From the Principal Hello Everyone, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to Kardinya PS for Term 2. We have certainly had an unusual start to the term, with some students learning at school and some learning at home due to the COVID-19 Virus. No matter where your children are learning, we are pleased to have you back. We are looking forward to lots of wonderful learning opportunities at Kardinya PS this term. We have made many changes to provide a safe school for students and staff. We are all learning to do things a bit differently, especially taking a step back to keep a good distance. It has been wonderful to see older siblings taking on the responsibility by picking up their brothers and sisters. The students have shown strong independence and have been happy to rise to the challenge. We understand that some of the changes have an impact on parents, especially no parents being permitted on-site and we thank you for being flexible and understanding. Thank you for parking in the parent parking areas during drop off and pick up times. I have included the parent access map for your reference, later in the newsletter. School Oval Those of you who walk from the Reserve side of the school may have noticed how wonderful the oval is looking. When I arrived in July 2019 it certainly looked very different! We were able to negotiate with the Department of Education to have additional work done to improve the oval and we are certainly seeing the results. The grass is growing strongly as a result of the improvement to the soil and a variation in the mowing program. It is wonderful to see the results of this oval improvement program. Cont…. Term 2 Planner Now that the majority of students are learning at school, we are preparing the Term 2 planner for distribution during Week 3. We have moved our assemblies to WebEx, which has resulted in assemblies being held later in the day due to the set up time required. Our first class assembly on WebEx will be on Thursday 14 May at 2:00 pm, run by A4. Invitations will be issued to all families in case you would like to join us. We especially encourage anyone learning at home to be part of the assembly. We are also planning a number of fun events for the students, such as a number of dress up days during the term. As forward warning, we will be having a Crazy Sock day on Friday May 15, so you might like to start planning your socks now. No donation is necessary to participate in these dress up days.

Moving forward As WA continues to have more days in a row with no new COVID-19 cases, confidence is beginning to return in the community. Both Premier McGowan and Prime Minister Morrison have warned us that social distancing may need to be in place for some time, so we all need to maintain our vigilance on this. Thank you for your support as we find new ways to run our school and stay connected with our community that keep students, staff and families safe.

P&C NEWS Hello and welcome to Term 2! Well we keep saying it but what surreal times we are in. I can’t help thinking though that this has reinforced by showing what a resilient school community we have. Everyone I have seen or talked to has just been so kind and understanding. If all we can do is be kind to one another while this is going on, well then KPS and our kids are the winners. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all KPS staff to make this unusual situation workable, and our children feel safe. Whilst we cannot know firsthand the work that has gone on behind the scenes, we can only imagine the monumental effort that has been undertaken. This is clear when seeing the happy faces of all students at drop off and pick up. On behalf of our P&C and school community, we thank you all. I hope you have all seen the Connect notice about Uniform Shop and ways to order uniforms at the moment. We are currently in very short supply of some items and have no size 4 jumpers. Please continue to forward your orders and if we cannot fill your order we will communicate directly. Thank you for your understanding. We have decided to keep our Canteen closed for the start of the Term. It is possible that we open, however we have decided it is important to take things slowly and not pressure Volunteers at this uncertain time. Any changes to canteen closure will be communicated through Connect. All other P&C activities are currently on hold. We will have a meeting later this Term in some format and advance notice will be given. Our email contact details for any enquiries you may have about P&C related activities are: [email protected] and [email protected]. Don’t forget to “like” us on Facebook. Free Influenza (flu) vaccine for

Children - 6 months to Year 6

Children aged 6 months to less than 5 years can receive the influenza vaccine for free. WA primary school-aged children can also receive the influenza vaccine for free (pre-primary to year 6). Influenza is a highly contagious disease. Children are at risk of serious health complications if they get influenza.

Influenza, commonly known as flu, is a highly contagious disease caused by the influenza virus. Children are at higher risk of serious complications from influenza. It is strongly recommended that children from six months are immunised against influenza every year.

Why should children get the influenza vaccine? Rates of influenza infection and hospitalisation are highest among children. Children who become infected with influenza can develop serious illnesses, including convulsions (seizures or fits) and diarrhoea. The majority of childhood influenza-related hospitalisations and deaths occur among children without underlying medical conditions.

Where can I get my child get vaccinated? The influenza vaccine is available in metropolitan and country WA from immunisation providers including GPs, community immunisation clinics and Aboriginal Medical Services. Note: Consultation fees may apply.

Contact your GP or immunisation provider or click on these links for more information: Learn more about influenza / Learn more about the influenza vaccine / Protect yourself from viruses.
