“KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio “KAR” July 2016 newsletter http://ksarrl.org/ [email protected] Hi gang, It is a battle to keep the water from building up in my body. No salt!! No soda pop and etc. Last time I said I would tell you about running in to Harry, so here it is............. u In 1956 I was servicing Gray Autograph dictating machines in office buildings down town. I was driving an Olds 98 and pulled into the 7th and Walnut parking lot. I got out and went around to the passenger side and got my tool kit out of the front seat. It was like what the typewriter guys carried. I backed up and shut the door, turned around and found myself belly to belly with some one. Could not see his face cuz he was too short and I was looking at the top of his head. I stepped back and began sputtering and finally, hi Harry came out. Yep, Mr. President! He just laughed and the SS guy went nuts. Harry liked to drive and not be driven. The old film crews with the huge film cameras spent a lot of time in that lot. In 1959 I went to work for the Baldwin factory store as Electronic Organs svc mgr at 1015 Grand (now a parking lot) and Harry had his officce close by and came in and played the Grands in our Grand Room. u I had a wonderful surprise. Paul Sykes KØXR (WNØKWI) who I had not seen for 40 years sent me a email asking to stop by for an eye-ball QSO. We spent 2+ hours going down memory lane . Right out of high school he went to General Motors and a program where he worked on the “line” a semester and than a semester in GM's Electrical Engineering College. Paul at 55 is head EE at the Fairfax GM plant in KC,Ks today and responsible for a lot of EEs who keep the car assembly line moving. Just think, one $3500 car a minute coming off the line and it stops. I always started my new hams off on “Traffic Handling” and Paul was very good at it and got his “Brass Pounders Medallion (see below). Includes is the only photo I have of him. Than he discovered DXing and I lost a tfc handler, hi hi. The photo does not say he is a great CW Op, but he was. He belonged to a group who had 3 – 80' (?) towers with beams on them and a small shack close to Paola, Ks. He melted down a Dentron Amp cuz his CW duty cycle was like RTTY. Did not hurt the finals. At 17 Paul designed and built his own FULL KW amp. I remember him scrounging parts. When he got it on the air, he had a huge extra power transformer left over. I loved working with 14 year old-ers. NO CAR!!

Hi gang, It is a battle to keep the water from building up in my body. No salt!! No soda pop and etc. Last time I said I would tell you about running in to Harry, so hereit is.............

u In 1956 I was servicing Gray Autograph dictating machines in office buildings down town. I was driving an Olds 98 and pulled into the 7th and Walnut parking lot. I got out and went around to the passenger side and got my tool kit out of the front seat. It was like what the typewriter guys carried. The old film crews with the huge film cameras spent a lot of time in that lot. In 1959 I went to work for the Baldwin factory store as Electronic Organs svc mgr at

1015 Grand (now a parking lot) and Harry had his officce close by and came in and played the Grands in our Grand Room.

u I had a wonderful surprise. Here is what ARRL says it takes today to earn your BPL Medallion..............

Brass Ponders LeagueThe Brass Ponders League is open to all amateurs in the US, Canada and US possessions who report to their Section Managers a total of 500 or more points or a sum of 100 or more origination and delivery points for any calendar month. Messages must be handled on amateur radio frequencies within 48 hours of receipt in standard ARRL radiogram format.

A description of how an individual radio amateur should properly count traffic handling points (for his or her monthly Station Activity Report and also for the monthly Brass Ponders League credit) may be found in the ARRL Public Service Communications Manual – and specifically at via this Web page link:http://www.arrl.org/chapter-ten-counting-net-traffic

u Like I said, I love to teach 14 year old-ers and I did. In 1959 I had a group of them in my garage every Saturday night and they took Grand First Award as a Jr group at the Science Fair in 1960 with a computer they built. Two of them got their PhD's form Cal-tech in Nuclear Physics. Gary is retired from teaching college and his brother Mark lives right here in in Jo Co and was in the news paper recently about him computing radiation dosages for cancer patients for several hospitals. Gary is leaning on the table below.

