of ChangeA Time

FOR THE BETTER IN KENYAN TOuRISM

Welcome to the seventh edition of the

KAHC Hotel, Restaurant & Entertain-

ment Guide.

The timing of this edition could not have been

better as we enter a new era, with Kenya having

been completely reborn, when a new consti-

tution was approved in a ‘landslide victory’

referendum. Within the tourism fraternity

this was a significant step which we believe

will create a better business environment and

improvements in investor confidence in Kenya

leading to greater stability and prosperity for the

country’s economy. The new constitution will

replace one dating from Kenya’s independence

in 1963. To Kenyans, it is a historic journey that

began over 20 years ago coming to a happy end.

Kenya had the privilege of hosting two major

events, the 17th CAA African Senior Athletics

Championships and the 56th Commonwealth

Parliamentary Association Conference, which

were both held in Nairobi, with most of the

participants visiting our tourist destinations.

SHOWCASE

The guide has continued to be an informa-

tion platform for members to showcase their

properties and attract potential customers. It is

displayed at the World Travel Market in London

and at ITB Berlin and is used by the Kenya

Tourist Board marketing team for distribution

at various exhibitions all over the world through

our partnership.

We believe you will find this directory a useful

resource in your search for the favourite

spot you would like to visit as you make your

holiday plans.

tations and needs of its visitors.

uNIQuE

The guide provides a good description of the

DiversityAND MAGIC OF KENYA ARE JuST WAITING TO BE DISCOvERED

Page 10: KAHC Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide 2011

As one of Africa’s top destinations, Kenya is

rightly famed for the warm and generous

welcome it affords all visitors. To this should

be added the quality of its accommodation, the

genuine warmth of its hospitality and the high

standards of service graciously and effortlessly

delivered by legions of well trained staff.

These are the qualities that keep visitors

coming back, time after time, to Kenya’s game

parks and beach resorts while ensuring that

Nairobi is the undisputed venue of choice for

regional conferences and exhibitions.

Rather than take this situation for granted,

however, Kenya is making serious efforts to

INTRODuCTION

6

Kenyatta International Conference Centre

(KICC), the city’s attractiveness as a location

for meetings has led to increasing rates and a

scarcity of rooms at certain times.

Rack rates, too, reflect the fact that, as a

business destination, Nairobi is very much on

a par with other capital cities around the world.

Nevertheless, Kenya-based tour operators –

with their strong buying power and detailed

local knowledge – are often able to negotiate

attractive rates for groups and individuals, even

at some of Nairobi’s smartest addresses.

New hotels in the city include the stylish five-

star Sankara Nairobi in Westlands, upper Hill’s

imposing Crowne Plaza and the cleverly posi-

tioned Ole-Sereni, on Mombasa Road, close to

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. All these

hotels offer accommodation in the fresh, contem-

porary style that was first established in Nairobi a

couple of years ago by Tribe at village Market.

These new or nearly new properties are set

against Nairobi’s more established and tradi-

tionally presented hotels such as Fairmont The

OFFERS A HuGE CHOICE OF FINE HOTELS AND RESORTS

ensure that its hospitality industry goes on

growing and that its tourism sector continues to

generate significant foreign exchange earnings.

It is worth noting that tourism is the economy’s

third-largest foreign exchange earner, giving

employment to over 400,000 Kenyans.

BuSINESS

Nowhere is this growth more evident than in

thriving Nairobi, the bustling business capital

of East Africa and the regional headquarters of

choice for many of the world’s leading brands

and corporations along with a list of interna-

tional organisations that includes the united

Nations and the World Bank.

Not only has overall bed capacity here grown

significantly in the past few years – especially at

the top end – but existing hotels have sought

to upgrade their products in order to retain

business and match the offerings of their new

and expensively furnished competitors.

Nevertheless, rooms can still be at a premium

at peak periods. Led by the success of the

Page 11: KAHC Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide 2011

Norfolk and the Southern Sun Mayfair Nairobi

(formerly the Holiday Inn), which trade on their

impeccable colonial roots and their commit-

ment to timeless elegance and discreet service.

Occupying a market position in between the

two are such internationally branded hotels

as the InterContinental and the Hilton, which

provide upmarket accommodation in a more

restrained style for the corporate guest.

visitors also have the option of staying just

outside the city in order to enjoy the tranquil-

lity of the surrounding countryside, travelling

into Nairobi as required. Windsor Golf Hotel

and Country Club, with its challenging 18-hole

championship course, and Karen Blixen Coffee

Garden in Karen are among several options in

this regard.

TOuRISM

The picture is different at the coast, where all-

inclusive package deals are the order of the day.

But even here there are many properties that

eschew mainstream tourism, offering a highly

personalised service and preferring to accept

bookings on an individual basis. This sector

is certainly on the increase as tourists seek to

tailormake their own trips and create their own

hotel bookings via the internet.

