The Pierre de Coubertin medal is a special decoration awarded by the International Olympic Committee to those

athletes, former athletes, sports promoters, sporting officials and others who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship in

Olympic events or through exceptional service to the Olympic movement.

The medal was inaugurated in 1964 and named in honour of Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the International Olympic

Committee.

In this edition of Scoop I would like to acknowledge several parents for their valued

support in providing educational support for our students. I realise that there is

always hesitation in identifying groups or individuals, and apologise in advance for

any over-sights.

As one of the SRC’s goals, we have almost completed the ‘catch fence’ for the

COLA area. This was requested by students to prevent the numerous balls that

escape down the front drive each day. We designed a ten-metre curtain system to

address the problem. Mr John Robson has kindly donated the required netting for

the project. Mr Steve Irwin has been also very instrumental in progressing the

project from the planning stage through to obtaining resources and transporting

items. Currently the netting is being reinforced at the local upholstery shop. We anticipate that this will be

completed for the commencement of Term 3.

We have a number of students who have progressed in athletics and will now represent the school at the

Riverina competition. To ensure our students have appropriate sporting clothing for their respected events,

Mrs Rebecca Gould has followed on with her initiative from last year. Mrs Gould has lead the design and

specialised order for the Athletics clothing again for 2018.The clothing is a ‘stand-out’ and further promotes

our school within the region. This is certainly appreciated by students and staff.

One of the sports that our school is highlighting is Lawn Bowls. There are several factors influencing this

emphasis within our sporting program. In consultation with the Batlow Lawn Bowls Club, we are focused

on providing a sporting outlet for our youth in the town, that can attract participants from a range of sporting

abilities and is not constrained by gender. Mrs Margaret Isselmann, in her recent role as Rotary President

also became involved to further complement the marvellous work, which is also occurring within Rotary

Interact. Through a joint venture, both Rotary and Batlow Technology School has purchased four sets of

customised lawn bowls these can be accessed by Batlow Technology School students and available for

lawn bowls competitions for our youth.

The enthusiastic commitment of our students is extremely noticeable, with Batlow Technology School

entering two teams in the CHS State-wide school competition. These teams showcase both boys and girls

from across all secondary year groups. Mr Kass has been able to organise community members with

extensive bowling skills and experience to coach the students over the last three weeks. Thank you to Dick

Sedgwick, Ronnie Rynehart and Melissa Mende for venturing down to the Bowling Club on those frosty

mornings.

Our debating teams have been challenging fiercely throughout the region. Their developing skills are very

encouraging with adjudicators making very positive comments on the teams’ preparation and arguments.

The fantastic coaching from Mr Bell and Mrs Beattie is really providing our students with a unique

experience. The junior team achieved their first win in Tumut last week and all members were truly excited

with the team and individual achievements.

The school reporting process has been hampered through software issues provided externally. We

understand the value of providing timely feedback to assist in your child’s education. All staff have been

working tirelessly to rectify an unfortunate situation which is beyond our control. If you would like specific

information on your child’s progress at any time, please make arrangements to discuss with teachers or

Year Advisers. These can be made by contacting the office.

A reminder that students return Tuesday 24 July 2018 for the commencement of Term 3.

Last Friday I went to Sydney to receive the Pierre de

Coubertin Award. On the day we listened to three

Olympians talk about their journeys to the Olympics

and why they decide to go and also the setbacks

they faced before and during.

Towards the end of the day we learned how to do

boxing properly. I really enjoyed the day. It was a

great experience and I learnt a lot about resilience

and what it takes to make it through the hard times.

RIVERINA CROSS COUNTRY

On Friday 15 June 2018, Jack Gould, Rayleigh Gould, Riley Gould, Ryley Collins and

Alvin Lengronne competed at the CHS Riverina Cross Country, held in Gundagai. All

students competed extremely well and put their all into their races. Alvin Lengronne

competed in 13 boys 3000m and placed 27th out of 40 boys, being his first regional

carnival he did really well. Rayleigh Gould ran in the 13 girls 3000m and earned a very

hard fought 23rd out of 43 girls.

Later on in the day, Riley Gould raced in the 12 years Boys 3000m and placed 1st, a

very successful and dominant win over his age group, leading the whole way.

Jack Gould competed in the 15 years Boys 4000m and

maintained his victory from last year by winning the 4000m and

having plenty left in the tank. Ryley Collins raced in the longest

event on the day, 16 years Boys 6000m. Ryley ran enormously

well and placed 4th.

Riley Gould, Ryley Collins and Jack Gould (photographed) all

qualified for the NSW All Schools Cross Country to be held on

16 July 2018 Eastern Creek, Sydney.

TRIPLES LAWN BOWLS COMPETITION

On Tuesday 3 July 2018, our Batlow Technology School bowls team travelled to Wagga Wagga for the first

round of the 2018 bowls competition. Myself (Tahlia), Morgan Mende, Connor Taylor, Dylan Bates, Dylan

Taylor, Savannah Cooper and Ethan Brooke-Irwin were the Batlow team and participated in the event.

(Photographed below left).

We were split up into two separate groups, Group A and Group B. Both teams played very well and we all

played against three teams on the day, Group A managed to take 2nd place to Coolamon and will be

moving on to the second round of bowls in Dubbo. (photographed below right) Group B came in third and

we were very proud of our success, we all had lots of fun and cheered each other on throughout the day.

We had a really good time. Good Job! Batlow Technology School Bowls team 2018.

Batlow Technology School would like to thank the Rotary Club of Batlow for their generous donation

towards the new set of bowls.

BATLOW MUSEUM EXCURSION

Kindergarten and Year 1 students ventured out on Tuesday 3 July 2018, to visit the Batlow Museum. It was

an opportunity for students to see some of the old artefacts that Batlow has to offer, which we have been

discussing in the history unit on the past and the present.

When we returned students shared what their favourite experience at the museum was:

Tobi, Ben, Caitlin and William – “The Fire Engine”

Bailee – “Old and new technology”

Jake – “The bell, old saws and bullets”

Ana – “The bell”

Juno – “Seeing photos of my grandfather and his medals”

Brian - “The trophies”

Brodie – “All the dangerous stuff”

Emily – “Dancing in front of the old mirror with Lily”

Lily – “Seeing the big movie projector from the Literary Institute”

Cody – “All the old tools”

Dylan – “Lots of old bottles and matches and the whole church”

Brock – “The trophies and the bullets”

Harlee – “Everything but my favourite part was the old phone”

To celebrate Education Week the school will be holding a Book Fair in

Week three of next term. We would like to invite parents, grandparents and

community members to come along and purchase some great books.

The school receives a commission on the book sales so it is a great way to

supplement our library. There will be more details on next term on

Skoolbag and the school’s Facebook page. Hope to see you there!

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is on at Batlow Technology School. The Read-a-thon was a

quiet success with the participants all saying that they loved the extended reading time without

interruption.

The winter holidays are the perfect time for reading so hide under the blankets to play quiditch at

Hogwarts, or to wrestle with a talking lion in Narnia, or to battle for your life in the Hunger Games,

or to meet the gorilla in Anthony Browne’s Willy the Wimp or just to hang out with Angeline and

Edgar in Ghost Club.

Discover the local Library for Adventure!

These great books can be found at the Library where

Robert will be delighted to help you. These great

challenge books can also be found at the libraries in

Tumut or Wagga and remember that books borrowed

in other Riverina libraries can easily be returned at the

library in Batlow.