I have another group, all hams and one of them with a doctorate, Jim Todd. A year ago I got a 4 page hand written letter from one of my 14 year old hams now retired from our US Navy. I have showed it only to a few close friends. Publishing it makes me uneasy cuz it makes me feel I am bragging. I make it available on request. I would make a KAR Special out of it if there was enough interest. Mike tells how CW (code) he learned to get his Novice license got his ship back in action. He had to use blinking CW light to talk to another ship and get a emergency CW transceiver out of a lifeboat to get the job done.

Yep, I have another group but much older. I have taught the Bible for many years. No! I am not religious, a religion is a THING and Jesus is a PERSON, God in flesh. I made Jesus my Lord and Savior on Pearl Harbor Day 1960. I don't teach religions. His name is Jesus and I am riding out our problems waiting for His soon return.

WA0GCN- Jack Rowlett, Paola is now a Silent Key-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Field Day is here ! The most popular operating event in Amateur Radiois this weekend. If you have never participated in Field Day with aclub or group I encourage you to spend some time with them. There isnothing quite like the experiences you can have setting up andoperating a station in the field with a bunch of other hams. Field Dayencompasses many disciplines of both Amateur Radio and disasteroperations. If you have not been on HF you may experience HF overload. Many clubs have a GOTA station for newcomers. An experienced operatoris assigned to assist newcomers to help you get your radio legs. Usedto call this the Novice station.

u In My Seat Please take the time to watch this video. I doubt that you have ever seen it before. It is about a pilot who was supposed to be on American Airlines Flight 11 the morning of 9/11. Flight 11 was the first Boeing 767 to fly into one of the buildings at the World Trade Center on 9/11. It is unlike anything I have seen, read or heard about 9/11. It really is one incredible story that must be shared. https://www.youtube.com/embed/cLj4akmncsA

Brinkley Larry, I have a 35 mm slide and cassette tape program titled "The History of Radio" produced by Sherwood (Sherry) Parks of KINA radio in Salina years ago. It was later shown by Wendell Wilson WØTQ (sk). I got the program from Wendell's daughter last year. Wendell has been gone for 10 years or so. I am now the "keeper" of the material.I showed the program at the Kansas ARRL Convention in Salina last year at the pre-convention dinner and as a convention program on Sunday. It has a LOT of info on Brinkley and his ventures in radio broadcasting and his moving to Ciudad Acuna and starting XER radio, later to become XERF, (home of'Wolfman Jack').I am working converting it to DVD to be more flexible in viewing. There is also a short series on Brinkley in the 'Sunflower Journeys' (Cat. No. 1304) series produced by KTWU, Ch 11 in Topeka, a station of Washburn Univ. u Subject: [LarrysList] 18 Wheeler Hi Larry, Here is one for “LL”. Your “LL” 18 wheeler postings has brought back fond memories of 20+ years ago. Mike, KØPY at Wichita use to drive a 18 wheeler and “CW County Hunt” at the same time, one hand on the wheel and the other on the key. He did not do it to long cuz it took all of his week ends to fill out the cards and $$ postage to mail them. I have run (NCS) the ARRL NTS Ks CW tfc net (3547 kHz nightly 7 and 10pm) while mobile but my wife was driving, hi hi. So has a lot of Novices back in the 1970s. My son Kevin NØFNL was one who got his Novice license when he was 14 and was copying 40WPM in his head at 15. He loves the midnight CW shifts at Field Day, just key and rig. The best 2 U all,

u I will - see, it's the 73rd. anniversary of my natal occurence... on a very dark night (WW-II "blackout")* in San Francisco. Dad had a hell of a time, trying to get her up to the street from inside a movie theatre on Market St, then because of the wartime blackout, he couldn't get a cab.. 5 sailors, standing outside on the curb, saw what was happening, and asked "Whatsamatter, Mister?".. he told 'em that Mom was gonna deliver pretty damned quick, and he needed help (added.. "If her brothers were here, they sure would.. they're Navy!").. that did the trick, and from what I've been told all these years, the sailors got out in the middle of Market St.. DID stop a cab with a guy in it - talked him into giving up the cab, and they rode ON THE RUNNING BOARDS, to the hospital, yelling at people to get out of the way... upon arrival, they found the doors LOCKED.. so they carried Mom up several flights of stairs until they found an unlocked door, and got her in... After getting her checked in and such, Pop looked for them, and they'd left - he never got to thank them.. but his "kid".. well, I guess I got to, after all... didn't I? Tom