Kenya’s coastline is surprisingly diverse and

is far from being a collection of mass-market

resorts. Accommodation ranges from the mainly

boutique-style properties available in Lamu in the

north; then southwards through sophisticated

Malindi – a resort made popular by Italians – to

Watamu with its world-class beach and relaxed

atmosphere; to unspoiled and charming Kilifi

with its delightful creek and sailing community;

to Mtwapa, which has an equally attractive creek;

and then to Mombasa’s North Coast with its

profusion of hotels to suit all tastes and budgets.

Heading south from Mombasa via the Likoni

ferry, one finds a small number of beach

hotels before reaching the strip at Diani which,

like the North Coast, has a varied and increasingly

upmarket selection of properties together with a

range of activities to entertain just about everyone.

Beyond Diani to the south, but still on the

beach road, a few hotels are hidden away in

quiet locations. Further on, via ukunda, one

can head south towards Msambweni and the

border with Tanzania in search of peace and

isolation among a burgeoning group of small

owner-run properties.

ENHANCE

Despite the constant downward pressure on

room rates from voracious tour operators,

coast hotels continue to upgrade and enhance

their product. There are also a few new proper-

ties coming on to the market; but the 142-room

Swahili Beach in Diani, due to start up in 2011,

looks like being the most significant new beach

resort in many years.

Away from Nairobi and the delights of the

coast, hotel accommodation in Kenya’s other

towns and cities can often prove disappointing.

With few exceptions, much needs to be done to

raise standards in these properties.

7Kenya HOTEL, RESTAuRANT & ENTERTAINMENT GuIDE

Yet, scattered across an area to the north

of Nairobi are many fine hotels, such as the

magnificent and refurbished Fairmont Mount

Kenya Safari Club and Outspan in Nyeri as

well as two in Naivasha – the Great Rift valley

Lodge & Golf Resort and the fabulous new

Enashipai Resort & Spa.

It all goes to prove that visitors don’t have to

look too hard or too long to find something

magical in terms of accommodation in East

Africa’s most absorbing and vibrant nation.

Magical Kenya it certainly is.

Page 13: KAHC Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide 2011

Nairobi’s traffic jams are the stuff of legend

and an unpleasant frustration for anyone

trying to get to a meeting or to catch a flight. In

the opposite direction, it’s not uncommon for

arriving visitors to take two or three hours to get

from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)

to their downtown hotel – especially if the hotel in

question is located in Westlands. And if it rains,

which thankfully it doesn’t too often, then an

already intolerable situation is made even worse.

Nairobians tend to be philosophical about the

city’s endless snarl-ups, while finding ever more

ingenious ways to beat the jams. But tourists and

other visitors can be seriously inconvenienced

and the inefficiencies created by the congestion

are thought to cost the Kenyan economy many

millions of dollars each year.

TRAFFIC

All is set to change, however; and while traffic

jams may not be entirely a thing of the past,

congestion will certainly be eased once the city’s

remarkable new road system is completed.

Thanks largely to the Chinese government, which

is providing KES 8.6 billion for the construction of

NAIROBI TRAFFIC

NEW ROAD SYSTEM WILL EASE

the 70 km eastern and northern by-passes, and

with the support of the Japanese, who are funding

the new west ring road, Nairobi will be changed

beyond recognition as elevated roadways and

impressive flyovers appear in and around the city.

IMPROvED

As it is, Mombasa Road, which connects JKIA

with central Nairobi, is much improved in terms

of its road surface. Outside the city, Kenya’s

road network has been dramatically improved

in the past couple of years as poorly maintained

highways have been transformed by foreign

contractors. This has made overland connections

quicker and easier between Nairobi and Narok

(for the Masai Mara), Nairobi and Samburu

(via the Great North Road) and Nairobi and

Mombasa (for the coast). And not before time.

unique features.

ciently identify where each property is located,

find up-to-date contact details and easily differ-

entiate between KAhc members.

able to guests.

tainment Guide regular ecotourism Kenya

members are also given the appropriate logo

to denote that the owners of these properties

subscribe to the general environmental aims

and objectives of the association but may not

as yet have an official eco-rating.

GOLD-rATeD – Gold eco-rating

is an indicator that a facility has

achieved superior and replicable

levels of excellence in responsible resource

use, environmental conservation and socio-

economic investments.

SiLver-rATeD – Silver eco-rating

EnjoyTHE MUSIC AND CULTURAL

RICHNESS OF KENYA

Kenya raha (meaning ‘exploit pleasure’) is a way of describing all that’s fun in Kenya –

bars, nightclubs, discos, water sports, cinemas, casinos, restaurants – after a long safari or business meeting. More and more visitors are aware that Nairobi is the centre of a rich music scene distilling the best that East Africa has to offer. On top of the standard soukous and benga, Nairobi now boasts live fusions of Afro-beat, electronica, R&B and hiphop and some remarkably palatable jazz.

Added to the heady mix of local bands, many Tanzanian musicians have carved a niche in the region, including the upmarket open-air venues of Mombasa, Malindi, Ukunda and Diani in the South Coast.
