LONG BALL DROPS KC BACK TO .500--For the second consecutive game here in Fenway Park, the home run ball in the sixth inning was the deciding blow as Kansas City lost a 2-1 decision to drop back to 48-48 on the year...just 24 hours after Jonny Gomes doomed the Royals with a pinch-hit blast, Royal pain Mike Napoli hit his 10th career home run off of KC pitching to break the 1-1 deadlock in the sixth, the same frame that did in the Royals the night before...Danny Duffy was the tough-luck losing hurler, giving up an unearned run in the fourth that tied the game and then surrendering Napoli’s blast...KC had its share of chances, but the lone tally came across in the third when Jarrod Dyson led off with a triple and scored on Omar Infante’s sac fly...the Royals wound up 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position...Eric Hosmer singled in his first at bat of the night to extend his big league leading hitting streak to 15 games. KC IN NEED OF DIRECTIONAL CHANGE--Last night’s loss was the second in a row to open the post-break slate and the fifth in the last six games...since having their 10-game winning streak halted in Detroit on June 19, entering play that day with a 1 1/2-game lead in the Central, the Royals have gone just 9-16 and have dropped to 6.0 games behind the Tigers... oddly enough, Kansas City picked up a half-game in the standings last night after Detroit lost both ends of a doubleheader to Cleveland, who moved to just 4 1/2 games behind the division leaders. ANOTHER SINGLE TALLY LOSS--You don’t realize how good you had it until you don’t have it anymore, which is the case of the difference between last year and this year in one-run decisions...last night’s loss to the BoSox was the second straight in this series and eighth in the last 10 to drop Kansas City to 10-20 in one- run games this year...just a season ago, KC won an American League best 31 one-run affairs...last night was the ninth game the Royals have played that ended in a 2-1 final, but Kansas City has gone just 2-7 in those affairs. DAVIS CONTINUES MOUND ROLL--Wade Davis made his first post-break appearance last night and contributed his typical 1-2-3 inning, the 18th time this year that he’s tossed a perfect inning...Wade has retired the last 18 hitters he’s faced since walking the Angels’ Josh Hamilton to open the eighth inning on June 29...Davis has also retired 21 of the last 22 batters he’s faced since last allowing a run on June 25...that’s the lone run he’s surrendered in his last 30.1 innings for a 0.30 ERA in that span...he is the only pitcher in the Majors with more than 4 appearances who hasn’t allowed an extra-base hit this season...Davis now has 38 appearances and 40.2 innings...since surrendering a season-high 2 earned runs back on April 5, Wade has given up only two runs over his last 34 outings (36.1 innings) for a 0.50 ERA with opponents hitting just .099 (12-for-121) while fanning 58...the .099 batting average is the best in the Majors for any hurlers with at least 30.0 innings pitched since April 6. NEXT SOX RESIDE IN CHICAGO--This series against the Red Sox ends today and then the Royals head west to Chicago and the land of the White Sox...KC will be there for a 3-pack that ends with a Wednesday matinee...despite a pair of defeats here, Kansas City has played its best baseball away from Kauffman Stadium this year, going 26-23 on the road, one of three clubs with a losing home record and winning road ledger (Yankees and Mariners)...Kansas City has had three straight winning road trips and four out of the last five with the only losing excursion in that span a 1-2 single-city stop in Anaheim in late-May...the Royals are 13-7 in their last 20 road games...once this 6-game road trip has concluded, Kansas City will have played 15 of 19 games on the road. This & ThatFEW REVIEWS OF LATE--Manager Ned Yost has issued only one replay challenge since June 29 and wound up losing that one via the “stands” determination on July 11...despite that mini-setback, Kansas City went 17-8 with its challenges during the unofficial first half, including making good on nine of its last 11 reviews...KC’s 17 replay overturns are the most among the 30 clubs...Kansas City’s opposing managers haven’t been nearly as successful, going 10-12 to date...of the 25 challenges involving Kansas City, only one has been confirmed while seven were ruled “stands.”

HOZ ROLLS ON--The Kansas City first baseman singled in his first at bat last night to extend his already career-best hitting streak to 15 games, the longest active streak in the Majors...already four more games than his previous career best, he has established a team high for 2014, three more games than Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon who each hit safely in a dozen straight...this streak began on the final day of June and he is batting .417 (25-for-60) with 9 runs scored, 6 doubles, 2 homers and 8 walks for an on-base pct. of .485 and an impressive OPS during the streak of 1.102...this hitting streak has jumped Hoz’s season average 26 points to .272...since June 24, Hosmer has reached base safely in 19 of 20 games by either a hit or walk...Friday night’s 3-hit effort was his eighth of the season, matching Sal Perez for second most by a Royal this year (Lorenzo Cain has nine)...this marks the longest streak by a Royal since Perez’s 17-game in 2012.

