Dear Parents

What a happy week we have had … our furry labradoodle friend has brought delight in all spaces. We can’t wait for the name reveal, once the voting is all completed. She has a big job to do as school dog and we know that she has ALL the love and support to do that :)

YEARBOOK 2018Today each family should have received a bright and colourful compilation of the happenings of last year. We hope you enjoy it!

STAFF NEWS Some sudden news is that Ms Nthabiseng Moloi will be leaving us this week. Her primary responsibility was in the Media Centre and the teaching of Zulu. She has been offered a position at a major Post Production company and we wish her well.

KAREN FERRY TO VISIT HATFIELD In the first two weeks of next term, we have a visit from Australian Counsellor and Neuropsychotherapist, Karen Ferry. At the end of this newsletter is a flyer giving details of all the open sessions that we will have. Please have a good look and save the dates now.

PARENT PORTAL

We have had a poor response to our request for parents to log on to the parent portal and update information. I once again urge that you do this and remind you that the onus is on you to keep your details current. One of the reasons for the importance is so that we can contact you or your ‘emergency contact’ in the case of an emergency.

I reiterate the communication from Newsletter #24:

We are pleased to advise you that the school’s software package has a Parent Portal that has now been activated for your use. To be able to access the portal, please use the following link and follow the instructions below:

https://h81.ed-admin.com/hatfieldcs/parentportal.cfm

Please click on the link above and click on “Forgotten Password.” Complete your e-mail address (as given to the school) and type in the test image (CAPTCHA) displayed on the screen in the text in image box provided. An email with login details will be sent to you. When you receive the e-mail, please take note of the user ID given in this mail, as this is your “Parent-ID” which you will require to log onto the Parent Portal. Kindly keep this ID recorded for future logins.

Click on “Reset Password” button in email and type in a password and confirm the password. Confirmation of the “changed” password will be emailed to you.

Using the link above, enter your user ID and new password to log onto the portal.

Once you have logged onto the portal, it is important that all your information (parent and pupil) is always up to date. We therefore request that you click on the tabs available on this portal, update and complete any incorrect/missing information. The responsibility is on you to please keep this updated at all times.

With this portal, you will currently only be able to view your personal information, pupil information, school account and attendance. You can also view your child’s timetable (HS only.) There are many other uses of this portal and we will make these available as we feel equipped and confident to do so.

Every classroom is a kaleidoscope

When students hurt

Dealing with the many emotional needs of students! Childhood fears, stress and anxiety, the academically challenged, multicultural diversities, the loner, the perfectionist, those who crave attention, family dysfunction and more. This topic gives perspective and insight into behaviours that children adopt in order to protect themselves and survive.

Too often life throws curve balls and children are never immune. How does a teacher successfully approach situations of loss? What does a teacher say? Should they say anything? A teacher can assist a child to heal rather than inadvertently add to the pain or frustration a child is experiencing. Teachers can be major players in helping a child move forward after their world is turned upside down.

Families Suffering Loss

How we are affected by loss and grief. The focus will be on loss due to the death of a loved one, but loss is a broad term including separation and divorce, moving homes/schools, the loss of a way of life due to an accident or illness. What are the effects on the brain after loss for adults and children? What are the signs that someone is not coping well? How do we talk to someone after loss? How to help a family, what things hinder the grief process, and how to move forward after loss.

For those that have experienced loss, but also for those who want to support oth-ers.

Staffroom 14:00 – 15:30

The Aging Brain

Medicine and modern technology is finding more and more ways to prolong life, but growing old is maybe not as important as how we age. Neuroscience research suggests that people who experience the least declines in cognition and memory all share certain characteristics. This seminar looks at significant factors that speed up brain aging - factors that are within our control, highlighting that we can actively take charge of our health and perhaps decrease the rate at which our brains age.

For every-one over the age of 26!
