YEAR 9 COURSE INFORMATIONThis booklet provides you with information on the Year 9 Curriculum to be offered at Karamu High School in 2019.All schools are required by the New Zealand Curriculum to offer students each of the following seven Essential Learning Areas.
• English • Mathematics• Science• Social Studies• Physical Education and Health• Technology• The Arts
In addition, it is recommend that students also study a language. Karamu High School offers both Japanese and Te Reo Maori.It is part of Karamu High School’s Policy that all Year 9 students will study Oral Communication for one term. This study provides essential communication skills for life.

Students at Year 9 take all the Compulsory Courses and choose eight Option Subjects from the list below.

Science
Compulsory Subject Science is a compulsory subject at Year 9, 10 and 11.
A group of accelerate students is selected to study towards a full NCEA Science course
from Year 10. In Year 11 these students specialise in Level One Physics, Chemistry and
Biology.
At Year 12 and 13 students can specialise in one or more of the Science subjects.
