out the victors with a convincing 14-0 win. Brea, Tahli, Madison and Hayley all scoring 1 goal each, Dana and Kendelle put two in the back of the net and Alinta and Bella bagged hat-tricks (three), making it a great first game for our College.

The Boys game was up next and got off to a flying start with ‘The Rivers’ team controlling play from the get go. Isaac scored a great goal, Bob and Bodhi both scored two, including a great ‘header’ from Bob, while Jayden showing fantastic composure in front of goal, netting three goals also. The game ended with a score line of 9-1, after an own goal from the Bonalbo team. Credit where credit is due though, huge congratulations must go to the two Bonalbo teams. Each played their games in a spirited and positive nature, making the day excellent for everyone involved. I’d personally like to thank the efforts of Boys coach, Mr John Eakin, who organised the day, putting in huge hours to ensure that everything ran smoothly. The River’s teams should be proud of their efforts and we look forward to moving into the next round with positive intent.

  • This summer holidays, Riley and I, Lachlan travelled to Macquarie University to participate in the AMT digIT computer coding program. We stayed there for five days, during which we learned the basics of three coding languages, engaged in a robotics workshop, and were introduced to algorithmic techniques. Languages included Scratch, used for animations, games and education, HTML, used for creating webpages, and Python, a powerful language used for building apps. For robotics we used a kit known as a Sphero, a tiny, spherical robot controllable from a phone. We also visited the UTS Data Arena, which is a 360 degree 3-D projector, and the Google Sydney office. Over the course of the first half of the year, we hope to develop our coding skills which will eventually culminate into a tech-support website. We recommend trying out coding, and websites such as Grok Learning and Codecademy can help introduce prospective coders into the craft. All of the teachers, speakers and organisers at digIT did a fantastic job of co-ordinating a superb learning opportunity for us both.

  • On the summer holidays from the 10th till the 24th of January I was invited to a Maths Summer camp (NMSS) at the Australian National University. I had applied several months before, writing about my future aspirations with maths, and why I'd like to come. My teacher also wrote a recommendation sheet. Arriving on campus we stayed in student accommodation at John XXIII. There were about 60 students, all keen and extremely able, from across the country (some from Mildura, Alice Springs, Perth and Adelaide). Every day we went to a morning lecture, on several advanced maths topics such as Projective Geometry, Number Theory and Automata. We then had a tutorial, in which we worked on problem sheets from the lecture with our classmates and tutor. They were quite tough, several problems I couldn't solve. We were told it doesn't matter if we can't solve all of them, find a problem you find interesting and work on it. After the morning tutorials we walked back to the accommodation hall for lunch. It was prepared by the chefs there and was absolutely delicious. After lunch we went back to the lecture hall for the afternoon lecture, on a different topic, and then had our tutorial. After which we had free time until dinner. So we played board games, cards, went to play soccer on the uni oval with the lecturers (a Maths professor and postdoc student) and had a water ballon fight. After our scrumptious dinner we had private study by ourselves and our tutor or the lecturer would come around see how we went with the problems. During the weekend some went to the movies after bowling or ice skating. The Sunday we all went to see Canberra, the museum, Questacon, the War Memorial and art galleries. One terrific part of the camp was the quest speakers; a heart surgeon, ecologist and optimisation programmer. They gave us several interesting talks about how they use maths in their work, all being previous attenders of the Maths Camp as students. Another special aspect of the camp was at evening announcements, we got our tutors and lecturers to each tell a maths joke every night. The experience was unbelievable and unreplicatable, I met several good friends who I'll probably see next year, along with having a better perspective on Mathematics.

  • ON Stage Excurs ion 2017

Students studying HSC Drama in the Rivers Secondary College Community, have recently been on an excursion to Sydney attending ‘On Stage’, the showcase of HSC Drama works from the 2016 cohort. Over two nights at the Seymour Theatre, University of Sydney, we witnessed 20 individual and Group performances of Band 6 quality from around the state. There was also a foyer exhibition which showcased other Individual Projects such as Costume Design, Set Design, Lighting Design, Program and Publicity, etc. Again the quality of work was inspiring. We also had the opportunity to attend Art Express at the Art Gallery of NSW which showcased the most outstanding HSC Visual Arts Projects, as well as visiting Belvoir Street Theatre for a private screening of ‘Stolen’, by Jane Harrison.Congratulations to Kadina Campus students Hannah Oliver and Kashmir Salmon Miller, and all the Richmond River Campus students for conducting themselves so beautifully for the three days.

  • Univers i t y Roadshow

Emily and Aaron meet with Tim from SCU at the University Roadshow where 5 Universities came to Kadina library to discuss future options with very interested students.

By no means was I the most academic student at Kadina High but my time at Kadina has left a lifelong impression of who I have become, forging lasting friendships which continue to this day. I currently work for Southern Cross University in Student Recruitment, graduated Kadina High School in 2002, obtained a Bachelor degree in Sports Science and am currently studying my Masters in Business degree. After perusing a gap year in 2003 I found myself traveling to Europe living mainly in Germany, where I remained for over 7 years. Employment in the sports science sector saw me work at the Winter Olympics in Turin, 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, Le Tour de France and many more international sporting events. After lengthy travels via Asia and the USA I returned to the Northern Rivers in 2013 currently residing in Ballina. I will never forget my time at Kadina High School. The breadth of curriculum enabled me to study my passion in my senior years and the teacher support was second to none. It provided me the foundation to enter into the larger world and pursue my goals. But most of all Kadina gave me memories and mates.
