THREE NOT QUITE ENOUGH VS. FENWAY NEMESIS--The Royals accomplished something last night in the series opener here that they’d never done before, plate more than one run in a game off of Jon Lester, but a seventh inning rally by Boston staked the Sox to a 4-3 decision...Kansas City entered the contest scoring a total of two runs in five previous Lester outings here, totaling 37.1 innings, but matched that total in the third inning alone on a home run by Eric Hosmer and run scoring double by Alex Gordon, tying the score at 2-2...the Royals then took the lead in the fourth when Johnny Giavotella’s bases loaded infield hit plated another run, but KC left the sacks full and that would be the end of the scoring...meanwhile, Boston turned a pair of 0-2 pitches from reliever Kelvin Herrera into big hits in the seventh, the backbreaker a looping double just over third base by Pedro Ciriaco to stick Herrera with his second loss of the year...Bruce Chen provided a “quality” start by working 6.0 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits, but a leadoff walk in the seventh forced him out of the game and that runner eventually scored...KC is now 1-3 on this trip with three to play. COLLINS WITH A “K”--Worcester native, Tim Collins, who just turned 23 years old on Tuesday, continued his stretch of striking out the opposition by recording a pair of strikeouts around an intentional walk in his relief appearance last night...the 5’ 7” southpaw has recorded strikeouts in 10 of his last 11 outs, with a Matt Joyce groundout on Wednesday the only non-K in that span...Collins leads all American League relievers with 83 strikeouts, 14 more than Seattle’s Tom Wilhelmsen, while also topping those relievers with at least 50.0 innings pitched in strikeouts per 9-innings with 12.38...Tim has already established a club record for strikeouts by a lefthanded reliever, surpassing Andrew Sisco’s 2003 mark of 76 in 2005 and he’s now honing in on the overall club standard for a reliever of 103 set by Jim York in 1971, the club’s third year of existence. SPEED THRILLS--The Royals have a pair among the stolen base elite with Alcides Escobar ranking fifth in the American League with 25 and Jarrod Dyson right behind him with 24, tied for sixth best in the loop...Escobar is just a theft shy of matching his career best established last year, his first with Kansas City, after pilfering only 14 bags during his stint with Milwaukee...among base thieves with at least 20 bags, Dyson ranks fourth in stolen base pct. with an 88.9 success rate (24-for- 27), while Esky his fifth with an 86.2 mark (25-for-29)...since the beginning of the 2011 season, Ned Yost’s first full year at the helm, the Royals ranks third in all of baseball in stolen bases with 248, trailing only San Diego (284) and Tampa Bay (263). BUSY STRETCH--Last night kicked off a span of 17 games in as many days as the Royals have only 38 games left on the 2012 docket...the remaining schedule features 15 road affairs and 23 in Kauffman Stadium...this 4-game stop in Boston will conclude play against the American League East with the Royals here through Monday...KC is currently 15-19 against the East...the Royals will resume intra-division play within the Central when they return home next week, hosting Detroit (3) and Minnesota (3) before the A.L. West leading Rangers hit town for four to complete the 10-game stay...all told, the Royals have 27 of their remaining 38 within the Central and 7 vs. the West. Royals vs. Red Sox Last night was the first of four here, with the season set now knotted at 2-2...the all-time series between these clubs is now dead even at 217-217, though KC trailes by a 97-120 margin in Fenway. BURLINGTON CLINCHES DIVISION--The Burlington Royals, who clinched a playoff berth on Wednesday night, clinched the Appalachian League East Division and will begin the playoffs on the road next Wednesday, August 29, vs. the second place team from the West Division...the Royals will then return home to host Game 2 on Thursday and Game 3 (if necessary) on Friday...Burlington is the second affiliate to ice a division title as the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA) clinched its second consecutive division crown with last week 17 games remaining in the season and will have the opportunity to defend their Pacific Coast League crown of a season ago.

OFFENSE SCUFFLING ON TRIP--Kansas City left home last Sunday night riding a 12-6 mark in August and hitting a collective .268 as a team during the month with an on-base pct. of .320 and a .420 slugging pct...those numbers have taken a hit through the first four games of this road swing that started in Tropicana Field and a 1-2 set vs. the Rays and continued here last night...KC has batted just .187 (25-for-134) to start this week-long journey, with two doubles, a triple, a home run and eight runs scored...the team on-base pct. for the four games is .227 and the slugging stands at .239...prior to last night, the Royals have hit at a .274 clip (130-for-475) in their last 13 games played here in Fenway Park with 63 runs scored (4.8 per game) and a .425 slugging pct.

ZIMMER HAS CHIPS REMOVED--Right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer, the club’s 2012 first-round selection, underwent a minor surgical procedure on Thursday in Kansas City at the KU Medical Center to remove loose bodies from his right elbow...Royals’ trainer, Nick Kenney, said “this procedure was anticipated for Kyle upon physical exam during the draft selection process, so it did not come as a surprise and we do not anticipate this procedure will alter any of Kyle’s off-season preparation for the 2013 season.”...the 20-year-old Zimmer has pitched with Surprise (R) and Kane County (A) this season, combining for a 3-3 record with a 2.04 ERA in nine starts...over 39.2 innings, the 6-foot-3 right-hander struck out 42 and walked eight, allowing just one home run...Zimmer was selected by the Royals as the fifth-overall pick on June 4 in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Francisco and signed three days later on June 7

“QUALITY” WORK OF LATE--Despite back-to-back setbacks, Kansas City starting pitchers have provided “quality starts” in 8 of their last 10 games...the starters have compiled an impressive 2.54 ERA in the last 10 games, posting a 6-4 mark, allowing just 18 earned runs in 63.2 innings while the opposition has batted just .199 (45-for-226).

PEN SOLID TOO--The Kansas City relief corps has been one of the best in baseball since July 31, a stretch in which the Royals have gone a collective 14-9 over a 23-game span...the Royals relievers have compiled a 1.89 ERA (13 earned runs in 62.0 innings) with 67 strikeouts, the third lowest overall ERA in baseball since July 31, trailing only Tampa Bay’s 1.16 and Atlanta at 1.53 in that span.

EXTENDED STAY AHEAD--The Royals return to Kauffman Stadium for a 10-game, 3-team homestand starting Tuesday night when the Detroit Tigers hit town for a 3-game set...they’ll be followed to town by Minnesota for a 3-gamer and then the stay will wrap-up when A.L. West leading Texas returns to “The K” for a 4-game set starting with a Labor Day matinee on September 3...the Royals have some making up to do against the Tigers, going just 1-7 against Detroit to this point, including an 0-3 mark in KC.

BILLY CLIMBS TEAM CHARTS--Royals designated hitter Billy Butler had his seventh infield hit of the season last night as the 26-year old has already made his presence felt on KC’s all-time offensive list...by collecting his 900th hit last week (now at 904), he’s now 10th all-time on Kansas City’s hit list, passing Carlos Beltran (899) and the second youngest in franchise history to attain 900 at 26 years, 122 days, trailing George Brett, who eclipsed 900 at 25 years, 357 days...next for Billy is his 100th career home run after hitting #99 at home on August 17 vs. the White Sox...he has recorded the most home runs by a Royal since Carlos Beltran connected for 26 in 2003...Butler is already in the top 10 all-time in average (3rd, .298), slugging pct. (4th, .466), on-base pct. (5th, .361), doubles (8th, 203), RBI (10th, 452) and 12th in homers (99), 4 shy of 11th-place Mike Macfarlane (103).
