Dear Parents and Guardians
I’m pleased to inform you that the Council of
International Schools (CIS) Five Year Visit
went very smoothly last week from 22 to 25
May. Our two visitors Ray Davis from CIS
and Linda Lyons from Bendigo Senior
College worked tirelessly to validate our Five
Year Report. A very large number of staff,
students and the School Council President,
David Denny, were interviewed as part of
this process. Before departing on Friday
afternoon the visitors met with the Principal
Team and passed on some very positive
feedback. I look forward to sharing the
visitor’s formal report in the near future. It
has been a most valuable opportunity for
fresh eyes to review our progress over the
past five years.
Exams Next Week
All students in Years 8 to 12 will participate
in mid-year Exams and Tests next week.
Year 7s will participate in the Semester 2
exams scheduled for November. Exams and
tests remain an important element of
assessment. It is important for all students
to have practice and experience in sitting
exams. To be successful, students must
learn to perform effectively under exam
conditions in all VCE studies. In the VCE,
poor performance in the exam will result in
other school based assessments being
reduced. In other areas of life, it is certainly
a benefit to have experience in exam
situations, e.g. sitting the theory component
of a driving test. We know that the more
students practice something – the better
they will get at it. Please encourage your
child to revise thoroughly for their coming
exams and approach them with a positive
attitude.

VCAL News Intermediate Work Related Skills Task:
Recently the Intermediate VCAL classes made piz-
zas as part of their WRS course. Under the direction
of Ms Reynolds and Ms Murphy, the classes created
their culinary delights, even making their own
dough. They were also able to demonstrate how to
work safely, carefully navigating the various poten-
tial hazards in a commercial kitchen. Both classes
took great pride in their creations, even if they didn’t
stay on their plates for very long!
Senior VCAL Personal Development Skills
RACV Transmission program : Kambrya does very well !
Senior VCAL PDS students participated in this program for their project in Term 1. RACV
Transmission is based on a class project that requires students to analyse a road safety issue
related to young road users. Students developed a Community Service Announcement (CSA)
for television with the winning entry from the state being screened on television.
Through the program, students:
• selected one of the road safety topics and investigated its impact
• analysed data and gathered evidence to support the development and presentation of the
road safety message
• communicated safe and responsible road use and attitudes to the target audience
• presented their concept using a storyboard and script.
Our students did very well in their projects at school and submission from 5 groups have been
selected by RACV to go in the semi -finals for this competition. These students were invited to
attend a workshop at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on 30th May, 2013.
Channel 7 personality, Peter Mitchell was the guest speaker and various people from the
media and advertising production team were the presenters. These sessions gave students
more ideas and built skills which they will be using to re-submit their messages for the final.
This was very motivational, professional and personal development workshop our students and
we wish them the very best for the next stage of competition.
Cross Country Carnival
Senior VCAL PDS students help to organise a carnival to run alongside the Cross country
carnival at the school on 16th of May for students in Years 7 to 10. Through this project,
students met the other outcomes for semester 1. Despite bad weather, this carnival was a great
success.
Students organised a number of activities to cater for the different interests of the Kambrya
student body. Some of these activities were just for fun and others to raise money for the needy.
They made cookies to sell, sold Frog in a Ponds, had Lolly Jar Guess competition and a group
sold jelly in a jar and chocolates. A Target board with darts and prizes was another activity. A
group organised BBQ, others did photography and a group did the Guitar hero competition.
Students demonstrated excellent planning and organising skills, communication and
leadership skills and also worked well in teams
All students in Years 7 to 10 participated well in these activities and we would like to
congratulate these VCAL students who raised over $840 that will be donated towards Breast
Cancer Research. Congratulations on an excellent day under testing conditions!

Designer Visit from Industry
As part of the VCE Visual Communication Design course students found out first-hand about
the design industry from Nick Russo. Nick spoke to the year 11 and 12 students on the 15th of
May about his professional experience as a graphic designer and how his career has given him
the opportunity to work with a variety of companies. He brought in a range of visual
communications from logos to posters and some beverage products, including all the
designs he created for the
Summer Snow Apple Juice
range. Nicks knowledge has
proved invaluable allowing
students to understand the
professional practice and how
they can apply the processes
and techniques to create their
own work.

English Years 8-12. In the spotlight: EXAMS.
Year 12 Biology
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) recently visited
Kambrya to conduct immunology experiments as part of Year 12 VCE Biology. This session was
also attended by Senator Don Farrell the Minister for Science and Research and Laura Smyth
Federal Member for La Trobe, who both took the opportunity to work with the students.
Students had the opportunity to conduct a biotechnology test called the ELISA technique
( Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) . ELISA investigates the role of the specific immune
system and differentiates it’s function from that of the non-specific immune system. It is used
extensively in immunological research and diagnostic analysis.
Students also conducted a blood typing experiment. In this experiment they determined the
blood type of unknown samples. This allowed them to understand the importance of blood typing
in terms of transfusions in the medical world.
The session was a great success and gave students the opportunity to work with complex
laboratory equipment, allowing them to practice Key Skills and consolidate their learning.
Ms Laura Smyth commented afterwards on what an exceptional and engaged group of students
were in the class.

MONASH UNIVERSITY NEWS –
The Faculty of Arts – introducing a new
course structure in 2014. The changes are de-
signed to give students a deeper understand-
ing and appreciation of the area in which they
specialise. More emphasis will be on how to ap-
ply their knowledge and to develop re-
search skills. Three categories of study will be
introduced to complete a ‘major’ – gateway,
cornerstone and capstone. These are chosen key
subjects which must be taken in a student’s major
area of study. Join the Arts Facebook page at:
www.facebook.com/MonashArts
The Bachelor of Architecture/Master of Archi-
tecture has a new entry process from 2014.
There will be a pre-selection activity and an
interview, and the maths prerequisite will be
removed. The ATAR will still be important but
the pre-selection activity and interview will pro-
vide additional ways for students to demon-
strate their ability. In the pre-selection activity
students will respond to an issue through text and
image (not about assessing design or drawing ex-
pertise). The interview is a chance to share your
story and to say why you want to study architec-
ture. After applying for the course through the
Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) in
term 3, applicants will receive a pre-selection ac-
tivity to complete by 11 October. Based on this,
they may be invited to an interview. Their appli-
cation will be assessed on their ATAR, pre-
selection activity and their performance in the
interview. See: www.artdes.monash.edu/architecture/