SAVES CHANCES FEW AND FAR BETWEEN--Two-time All-Star, Greg Holland, hasn’t had many opportunities to ply his trade of late, getting just two save opportunities in the last 17 games and making good on each of those chances, the most recent a week ago today in the pre-break finale vs. Detroit...despite the save drought over the last three weeks, Holly is still second in the American League in rescues with 25, just two behind Fernando Rodney...a first time All-Star in 2013, Holland has made good on 65 of his last 67 (97.0%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has one more save than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 63) and has allowed just 11 earned runs in 85.2 innings for a 1.16 ERA.

2013 STARTING TO CATCH UP--The Royals finished last season 10 games over the .500 mark, thanks to a second half that saw Kansas City win more games (43) after the All-Star break than any other American League team and finished second only to the Dodgers’ 45 post-break wins...KC enters today with a 48-48 ledger for 2014 compared to a 45-51 record after 96 games last year (46-51 after 97)...it was during this stretch last year that the club reeled off nine straight wins...this was only the second time since 1996 that Kansas City entered the All-Star break with a winning record, the other occurring in 2003 when the Royals were 51-41 to conclude the unofficial first half...the 2013 Royals didn’t post their 48th win until July 25 in their 100th game (#49 in game #101).

NEXT STOP, CHI-TOWN--Kansas City will leave here following today’s tilt and head to Chicago for a 3-game set in U.S. Cellular Field starting tomorrow night...the series will consist of night games the first two days and then a 1:10 matinee in the finale on Wednesday...the Royals are 6-3 vs. the ChiSox this year, including a 3-game sweep in “The Cell” in mid-June...dating back to last year, KC has gone 10-1 in the last 11 games contested in the Windy City.

LONG STRETCH OF ROAD WORK--Maybe it’s a good thing that the Royals are in an extended stretch of hotel stays, since the club has assembled 26-23 record away from “The K”, one of three big league teams with a losing home record and winning road mark (Yankees and Mariners also)...dating back to June 30 when KC opened a 9-game journey in Minneapolis, the club will be on the road for 21 of 31 games, playing only nine home games in July...the schedule will flip starting on August 8 when the “Bay Area” homestand begins with a 3-game visit from the San Francisco Giants followed by four with the Oakland A’s...from that point, Kansas City will be at home for 17 of 26 games, which includes a make-up contest at “The K” with the New York Yankees on August 25 (6:10 p.m.).

WORK WITH THE EAST--Despite last night’s outcome, Kansas City has gone 14-11 vs. the East...the Royals are 18-22 overall against A.L. Central, with the majority of that deficit occurring against the Tigers as KC has gone just 4-9 vs. Detroit...Kansas City started the year 5-15 within the Central, but then rebounded to go 12-2 over a 14-game span to battle back to .500 vs. the Central before dropping 5 of the last 6...KC is 8-11 vs. the West and 8-4 against the National League...the Royals haven’t enjoyed a winning mark in Interleague play since the 2008 season when they went 13-5...the next National League duty will take place on August 5-7 in Arizona.

ROYALS PRESENT FOR JETER SALUTE--The New York Yankees announced on Friday that their recognition of the career of team captain, Derek Jeter, will take place in Yankee Stadium on Sunday, September 7, prior to the finale of a 3-game series between the Royals and Yankees...Kansas City has yet to salute the future Hall of Fame shortstop because Mother Nature intervened on June 9, raining out that night’s contest...the Royals will salute the Yankees’ captain on Monday, August 25 in a with a make-up game at 6:10 p.m.

BACK ON TOP IN THEFTS--The Royals have been on a bit of a run on the bases to retake the American League stolen base lead with 80, three more than second place Houston...Kansas City has pilfered 14 bags in the last 13 games with only one caught stealing in that stretch...the Royals have also pilfered 25 bags in their last 28 tries spanning the last 21 games...KC’s 80.0 stolen base success rate is first among the 17 big league clubs with at least 70 tries (80-for-100).

A TOP RATED THIEF--Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar has been one of the most successful base thieves in baseball over the past three seasons and enters tonight fourth in the American League with 22 thefts, the first Royals to pilfer at least 20 bags in four consecutive seasons since Willie Wilson did it over 13 straight campaigns from 1978-90...not only is Esky once again among the top thieves in the league, he’s been the most successful in the Major Leagues over the past three seasons, successfully stealing at a 91.9% clip (79-for-86) since the start of 2012, which is the highest among all thieves with at least 40 attempts...he’s been thrown out just twice in his last 52 attempts.
